Sprint customers with the recently-released Samsung Galaxy S III are in store for a small, tiny, itty-bitty little OTA update that started rolling out today. The update brings but one thing:

  • Security Updates

Sure, it's not a huge update in terms of usefulness, but it marks one milestone for the GSIII: its first OTA update. Aww, they grow up so fast.

To pull the update manually, head into Menu > Settings > About phone > System updates > Update Android.

I know the untamed voice in the back of someone's mind out there whispered "jellybean". Put that voice to rest as this won't happen until your GSIII dead and buried under that pile of rubber-bands and stereo instructions in your closet.  This is a heavily skinned Samsung phone after all.  If not controlled, this voice will grow louder until the once fresh aroma of your wife's homemade key lime pie forces you to slam your fists on the table and scream obscenities at your ceiling fan.  Sometimes you just have to say, "Its a huge ice cream sandwich and we're all going to have to take a bite."

I actually think Samsung is getting the hint and the updates will not take quite as long.  Probably still 3-4 months after release will our S3 get some Jelly Bean love.  Samsung is finally taking charge of their phones, and telling the carriers what to do because they are the #1 cell phone manufacturer.

Now that the international versions of this phone and the US versions are practically the same software wise, updates should come much faster, if not, root it and move on.

It's not heavily skinned. In fact it's less than the average

I checked on both my S3's and no update is availalbe.  Maybe they are rolling it out in stages.  Also, there is no update Android option.  It's either update firmware, or update Samsung software.  I'm assuming they meant to say update firmware.

Update.  My S3 received the update today and my wife's did also.  It also fixed the Google Wallet issues I was having.
