Earlier today, Google announced a slew of new content for the Play Store, including magazines, TV shows, and the ability to purchase movies. New content is great, but there's a problem: the new Play Store isn't yet available on devices other than the Nexus 7 and I/O Galaxy Nexus (post-Jelly Bean update).

As always, though, those crafty devils over at XDA have yanked the newest version of the Play Store from one of the aforementioned devices and made it available to the world. Simply download and install it like any normal apk to start enjoying all the hyper-fresh content you can eat.

Update: The Play Store now supports setting a favorite sharing method that you can customize to your liking. For example, here I set it to Google+ (by long-pressing):

Download

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing Play Store. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take weeks, download and install it just like any other APK and enjoy the new Play Store experience.

Now that I think about it, with all the new content, the Play Store app could use a facelift

    • cas_e

They should bring it in line with the UI of Chrome/Google Now/the new Google+ app, it would look so nice.

  • Ron Amadeo

What a shame the redesign didn't happen. Matias needs to fix this app.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Doh, spoke to Matias today and forgot to ask him.

    • Chris

Why? They redid the app last year and its fine as is.

  • Loren Cogar

It could still use sorting too.  What a fail.

    Looks good, thanks guys!

Sweet. Installed with no problem. Unfortunately, I probably won't use any of the new content...at least until I get my Nexus 7. I wonder if Google has thought of some sort of monthly subscription service like Netflix. Now, that I could go for!

Out of everything that happened today, I never thought of this. But that is... a FANTASTIC idea. I'd pay for that.

    • cas_e

      That's what I was hoping for - http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/27/3120313/play-store-expansion-for-their-nexus-tablet-today

Am I the only one that noticed the new share menu? It also has a built in Facebook sharing feature.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I just noticed it too - you can set the favorite share to anything you want by long-pressing.

      • http://www.twitter.com/morenicano Morenicano

Yeah at first I thought it was for just Facebook till I realized you can choose what app you use as a favorite. Nice update. Now if only they add a built in bacode scanner and support for gifting....

guys any ideas when google play will be coming to the UK?  been waiting ages!

    • Alan

I guess you mean Play Music as the rest of the Play store is in the UK already?

      • Alex Luckett

That, as well as TV shows and magazines. I've installed the JB market update - can't see any of those yet.

The stock JB rom is AMAZING.

  • Carterst

New version installed on my Galaxy S3 but no changes yet here in the UK. Expected that though to be fair.

  • Dan

who asked if google play was available in the uk omg yes ever since it firrst was released

  • Tim Sheppard

Leonard Krum, if you want Play Music and I guess that's what you mean, use Tunnel Bear on PC to set your proxy to US. Sign into Play Music, you should be fine. Set Tunnel Bear back to UK.
It's a shame Google can't open Play Music in the UK for cloud storage of own music and streaming, I.e. not purchases.

No difference in Canada. When do we get music, movies and mags?

    Other new features:

    - Sort reviews by highest rating rather then just most helpfull and newest. Would be nice if we could sort reviews by most negative as well.
    - +1 icon updated to reflect the new look that came out recently.
    - under the app previews. If the app has a video preview (almost all the top, popluar apps do) the video preview is shown first and is a little larger then before a bit off centered though.

thats about all I can find.
