The Google Maps Android app has been updated to version 6.7, bringing some new important (and useful) features. You probably figured out what they are. Here's the changelog:

What's in this version:

  1. Discover nearby Google Offers in the US
  2. Indoor walking directions (Beta) for Japan and the US
  3. See 360° panoramas inside restaurants and stores

Google Offers has been having difficulty gaining traction in a market dominated by the Groupons and LivingSocials of the world, and Maps integration may be just what it needs to start getting a little respect. You can actually set it up so while you're in the maps app, Offers will let you know if the area you're hovering over contains any... Offers. Nifty.

The app now also features indoor directions and 360 panorama views of business that have opted in, which will certainly increase your efficiency (read: your girlfriend/wife's efficiency) at the mall.

Of course, these features all basically rely on Google having implemented them in your locale, so if you're outside a major city, you're probably out of luck. For now, I can find very few businesses in Los Angeles that have had indoor directions or 360 panorama views enabled.

Head over to the Play Store to download the new version, and check out this Google Mobile blog post for more info.

What's up with the sexist comment? Maybe a guy with an android likes to shop or maybe *gasp* a girl has an android.

Take it easy, it's a joke.

      • jcdyer3

It's an outdated, unprofessional, alienating joke with no humor value whatsover.  You shouldn't have written it for a professional piece, and since you had the poor taste to do so, your editor should have cut it.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

          The joke is editor-approved.

Lighten up, guys. Not everything is meant in a sexist, racial, or otherwise offending way - it's a joke, and guys make jokes like that all the time. Girls make jokes about guys, guys make jokes about girls, it's not sexist, it's part of our lives and of who we are.

          • jcdyer3

I'm not really concerned with how it was meant.  I'm sure the author is a very nice guy. However, geek culture has too much of a for-boys-only image that is alienating and off-putting to too many talented geek women.  The article wouldn't suffer in the slightest without the alleged "joke." The greater problem is not that the joke itself is sexist.  Never mind the "women like to shop" stereotype.  The greater problem is that the joke carries an implicit but powerful assumption that the article was written for men, and that women are just "girlfriends" and "wives" and somehow outside the intended audience of Android Police, and by extension, Android culture.

Also, "lighten up" and "it's just a joke" are never persuasive arguments.  Please bring something better next time.

Somebody's girl wears the pants in the relationship...

Why is this said as if there is a dichotomy between jokes and sexism? It is in precisely through this type of joke that sexism is normalized.

Pretty heteronormative as well. What about a guy who has a boyfriend who likes to shop?

      • OhAaron

< This guy is gay. Him and his boyfriend like to shop.
