Building apps can be a tough task. It can be difficult visualizing how the functionality of an app and its UI work together before you have a working model. Prototyper aims to alleviate some of that stress by letting you build what appears to be a functional app, without that messy business of it having to work.

This contest is now over. Here are our winners, selected at random:
  • MJ
  • Deepu Mukundan

Congratulations, guys - all of you will be contacted for your information in the near future!

Everyone else - keep participating and stay tuned to Android Police so that you don't miss our upcoming giveaway announcements. You can follow AP on Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and RSS.

Prototyper works with a variety of platforms, including arbitrary UIs you build from scratch, so it work great for web development as well. The program includes built-in iOS and now ICS elements, so if you want to adhere to Android's style guide, this program makes it easy to experiment with those looks.

Prototyper has a free version available that you can go download now. However, we also have two Pro licenses (valued at $495 each) for those of you who need some extra power from your simulator. Here are some of the features that are unique to the paid version:

  • Rich interactions: MouseOver, Drag, PageLoad ...
  • Conditional rules.
  • Validations.
  • Forms and Datagrids simulation.
  • Variables.
  • Masters and Templates.
  • HTML and Document generation.

While the basic version will allow you to create something that looks like an app, the pro license will let you build an app mockup that performs very similarly to your final product, instead of just looking like it.

To enter the contest, comment below and tell us how this will help you work. The contest will be close on May 6th, 2012 at 11:59pm. Afterwards, we'll choose two winners at random. Oh, and don't worry if you live in a country that didn't invent deep-fried oreos. This contest is open to international entrants as well.

Thanks, Platinum Apps, for helping to put this together!

  • http://www.MyMoYo.de/ MoYo

I want to start of as a Developer.
Learning by Doing with Prototyper would be great.

  • br_hermon

I'm a freelance graphic designer and developer. It's just me and that's it. Being young and newly married, I have to save (and make) as much money as I can. Winning this would be a huge expense off my back and really allow me to dive even further into app development!

  • http://www.dinana.net Mootaz Dinana

Would allow me to showcase a dynamic prototype of my app-to-be to investors I'm about to meet..

  • GuidZilla

I am constantly coming up with random ideas for apps, app modifications, etc in my head. Having an additional development resource like this could really help analyze those ideas and potentially bring them to fruition. Very cool stuff!

  • http://twitter.com/TerryDMeyer Terry D Meyer

I have ideas for apps to benefit search and rescue teams in the areas of mantracking, resource management and especially, patient care. This could get me over the hump.

    Stay safe out there...

  • Max

How would this help my work?
Well I'd like to win this so I could sell it cheaper to a true programmer that could use it, and with the money got, be able to buy a smartphone and test those apps myself, this Nokia c2-00 I use right now is really outdated. Good luck to every1. Peace. :)

  • Yuku Sugianto

I'm a freelance developer, I can use Prototyper to give to my clients an imagination of how the app will look like in Android. Especially for those iPhone users that insist that only iPhone-style UI works.

This is pure awesomeness for the app developers (i hope i'll be one soon. :D)

  • Chandra

For creating a app, I can convey better to my coworker(designer to developer or vice versa). Never a miscommunication so they say :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Brad-Parler/736682742 Brad Parler

I'm just getting started on my App Empire, right now all I have are sketches on scraps of paper and napkins that soiled with nachos. Well that might be a stretch to be fully honest. But having a Pro license to this software would make the planning and research end of my app development so much of an easier task and I would hope that it would allow me to be a bit more agile in my development processes.

  • black

It help me to creat website in style i want.

  • Brandon Gier

Been looking for a good mock-up generator for android, haven't found any. Had to resort to hand-drawn and the built-in Eclipse generator, would definitely love this to work on executing the UI guidelines I learned in my HCI class.

  • http://twitter.com/Freestyle270 Nathan O’Donoghue

I would use this app to speed up the process of designing the UI and layout of the app. Going from crude hand drawings or really bad MS Paint jobs to a more professional looking mock up will undoubtedly help with making my apps have a level of polish and allow me to test the layouts on a number of screen sizes more efficiently.

  • SChen

This will allow me to easily doing mock-up for

I am a full time mobile app developer for both iOS and Android. I prefer to do as much natively as possible, not only for performance, but just because i despise lazy ports. This would reduce the time and cost of refining the UI of native to reach the guidelines for UI and expectation for UX on both platforms, exposing a greater amount of lower budget projects to quality interfaces.

  • Daniel L

    this would be super!

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

This will help my team, Team Boid (merged with teamROU) create amazing concepts for gorgeous, Holo inspired apps, inspired by Google and the Android design guidelines.

  • FirefighterMatt56

This would be a great time saver. Instead of rearranging the looks in the coding itself, it would allow me to play with the looks without having to code anything and potentially losing a layout that I liked to try something I didn't like. I have a few apps in mind to make. Most of them are on paper and are hard to follow. This would also allow me to make the models so I can get all the layouts down before touching a piece of code.

  • http://twitter.com/burmjohn John

It would help me visualize my concept apps rather then having paper or no mockups at all. Looks neat!

  • http://profiles.google.com/lmennuti Lincoln Mennuti

Going from concept to code has a lot of intermediary steps, not the least of which is layouts and panels and menus. The best idea in the world can get totally overlooked if the interface isn't well thought out and fluid. This tool would greatly help me more easily integrate the interface components to my ideas and concepts, thereby making the process easier.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=708274791 Jordan Blount

Would help me greatly on my journey to be a better developer.

  • qbert1111

I wouldn't use this for myself, I'd give it to a buddy of mine who's a software engineer who just got let go from his job. Then I'd have him make me some sweet home-brew apps for my Galaxy Note.

  • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com/ Cody Toombs

I'd definitely love to get a Pro license. I had to break the bank recently on a new computer for development so I'm trying to save money where I can. I'm working independently and there's at least a couple of projects today and more to come that would greatly benefit from this. As others have mentioned, photoshop is workable but it's definitely not meant for speed or mocking interactions. My primary work has been in web development and now Android development with the possibility of porting over to iOS in the future, so the functionality of this app is matched perfectly to the work I'm doing. When I'm working with clients, this is the kind of thing I would love to use for demonstrations, bringing non-developers a step closer to understanding what a finished version of a product might be like. This would be an excellent tool and a great time-saver.

  • HellG

I'm new to the developing scene of android, I used to code in PHP and C# for school project, as going to IT college next year and starting to learn Java i think that program will be a huge help to me, considering that I'm from Egypt i really can't afford buying it :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/WeiKok Tan Wei Kok

  • AndrewBuell

The new software will making concept designs and presentations of applications easier.
Prototying would go from simple AppInventor mockups and concept art to full fledge wire frames that will show the client some real promise

  • http://twitter.com/dm0n Andy

Seems the perfect shortcut to rip all these ideas out of my brain and share them without having to actually explain every interaction! Next we just need a direct brain wifi transmitter to prototyper creator and I'll be sorted :-)

  • Seth M

I work for a boss that likes seeing all the frilly graphics of sites and the psd comps i make without actually needing any of the functionality until it (sometimes) turns into a real need for the site. Oh and she likes to make tiny adjustments to said frills i put in my comp. Holy crap this would be so useful!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=849869768 Bedhan Ball
