You may remember the recent Facebook update that added two rather controversial app shortcuts on users' devices, with icons that had to be revised because they looked a little too similar to a couple of Android's stock icons.

If you found the added shortcuts to be redundant, confusing, or just plain useless, you're in luck - with the app's latest update, the shortcuts have been totally removed.

It's not exactly clear why Facebook so quickly yanked the shortcuts from the app, but rumblings from the user community about the – in many cases – unwanted installation of extra apps may have something to do with the decision.

If you haven't already, just click through the widget below and grab the update.

Its kinda retarded they had the messaging shortcut because they also have the facebook messenger app also... which is seperate. they should just combine those two into one installation

I don't think they should be integrated because it gives me the option not to install it, as I don't want it. Keep em separate!

Another example is Lattitude. I have no intentions or desire to EVER use it, but because it's integrated into Maps, I'm stuck with it. Choices are a good thing ;-)

My GS2 updated to ICS and now Facebook ap is a resource hog, killing batteries three times quicker then it used too. I hoped this update would fix that, but nope. Sticking to the inferior Friendcaster for now, but I'm glad its there.

  • vyomashar

Lol why did they add it in the first place

    Good riddance to useless crap!

well, loving the "due to customer feedback" line, at least they've started listening... I still want to choose which album to upload photos to though.
On a side note, i'm liking tge new disqus ui, not compatible with swype though =( pain

      Read: tons of 1-star reviews.

I reverted back to an older version when I noticed those extra icons, don't need useless crap cluttering my app drawer. Suppose I'll update now.

I found this story on Google+. Screw Facebook.

  • vignesh

Thank god. But still the friend casteris better.

Thank god they listened to mine and several others' complaints. Those extra icons sucked and didn't increase the functionality at all. I still want their main app design to be more streamlined. They still use the old loading icon.

  • msjohnson

removed it B/C the extra apps and using browser now. Gnex has never run better or longer on battery. thanks FB, won't ever be reinstalling regardless of updates!

why did everyone get mad when facebook did this? Google Maps, Friendcaster, and T-Mobile does this also and i haven't heard people complain about it.

FriendCaster has a camera shortcut too and no one complained about that.

I liked the Messenger icon. The camera one did have to go though.

  • J0em3nard

Just make them separate apps, problem solved.

  • Kisuke89

People got mad because any pic that you snapped with it's camera app was auto uploaded to facebook. That cool shot of your car, the snap of crazy aunt linda doing a hand-stand . . . that not so kosher shot you took for your BF/GF's eyes only. Yeah that got posted too.
