Back in late March, Sony announced that it would indeed be bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the Tablet S and the funky little Tablet P. True to its word, the rollout has already begun for the former.

The update brings several new features to the 9.4-inch slate:

  • Enhanced lock screen
    • Direct access to Notifications
    • Unlock direct to camera
  • New panoramic camera mode
  • Enhanced Gallery media viewer
    • Direct SD card access + photo editing tools
  • Exclusive “Small Apps’ for multi-tasking
    • Calculator, Browser, Remote Control
    • Move to screen edge for reduced clutter
  • New Home Screen actions
    • Drag icons together to create folders
    • Add names to folders
  • Enhanced web browser
    • Switch from mobile to desktop web sites
    • Save pages for offline viewing
  • Access files directly from SD card
  • Native screenshot capture
    • Press “power” and “Volume –“

With the release of ICS, Sony is also offering a $50 discount and a free desktop cradle to anyone who picks up a Tablet S between now and May 12. This brings the total price down to $350 for the 16GB version of the S, and $450 for the 32GB.

If you already own a Tablet S, however, you should be prompted to install the update as soon as you connect to Wi-Fi.

Same here, I suppose it will take some time to get available internatioally!

Small apps is more promising. I like the implementation better than Samsung's version, but obviously smaller number of apps that can do this. Also, what's with the browser being a small app? This sounds interesting...

does this include the 3g model?

Just one thing, can anybody let me know if Sony's changed the app drawer in ICS to the stock ICS one, because despite being more attracting, the current app drawer now looks quite sick...

    • Joachim365

It resembles stock ICS, but with a white background.

The picture becomes garbled after a few seconds of clear play.

I am having this same problem.

    • Seventeensix

Yeah having the same issue. Have you fixed it?

Just checked for update again a few minutes ago and it was available. The popup browser works extremely well, even better then the browser did for me on honeycomb and may even get me using this thing way more than just for apps.

The camera panorama update i don't care for since the camera on this tablet is complete trash anyway and nothing short of sony recalling all devices and adding a higher quality camera will fix it. (dark and super grainy)

I only have 1 problem so far and sadly it is a pretty big one. Whenever i open the app store it immediately crashes. Once i figure out how to fix this i will be very satisfied with the update.

    • TimHardin

My App Store is also crashing, after the update. Is there a fix???

  • Milesscovern

About to install the update :)

  • Zandm7

ICS on my Sony Tab, ftw!

"we don’t yet have an announcement regarding when such an update for this product will be available in this region."

  • http://twitter.com/rosschach Ross

    From Sony Twitter:

The Android 4.0 update for‪#SonyTablet‬ S will be released for all regions by end of May. Thanks for your patience!"

  • Hine

As soon as I installed the update, all my apps started crashing.
