The mythical unicorn Google Drive is so close, we can practically taste it. Earlier today, Reuters broke the news of a possible Tuesday launch (that would be today), confirming earlier rumors of an initial free 5GB quota and throwing a new number, 100GB of upgradeable storage, into the mix.

It's quite possible that Reuters' sources were on the money this time, as around the same time, Google started bumping the usual free 1GB Docs storage limit all the way up to... you guessed it - 5GB. Check it out:

Additional pricing still remains at $0.25/GB, but this could change with the official announcement. Google Drive is expected to launch with desktop and Android sync clients and enhance the Google Docs experience, giving the likes of Dropbox, Box, and other cloud syncing services a run for their money.

I have a really good feeling about this - anyone taking bets on the official launch later on today? How about U.S.-only vs worldwide?

Thanks, Abhisshek!

Why would they create an alternative pricing? I think it'll just be part of Google Storage, with the additional free 4GB in G docs I've gone from just over 50% of my 200GB extra to just under 50% thanks Google!

Not saying they will, but they could, we don't know yet. They might make it cheaper to lure more people to upgrade. They might make it cheaper in the beginning for a limited time, similar to what Amazon did back in the day with the Cloud Player launch. But I bet we'll know within 24 hours.

Data like images and text can be highly compressed, and fill a lot less than it appears to be, it may be that they will have a different pricing structure if they're going to specifically target a general purpose storage audience.

I don't understand all the rumors about the "up to 100GB"... currently Docs allows you to upload anything you want, with a limit of 10GB per file.  You can buy up to 16TB.  It would be extremely lame (and piss alot of current customers off) if they came out with "Google Drive" and decreased the limits or increased the cost.  As far as I'm concerned this is a non-event.  It's just renaming of an existing service and giving another method of uploading the files.

        • Hugo

That is exactly what I'm thinking Mike, my Google Docs are full of "non docs" files, all I'm hoping for is a better (cheaper!) way to sync a folder on my PC's and/or android devices. I'm currently using Syncdocs but files sometimes end up in the trash when I just want to move them to another "collection" and it is overly complicated.

if it's not world wide i will be tempted to ragequit google. shortly before hacking my way round it.

Maybe what you should do, is be a real patriot and be American. You could come across the ocean in a boat to get at the American Dream (Google integrated cloud storage) and then we will be all like "No more foreigners, Amurica!"

its easy, just change your time zone to US time zone.

For me, I changed from +8 to -8, and I got it instantly...

    • Thomas

I simply uploaded a few files and it changed, at first it only showed the new size in the upload manager, but after a force refresh (ctrl+F5) it also showed the 5GB in the menu :)

It will be more interesting to know what are the other services that will make use of Google Drive :) eg. backup of games/app data to it :D

I want google music (UK), happy with the free dropbox account at the moment. Google Drive isn't going to give me something I haven't got already, unless I am missing something.

    • Abhisshek Das

find  some one you know in America ask them to open an a/c for  Google Music . after sign up Google does not check are you from US or not. then you can get it any where  in the world , or would use US centric Proxies too .

I can confirm that my non-Google Apps account received a bump up of an additional 5GBs. I already purchase 80GBs of storage at a very reasonable rate. #GoogleDrive is coming. :)
