Facebook for Android has been updated to version 1.9, bringing performance improvements (read: faster feed scrolling), a some new picture sharing and messaging features. You may not be able to get it quite yet on the device Play Store, but forcing the download from the web Play Store should do the trick, as usual. Here's the changelog:

-Improved performance and various bug fixes

-More messaging features like creating group messages and adding friends to existing group conversations

-Shortcuts to share photos and messages right from your home screen

I've already noticed smoother operation in the main feed when scrolling, and the new photo share button on the main feed page is pretty handy, too. Going into messaging will now show a new option to start a group message, bringing more of Facebook's web UI features to mobile.

No thanks. I do not need an app on my phone reminding me of how few people like me.

    • Harjit Sahota

hehe sry bro, but i laught at your comment :))))

  • BlackGod

Smoother scrolling, no doubt, but the News Feed still takes time to load..at least there are improvements.

I will install it the day it stops opening by itself U_U

    • ga_st

still using 1.6.4,which doesn't have the service in background..it still does all the basic stuff and drains less battery than friendcaster.

  • Eduardo Diaz

    Nothing like the new friendcaster

  • Whargharbl

I opened it and the News Feed greeted me with a never ending Loading screen. Great improvement.

Are you sure your just not on Sprint's network?

  • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

Way more important than anything they put in the changelog, you can now actually set up your notifications!

I'm really confused about the added shortcut for Messenger though...does facebook want us using this, or the dedicated messenger app they also have?...

Also, when are they going to do a damn tablet layout?!

    • http://www.facebook.com/bradart.ink Brad Ganley

I'm quite confused about that too. Does the app not suck horribly at handling messenger anymore?

  • Clint Williams

and the tablet UI is coming when?

    • http://photo.katzmatt.com Matt Katzenberger

2.0 hopefully...seeing as this is 1.9 that shouldn't be too far off.
I'm really hoping soon though. As much as Friendcaster is a great workaround it still just feels like a workaround.

      • skeeterfood

Facebook should have bought the company behind Friendcaster instead of instagram.

  • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

Woah...more importantly, that looks like it's set up for ICS!

    • http://twitter.com/redbullcat Phil Oakley

      Maybe not :/

  • Martin

One major issue.... how do you check in now? Can't do it from the main screen....oh yeah have to go to "Nearby" to check in.... so not intuitive - FAIL!!!

    • Martin

hmmm seema after a message telling me the app might need the phone restarted I restarted my phone and now the Facebook app looks like the old version and not the one in the phones on this thread....

App says it's version 1.9... now has a few tweaks like being able to comment on a photo without opening the full version of the photo and also being able to like comments on photos...as it used to do before the previous update...

Time will tell if this app is smoother as I am not seeing that on my Leedroid tweaked HTC One X!!

      • Adamheddle

I had this happen as well. Got an error that made me force close the app. Opened it back up and it reverted to the old look. Fail!

      • Nicolas

yep, same thing on my nexus s, it reverted to its old self, but I do have the cam app.

      • Anya Floris

Mine reverted to the previous look after the first exit as well.. I'm on a droid razr maxx. If anyone figures it out, please post - the new one was much faster to load on my phone!

  • Andreas Trygg

    Fb cam? Seriously?

  • Jerry Lange

    Wow this update sucks!

  • heyheythere

Wait I updated but my app still looks exactly the same as it used to. It looked like the screenshots at first but now it looks exactly the same as before the update. I got the pointless icons to camera and messenger, though! Verizon Galaxy Nexus. What gives?

    • Martyjc92

Same thing here, had the new version, then it started going back and forth, now it looks like an old version again. Motorola ATRIX 1

  • HubbaBubba

Theres a new 'code generator' function in the side menu too. Kinda like Google Authenticator. You might need two-step authentication turned on though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/reesilva Renato Biancalana da Silva

While it doesn't have sync contact and push notification I'll use the Friendcaster

  • Chris Banks

So do we not need to use the stand alone facebook messenger app now?
The new new short cut loads something very similar..

Also I have also noticed that it changes to look like on of the old versions, then after the pop up of the new camera and messenger icon, it changes back to what it recently looks like.

Also, WHY HAVE A SPLASH SCREEN. This isn't an iPhone app. It's a waste of time if you ask me. I don;t like the way it forgets everything if you use back button, rather than home button to close it.

    • Nicolas

the "old" mesenger app only does messages. the new shortcut opens facebook in the messages tab instead of the newsfeed or whatever else you were on last. I really don't see the point of it...

      • Chris Banks

It looks like they have incorporated the standalone app into the facebook app, as it looks the same to me.

Will have to check now to see if it has the same notification functionality. Will be un-installing the standalone one if it is the same.

        • Goldenpins

I thought so to.. but noticed its like the FB app that uses intervals of time.. the official message app was instant notification. I liked that better for messages. The new added on message app from the FB upgrade isnt instant.

          • Chris Banks

Yea, I've noticed. How annoying. Now I have two apps, that are basically identical but one doesn't notify instantly.

One of the biggest companies in the world and can't even sort out a decent app.

      • Goldenpins

Not really.. im using both.. and there the same. Both go to messages. Except the FB added messenger uses time intervals for delivery. Check your settings once your inside.

  • Dave BG

    I hate facebook.

  • http://pctonic.net/ Ashutosh Mishra

Does it use less memory than before? I have a Nexus S, and I simply can't have an app that keeps running all the time while using ~50 MB memory. Facebook webapp all the way.

  • Mikey_H

i stopped using the FB app a long time ago, nothing ever worked properly. The best bit was the force closing, every time you went to post a message (this continued to happen over x4 updates)  I now have a bookmark to take me to the mobile site, which does everything. Easy.

BTW, has anyone had the ICS update from T-Mobile in the UK?

  • sQueezedhe

    Doesn't post properly I've found.

  • Briancricketrakita

Odd that Android FB still doesn't have a button 'share' button for photos and articles that other folks post, seeing as how this is one of the most popular uses these days.

  • http://www.facebook.com/roikatz Roi Katz

    Still, the slowest app ever...

  • Goldenpins

doesn't make any sense.. if you have the official FB app and messenger from them. Messenger does the same and warns you with a pop up and ringtone instantly. I can see the picture share feature as a plus, but messenger is the same. There both official. The messenger that comes with FB has 30+ minute intervals like the app, while the official messenger is instant like using push notification. All i do is disable notification from FB and let gmail uses push notification warn me of a post. The other official FB app does the same "Instant".

  • cile1977

    It really seems faster. Unbelievable!

  • thegroovebrothers

I hardly ever check Facebook on mobile so just uninstalled the application.

  • Picaim Inc.

NEW SOCIAL NETWORK FOR ANDROID - Picaim

Picaim is a project that aims to become a social network to see and share things that are happening in your city and in the world.
The service is based on sharing geo-located photos of things that are happening in your city.

The great idea is that photos can not be sent by the computer, just for mobile devices, and only at the moment they were captured. This measure helps prevent false information inserted in the social network.

This means, you see what is happening, what the person who took the photo has to say, and where that is happening at the moment what is happening.
You can see content classified by what is happening in your city.

Also you can post anonymously, if you wish to protect their identity to share with the world.

Anyone can see what is happening in your city on our web site, without registration or application for mobile.

The project was launched this week, still has very few users, and we are asking for help to all who possess an android phone, just download the application, test and share with friends in your city.

To check out the project, visit:

OBS.: If you can not take the picture because of the gps location, try again in an open environment.

Thank you Facebook for the new notifications settings. I can choose what I wanted to be notified on.
That would be wonderful and all if you actually pushed notifications, like your previous versions did. P.o.s update.

  • ShellBellsrq

I just changed phones cause mine got damaged. The damaged one had the camera. On the new one, I updated but do not see these two applications on my droid thunderbolt. I restarted and liked the camera. How do I get it on the app screen?

  • Vijju Manish04

I have installed this app in my phone but its not an good app.
how can I install the older version of facebook?
Iam searching it in the PLAY STORE but its showing the new version.
can any one please tell me how can I upload the facebook version to older one?

  • disgusted user

New update is horrible. It is not showing the news feed correct. Scrolling also turns the app black in the news feed.

  • This is Nascar

How does one perform a search for something/someone on the FB app for Android? I've yet to find a way to so this.
