Last night, Verizon updated their Droid 2 support page to announce a new update (v4.5.621) is coming soon rolling out now. While it doesn't bring anything major (*cough* Android updates *cough*), it does bring a few significant bug fixes and improvements:

Or, in non-image form:

Device Features
+ Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
+ A Google Security Patch has been added to improve security level.
+ Fixed issue where the device may power ON without user interaction.
+ Adjusted camera settings will be saved, even after the device is powered down.
+ Resolved possible device resets while playing music.
+ Reduced Out of Memory errors.

Email, Messaging & Data
+  Improved ability to access and receive Gmail messages when the
    Mobile Hotspot is turned on.
+ Addressed error that replicated thumbnails in message threads.

Applications & Widgets
+ WAV files can be played from Visual Voice Mail.
+ Purchased ringtones are now able to be downloaded, saved and used
where appropriate.

The update process is the same as always - head to Settings -> About Phone -> System Updates to check for it manually, or you can just wait for it the notification to hit your phone. From there, the 14MB update will download and install, rebooting your phone in the process.

"Coming Soon" was last night for me. It rolled in as an Over the Air update around 10 PM Eastern.

      Thanks for the confirmation.

Anyone know if this update breaks root, and if so, is root recoverable?

  • Silver Fang

The update downloaded but wouldn't install for me, even with bloatware defrosted.

Just in time... I replaced my D2 on Wednesday.

Whatever, I would never take this update anyway, since the updates to the D2G and DX broke root AND sbf.

yeah i'd recommend people sit and wait on this one.. i'm closely watching the D2G situation since my wife has one.

I just got my update this morning. Ironically, I just had Verizon send me a replacement D2 because my previous D2 kept rebooting (Based on their description of the update, it was probably because I played music a lot). Now I have a new phone, AND the latest bugfix release. Nice!

"Fixed issue where the device may power ON without user interaction."
Did people actually see this? The phone just randomly turned itself on?

Yes.  During hunting season in a remote location without digital service I decided to leave it in the truck turned off to conserve battery.  When I got back to the truck a few hours later it was on and the battery nearly spent.

I finally got the update this morning at 2am (4/18).  It fixed the destroyed cut/copy and paste that the previous update had wiped out. So I think I'll keep it a while longer and save some money (Today I could upgrade it).
