While owning an actual supercar can prove to be outrageously expensive, with $0.99 and your Android phone, you can get the next best thing.

XLR8 1 XLR8 2

Indeed, 2XL Games has just released what might be termed the most ingenious gimmick ever: XLR8 (pronounced “accelerate”), an app that makes smooth, supercar-esque engine noises that cover up the dusty old cough of your own machine’s engine.

Assuming your Android device has GPS (most do nowadays), you can simply plug it into your car’s stereo, just as you would if your intention were to listen to some music. XLR8 then senses the direction in which your car is moving via the phone’s accelerometer and uses this information to make engine noises that correspond to your turns, accelerations, stops, etc.

You can make the engine noises sound like:

  • A classic V8 muscle car
  • A NASCAR engine
  • A Ford GT40
  • A Ferrari sports car
  • A Lamborghini Supercar

It should work on most any Android gadget, though it’s said to work best on devices with GPS capabilities. Thus, there seems to be no reason not to try it out; you know what to do with the info below.

This is neat and all, but if you want to have a growly engine, seriously just throw a high-flow intake on. That will *actually* make your car sound meaner.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

      Hence the "gimmick" :)

    • Marc

Where can a mechanically challenged hipster find a high-flow intake for a Prius?

      • Matt

^ lol. Or just cut the muffler off your car. You may get a ticket (or three) but, hey, you saved $0.99.

  • dBo

Sweet! I'm loving the Lamborghini engine. Sounds bitchin!

    • Nexuz-Uno

Did you buy the sound in app? For me it looks like to get the other four cars it will cost $5 more!

  • Parker

Is it just me or is that an iPhone in the video?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It's an iPhone - it's common to have promotional videos done for one OS and re-used for others. The app is there, I assure you (click the widget).

didn't us government require all hybrids or electric vehicles to have audible engine sounds (stupidly). Couldn't someone hack the car system to tweak this app and run through the exterior?

Just imagine your nissan leaf with a lambo engine.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I'd like to see that mod.

      • Freak4Dell

Would be pretty easy...just wire in a couple extra speakers and put them behind your grill.

  • Chris

Tried it out, doesn't work that great at all. The app wasn't very accurate in regards to the GPS. Plus they want an extra $5 just for the 4 extra cars, no thanks. Also, I could only use it on my tablet, apparently one of the most popular Android devices in history (EVO 4G) isn't supported. I'll keep my $1.

  • Nexuz-Uno

Can anyone else confirm that the app only comes with one engine sound?

  • Zadias

Sucks that it only comes with the single engine. 1.99 each for the remaining 4, 4.99 extra for combo. Otherwise, its awesome as I have a 400watt amp+sub behind my seat.

    • Nexuz-Uno

I'm mad at the company. I feel deceived.

  • GraveUypo

lol i thought of this some other day. i'm so gonna try it, i hate the sound of my engine.

    • GraveUypo

it won't fool anyone (it's a bit laggy and it sounds like a "bad" video game - worse than forza 4 for instance) but it's still a pretty cool gimmick. i think it's worth the buy (not sure for all cars, but the one that comes is worth it)

      • Marc

Almost everything sounds worse than Forza 4. Forza 4 has very accurate sounds for the engine. Both of my cars are in Forza 4 and they sound almost exactly the same as IRL.

        • GraveUypo

well, yeah. the reason i'm complaining is because the app clearly sounds worse than forza 4 does. if it sounded like forza it'd be awesome enough already.

  • Freak4Dell

They've had this type of thing as a standalone device for a while now. It was only a matter of time before somebody made an app for it.

  • montgoss

I think this would be hilarious to use in my Chevy Volt. :-)

looks like several popular Android devices are not supported. L A M E.

my Galaxy S2 (Epic touch) is a no go.

  • seriosbrad

It works pretty good if you accelerate and brake slowly so that the app can adjust in sync with the gps and tune the settings. Out of the box it doesn't work so great. Also my car is a manual so it sounds a bit weird when I shift, and then randomly the app will shift lol.

    • jay

Maybe they could integrate obd with this and the timings would be 1:1.

There's that torque app that works well with obd.. the two should shack up and c-section a new super awesome engine app!

I'll purchase it cos for novelty alone it looks fun... $5 aint nothing bitches why cry.. drink juice that day and not coffee.

      • http://www.baronsofbullshit.com/ seriosbrad

        That's a neat idea.  My cars don't have ODB though.  1988 and 1984 ^_^

  • Sootie

The new m5 BMW actually does this as standard, it has a microphone somewhere in the exhaust and when its in M mode it plays it through the car stereo so it sounds louder

  • Sootie

Also didnt get it cause my skyline is bloody loud as it is. Cool idea though

  • flamecutter

actually I think it sounds great and am having a blast with it. For 99c I got a muscle car engine novelty app that's a lot of fun. Not sure what some folks are whining about. No requirement to buy other engines. for a buck it's a cheap no brainer.....

  • flamecutter

I just noticed it's on Freeappaday now so you can get the app with muscle car for free atm......

definitely worth downloading guys, don't pay attention to the whiners...

    • Freak4Dell

      Isn't that only for iOS?

And man, that site is ugly.

  • David

Thank you 2XL Games for releasing an app that can be enjoyed by everyone.

  • Snow

     This app is excellent!

  • Jesse-deslauriers

I brought my nephew to this 4D ride the other day where we were seated in a small room with a big screen in front of us. I really didn't know what to expect so when the show/ride started, I was amused that our seats started to make movements along with what was shown on the screen. The theme was like an outer space war where we had to ride a battle ship. It was really awesome, felt like I was really battling with other space ships for a few minutes that I was in the ride. When we got out, I wanted more of it! Well, I can't afford a 4D ride for my own house though. Then I learned about this new app that kind of does the same thing as that 4D ride, only you're really driving your real car to sounds of authentic racing cars! It's an app by 2XL Games, the same company that brought driving enthusiasts games like 2XL ATV Offroad 2009 and 2XL TROPHYLITE Rally. They call it XLR8, pronounced accelerate, and it uses the accelerometers and GPS of your Android device to create realistic engine sounds that match every move your car makes. For only $0.99, this new app gives me that 4D ride experience that I love!

      Mkay... cheer lead much?
