If you're into microblogging, quick posts, and tossing some images on the web double-fast, then you could use Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. If, however, you like to do all those things in once place and prefer a sort-of niche community in which to do it, then you should probably use Tumblr.

For the uninformed, Tumblr is basically a supercharged microblog that makes it really quick and easy to share content of all types, including quotes, images, links, audio, video, and simple text. Its simplistic layout makes it easy to use and share content, and its users makes it unique in the social networking world.

If, however, you're already familiar with Tumblr, then you'll be glad to know that the Android app received a pretty massive update that adds some functionality, as well as makes the app prettier.

  • Totally new, beautiful interface
  • More responsive, faster-loading dashboard and blogs
  • Better photo browsing
  • Notifications for multiple blogs live in one place
  • Tumblr Radar!

The update is live in the Play Store, so hit the widget and grab it.

If you'd like to follow me on Tumblr, you can do that here. I promise I'll start using it more.

I want to say "AWESOME!" but from the screenshots it doesn't look like they've put back in audio uploads from the app, so... yay. Gonna get it anyway

really dig the new UI.. works better on CM9 for the E4GT. my only issue is the load times. i noticed this is a "feature" of the new app.. yet im experiencing very long load times(even over wifi).

i welcome the new improvements... almost forgot about tumblr after Instagram was released last week.

    • Dan

slightly off topic...but how stable in your opinion is CM9 for the E4GT?

      • http://derp.org autoprime

very stable. should be daily driver for most.

usb mass storage is still an issue. there is also the issue of ICS kernels causing bricks during partition wipes using the recovery... so no recovery is packed with the kernel at the moment. so if you can do without usb storage and nandroids.. you have a winner.

So... still no tablet UI, and huh?

  • http://truefreethinkers.org Jonathan

How well does this work for tablets? Usually an app won't say whether or not it's tablet compatible, even when it is. (Angry Birds, Currents, Stumbleupon) Hopefully in future aticles it'll have a quick note saying:

    * Beautiful phone UI
    * (Doesn't) Works Great with Tablets

    YESS! I love tumblr! :)

Is anyone else having trouble adding new blogs to follow with this? I tapped the "+" button but nothing happens...

I don't like it. I like the old one better.

"This item cannot be installed in your country". Boo!

    • Umberto

Yeah me too! I guess it's not working outside the US?
      Anyone can post the apk?

  • BK Phil

Uninstalled the previous version a few days ago because it did almost nothing itself and mostly just launched browsers to do stuff.

Happened to reinstall yesterday, and was greeted by this new version, which AWESOME!

OK, maybe it's not the holy grail, and I'm sure I'll have a gripe or two, but it has FAR more functionality than the old version, and will stay installed.

  • Ian S.

To be honest, its visually pleasing but as far as functionality goes this new version is garbage.

In the old app when you submitted a post, it would show a spinning circle which would go away once your image was uploaded. If it couldn't upload for some reason, it'd kick you back and say "Error uploading post"

But this new version, as soon as you hit "Post" the screen closes and you get a little toast notification that says "Posting". It will not tell you wether or not the post fails. I've tried uploading 4 pictures this morning and none of them posted. Guess its back to the mobile site for me until this issue gets fixed

Can anyone provide me with the apk? I seems it is not available outside US...

I'm slightly (highly) annoyed that you can't leave a reply on people's posts anymore, or read the replies that others leave.

The new update sucks - and here's the why: I used the previous version on my acer tablet, and it worked great (or as great is gonna get at this point), but now the new one doesn't work at all.

The response from tumblr support confirmed this - and so far, all the other tumblr apps aren't that great either...I thought I would stick it out using the "approved app", but now I'm stuck with NO tumblr app.
