pantechburst
Last Updated: June 5th, 2012

At CES this year, Pantech announced the Burst, its first smartphone to run on AT&T's LTE network. At a measly fifty bones with a two-year contract, its 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage give this little device quite a bang for the buck.

As such, quite a few people may be temped to scoop this little guy up, but there's one major drawback for many users: lack of developer support. It's no secret that some Android devices are much more supported than others by the development community, and a not-yet-rooted Android device is very unappealing to many people.

Fortunately, our boy jcase, along with developers Attn1 and IOMonster, found a pretty simple method for rooting this top-of-the-budget-pyramid device after several days of working on it. Ready? Let's get started.

What You'll Need:

That's it. With your phone plugged into your computer, navigate to the folder where you downloaded prestoroot.img and launch a command prompt (shift+ right click > open command window here; Note: this doesn't work in Windows 7's libraries - you must be in the actual folder). Once you've done that, execute the following commands:

  • adb reboot bootloader

Allow the phone to boot into the bootloader before continuing.

  • fastboot boot prestoroot.img

At this point, just wait for the phone to do its thing and reboot. Once it's fully booted, reboot it once more. After it's ready to go again, install SuperUser from the Play Store, and you're done.

See? Stupid-easy. If you happen to hit any snags, however, head over to this thread on Rootzwiki for support.

Enjoy!

i really dont think this is stupid easy. i dont know how to use the adb thing. if it was stupid easy then it would be as easy as just installing an app. but i did root my gs2 with odin. go figure

    • http://PocketESN.com Justin Case

It's two commands, if that isn't easy I don't know what is

If an app can gain root, then you have a big security/safety problem with the phone.

      • jeff donuts

im pretty sure i can learn but im too lazy. my phone is fine im aware of malware crap

      • Ryan B

Two commands isn't as easy as a one-touch app, like the kind that was around for rooting the OG Droid back when it ran FroYo

        • http://PocketESN.com Justin Case

That was done via a vulnerability in android itself, such ways of rooting are not preferred, and are a big problem when they show up.

To the best of my knowledge, no such exploits are publically available for this firmware.

its been a little bit of a struggle but these guys... really know what they are doing...he even went in on my phone as i was letting him test on it using my laptop remotely. its just amazing the things these guys do :D

    • _KHAOS_

so thank you for all of your hard work guys :)

  • skinien

What's up with people complaining about how easy this method is? It took me about an hour to root my Thunderbolt when it first came out.

I find it insulting to my pride as an Android owner to see a ad for the Nokia Lumia 900 on here. Prepare to feel a onslaught of hate mail from me expressing my anger!

Nah. I kid. I'm sure you didn't choose to have that ad here. Or did you?

  • AC

This is only stupid-easy if you at least know what adb... AP, you probably need to post or link to a little more details for all the beginners out in there.

Any chance this would work on the Pantech Element as well??

       What im i doing wrong?????

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZZQNSVURMR4MZ74ZV37ERZVJ6M Ken

Sorry, but this isn't working at all. I've got adb and fastboot ready to go, but I get the ole
    * daemon started successfully
    error: device not found

tried getting the driver package from the Android SDK but that didn't do anything.

"adb devices" doesn't list anything either, despite my phone definitely being connected. I would greatly appreciate some more detailed instructions and troubleshooting.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZZQNSVURMR4MZ74ZV37ERZVJ6M Ken

ok I sorted it out, somewhat. I had never installed Pantech's PC Suite, which installs the drivers and junk. You might want to mention at the beginning of this article that you HAVE to have installed the PC suite and connected your phone to your computer with it prior to doing any of this

      http://www.pantechusa.com/support/burst

However, after running the "adb reboot bootloader" command (which worked and put me in fast boot mode), the "fastboot boot prestoroot.img" command got stuck waiting for device. This may be my fastboot, but I don't think so. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Anon

Worked perfectly first time. Phone wouldnt even connect to the pantech pc suite, but it was connected perfectly fine via usb, could navigate the two sd card folders in my root directory, decided to wing it and give rooting a shot even though I read that it had to be connected in the pc suite, needless to say, all went well and am currently rooted.

  • ABDEL

ITS STAYS IN WAITING OR DEVICE.

  • R4dpere

also getting stuck after fastboot boot prestoroot.img it says waiting for the device... not sure what is happening.... anyone got this one figure out?

  • Jankytdg22

Stuck at waiting for device >_>

  • Adam C Bourne20

After I load the boot loader I get the white screen on my phone that says fastboot. Then the device is disconnected from the computer. When I enter fastboot boot prestoroot.img it says directory invalid :( wth? Any help?

  • senor_mario

Here's how I got around the "waiting for device " crap:
FIRST download the Pantech PC suite here: http://www.pantechusa.com/support/download/GSHtFC3uh4hYdhdV0SMP4BBb171RP9m6
    then:
    1. Open control panel
    2.Open device manager
    3. Look for "Android Device" or something similar to that. Click the arrow and you will se the same "Android Device" with the little yellow triangle warning you of driver trouble.
4.Right click and choose "Update driver software..."
    5. Choose "browse my computer for driver software"
    6. Choose "let me pick from a list of device drivers"
    7. Check "show compatible hardware" and then choose from the list "Pantech Android ADB Interface Ver1"
    8. IF your driver isn't listed already, start over and on step 6 choose "search for driver software in this location" and check "include subfolders" then  Browse to your "C: hard disk", then to your "program files", then to the "pantech" folder, then click "Android USB drivers" and click okay. Then click "Next" and windows will do its little magic.
Now go back to do the root process again from the folder where ADB, Fastboot and prestoroot.img are located. All three need to be in the SAME folder. Right click the folder while holding the shift key. Chose "open command window here" and do all the commands in the same command window. Then SUCCESS!!!!!!!!!!!

If it doesn't work, DO IT AGAIN. It took me about 3 tries to get it to work. Don't know why, maybe I'm a little stupid.
Thanks to JCase and attn1 and IOmonster.

  • metal_gunjee

Figured out the problem with "waiting for device." You have to install seperate drivers for this. Go to device manager while the phone is still on the white fast boot screen, you'll see Android with the yellow mark indicating there's no driver installed, install the driver by letting windows search the folder where you have fastboot and adb folders placed. Mine worked instantly after doing this!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZZQNSVURMR4MZ74ZV37ERZVJ6M Ken

ok I finally got it to work by adding the drivers like below while in fastboot mode. The fastboot appears to complete succesfully, but upon running Root Checker, I get told it's not rooted. Not sure what I could have done wrong.

Anyone else stuck at the Pantech screen after running the "fastboot boot prestoroot.img" command? I left it for over 30 mins and nothing changed. Only thing I can do is pull out the battery, and try again...same results over and over.

  • rogerpjr

Being that MOST of us HATE ( well, dislike is more politically correct, isn't it? ) MS on our computers/Laptops, I use PC-BSD on one and Linux on the other... Any love for these two, other than running Wine?

  • kyle

I followed this correctly but at the end it says one of the drivers didn't install correctly. What do I do now?
