A new Google Play Store v3.5.16 started rolling out to some Android users in the last 24 hours. This version replaces 3.5.15, which brought a whole host of new features last time around, and reportedly brings fixes to those having trouble seeing purchased apps or experiencing force closes.

Additionally, improvements in snappiness were reported, but it could just end up being the placebo effect. I haven't found any other obvious changes thus far. Still, if you haven't received the update yet, there's no reason to delay it whatsoever - you'll find our download mirrors below.

Download

Download (change the extension to .apk if your browser downloads it as something else for some reason, like a .zip or .bin) and install as you would do it with any other apk - it will replace the existing Market or Play Store with the latest version 3.5.16.

Thanks, Rik!

God, i wonder if they'll ever fix the bug with apps bought from other places tied to Google Play, it's been months already and quite a few updates, but bug is still there.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I don't have this issue, but if anyone does, see if this release fixes it and report back please.

      • marius

Already been on v. 3.5.16 since yesterday, got like 6 apps from Amazon tied to Google Play, prompting for updates. Of course i can't update them, since they were bought from Amazon. I'm getting tired of this.

        • MarkG

What is this? idiot Thursday or something?

Why is it Google's problem you decided to shop at Amazon?

If I buy goods from another store, I don't expect support from elsewhere.

This is EXACTLY why people shouldn't buy the Kindle Fire (or install the Amazon app store), and wait for the proper Google entry level 7in tablets, as they have the full Google experience.

        • sriracha

Mark, he's not complaining that he can't update his Amazon apps using Google. he's complaining that Google recognizes Amazon apps and there is a perpetual notification to update said app(s).

i'm plagued by the same things. but you are right in one area, it must be idiot thursday.

        • SlimDan22

I have the same problem, i just used Titianium backup to remove the app from the market association.

Only 2 of the 20 Amazon apps i have installed did it though.

        • spydie

did not know you could remove the amazon association with titanium, but sounds like it doesn't work very well. Like everyone else, I'm tired of google reminding me of amazon updates. If I choose to buy at amazon (because they are free or on sale, but not free or on sale at android market (I'll never call it play store), then they should only be tied to Amazon. Android market should never even see them. It's a definite bug.

        • sriracha

you can't remove them from google's market anymore. there is a new system in place the makes the association permanent. back when the market was the Market you could, but since the change to Play Store you can't. ROM Toolbox won't break market links anymore.

i have a few amazon apps that are associated, along with a few Humble Bundle apps that are locked in now. it has to do with the developers key being used. it's not technically a bug.

      • DroidEye

My beef is with Amazon. If they'd push updates within the same time period as Google, I wouldn't be left with a notification that thousands of people got the update before me.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It's not amazon, it's developers who don't update their apps on the appstore.

        • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com Cody Toombs

I'm usually the last to defend Amazon, but both of you guys are kinda taking a bad stance in this argument. With the Play Store a developer can push an app and be certain the Play Store will have it published within an hour or two (dependent on server propagation, the delay is technical instead of procedural). With Amazon, the app has to go through curation just like it would with Apple, which means it's tested by a real person before it can be authorized for release. Like it or not, the procedure with Amazon ensures a delay, but it also gives marginal insurance against malware or severe instability. Most developers push their updates to both services at the same time and everybody who got the app on Amazon has to stare at the update notification for a couple of weeks while Amazon works through the queue. Simply put, you know the way it works and if you don't like it then Amazon is easy to uninstall.

It's definitely true that some developers aren't pushing updates to Amazon anymore (and I don't really blame a few of them considering how badly Amazon has treated so many), but it seems to be a very small minority that have abandoned an app on Amazon while keeping it updated with Google (and most weren't very good/popular apps to begin with).

Truth is, the faulty app is the Play Store. It's finding apps that are not supposed to have a market link and it's treating them the same as apps that do. What makes it worse is that the Play Store takes install information from the phone and pushes it up to the servers, causing 'alternatively owned' apps to be listed as purchased. Google needs to fix this, it's not something Amazon is responsible for. Of course, Amazon is guilty of trying to hijack apps, claiming it has updates to free apps (and sometimes paid) so that it could install the Amazon version and possibly swindle people into going through Amazon for certain things and preventing proper IAP with the Play Store.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Cody, just to be clear, I don't have a problem with the curation delay - I have a problem when devs don't update their apps on Amazon for months, or ever.

        • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com Cody Toombs

@Artem, I should have been more clear in my wording. I know you get how it works, that part wasn't really meant for you, I just bundled the reply to both of you in one comment. Like I said, I'm sure there are devs who have abandoned (or at least gone lazy) apps on Amazon, but I haven't witnessed more than 5-6 examples total, and almost every one of them made very public statements about why they weren't going to continue doing business on Amazon.

Is it much worse than I've seen, are there really that many devs who are actively updating on the market and leaving the appstore behind completely?

I've said it before and I'm sure this won't be the last time, but my plan is to purchase the few free-app-a-day apps that I actually use and uninstall Amazon completely. At this point I'm really just debating if I want to buy two or three apps or switch to alternatives.

      • previn warren

how can i get a Google Play Store App..??

  • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com Cody Toombs

Grr...I skimmed the words "purchased apps" and thought for a second that they'd fixed the bug preventing people from purchasing apps that are already installed...

Then I read the surrounding words...Now I'm disappointed again.

  • http://yash1229.WordPress.com Yash Bhatia

Why can't they just release a changelog?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, that's one way the Amazon Appstore has the Play Store beat - each release has a changelog right in the app.

      • Jays2Kings

The funny part about is is that the Play Store shows the changelog for actual apps, while Amazon doesn't.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

          Indeed, it's ironic.

    • sorandkairi

and....what exactly will you do if you were to receive one.... nothing

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/wwjoshdew Josh

The purchased apps issue, that can be read here.
    http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=27431

  • Tim

I fail to understand why still the app is so laggy. For that matter, the Facebook app, the Skype app - all are super-slow and stuttering on my Galaxy Nexus. What's the point of having an app when it's associated web page loads far faster than the app itself?

  • SlimDan22

My main beef with the PlayStore is how i they merged all the Purchased and Past installed app into one tab.

At least let me delete old apps in my history.

    Other then that its okay.

    • Jonathan Longoria

I wholeheartedly agree. It pisses me off that I have to hunt for apps I purchased but don't have installed right now.

The new google play store is awesome. Thanks for the download links :)

  • Danny365

Here's a modded version of the Play Store App v3.5.16: http://www.megashare.com/4088544

    "Mod version features:
    - Unlimited access to apps in Google Play Store
    - Removed countries restriction in Google Play Store
    - Fixed the issue which your device is not compatible with this item in Google Play Store"

Just in case someone wants to give it a try! I haven't tried it myself, because my phone isn't rooted, which is needed.

    • spydie

Danny365, I'm interested in that modded playstore app. I have a rooted G-note and since it's the international model, some apps are "incompatible". (when they really aren't... omnisketch comes to mind). However, what do you know about this app? the name of it is "vending.apk". Does anyone know if it's safe? Where did you hear about it? We need to track down more info on it before just jumping in and installing an unknown.

      • spydie

just located it on XDA, but everyone is having trouble installing it. When we try to install the new playstore apk, or the mod one, it can't overwrite the old one. The old one in system/app won't delete, rename, nor move. Can't find any way to install the new version. Any suggestions anyone?

  • Mark

Need a CWM flashable ZIP :-)

  • drksilenc

they still havent put the purchased column back so yet again they fail in every respect. i have installed literally thousands of apps to go to the bottom of the list for my purchased app that i purchased almost 2 years ago is a ginormous pain in the a$

  • http://www.dark69slayer.wordpress.com George Solon

    I can't install it .
    Application not installed errors

    • rogue3

I'm getting the same on my SCH-i500. I flashed MIUI 1.12.9 over the weekend and now the Market won't update to Google Play. Thought I'd try this but keep getting Application Not Installed. Not sure what's going on.

      • http://www.dark69slayer.wordpress.com George Solon

I have google play store but its not updating to this one .I even removed the Play Store and tried

        • http://www.dark69slayer.wordpress.com George Solon

          EDIT-
Here is how to do it.
Remove Google Play Store using Titanium Backup .
          Reboot
          Install

        • rogue3

Thanks! I got it to work but had to do a few things first. It would open but nothing would come up. I exited, went into Play Music and clicked on the Store icon and it opened fine but didn't list any of my installed apps. Exited out, went into App Management and cleared the data for Play Store. Then all was fine. Thanks again!

        • spydie

located it in titanium (international g-note) backed it up, then clicked on uninstall... won't uninstall. Circle just keeps going round and round.

  • Chris

Noticed with 3.5.15 when i got the package not signed error, it said to uninstall old version, this version gives the option to do it automatically.

  • TS47

Normally, I would wait for the update for the Play Store to get pushed to my phone. This time I decided, aw what the heck and used the qr code to access the mirror site provided by Android Police and download the update prior to it getting pushed to my phone. Now I have for the first time ever the bug where apps I purchased from Amazon showing up with updates on the Play Store. This bug veryone is discussing must be related to those of us that download the update rather than waiting for it to get pushed to us. Thoughts?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

How you get to point B from point A doesn't matter - you end up with the same version of the same exact apk either way.

      • TS47

I never had this bug before until just now when I used the mirror site here on Android Police to download the Play Store update. Immediately after the update, Play Store started trying to upadte all of my Amazon app store apps. This was not a problem prior to my forcing the app store update. Next time I will wait for it to get pushed to my phone. I've tried uninstalling the apps and reinstalling them through Amazon only to have the Play Store find it again and offer an update. This wouldn't be such a problem if the Play Store wasn't trying to install the free (ad supported) version of Angry Birds over top of the paid (no adds) version I bought from Amazon. I just hung up the phone with Verizon tech support only to find the only way to reset the Play Store is to reset the phone and reinstall everything. Needless to say, I'm really frustrated!! I've never had this problem until I forced the Play Store update.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

The bug is in the Play Store, which Google is responsible for. It's been there since 3.5.15 at least and definitely didn't show up here. I will maintain that if you got the update pushed automatically, it would have the same exact problem. An apk is an apk, how it's delivered doesn't matter.

As for resetting the whole phone just to reset the Play Store, that's absurd - you can Clear Data of the Play Store in Settings and it'd be as good as new.

  • Badger51

I'm still getting error messages and force closes on the Play Store. I've uninstalled the Play store and reinstalled it without any change in behavior.

Anyone else still have problems with the new build?

    • Crazeeboy350

Maybe trying to make more memory space on the phone?, how did you Reinstall it?

  • TS47

I also lost record of all the Play Store apps I purchased, but don't currently have installed.

I think I found a solution though. I went to settings>applictions>manage applications>google play store and hit uninstall updates. I'm currently at version 3.3.12 of the old Google Market. The good news is all of my apps are now correctly listed. I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't have this problem again when the latest update gets pushed to my phone.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Google changed the Play Store to have the 2nd All Apps tab and merged the paid apps with it. Your apps should have always been there, you just need to go through the All Apps list.

      • TS47

I'm not sure I follow your comment. When I click on "My Apps", normally it would show all installed apps AND any apps I puchased but didn't currently have installed. When I just forced the latest update by downloading from the mirror site here on Android Police, in addition to the bug where my Amazon apps got mixed up with the Play Store apps, I also lost the ability to see the apps that I purchased from the Play Store, but hadn't installed. They are normall broken down under "Installed" and "Not Installed" headings under "My Apps". The "Not Installed" heading completely disappeared. Again, uninstalling the Play Store update fixed my problems and took me back, at least for now, to version 3.3.12 of the Google App Store.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

The previous 3.5.15 update brought a 2nd tab called All Apps - look for that, your paid apps should be there. Click the 3.5.15 link at the top of the post and read all the new stuff that came with that update for more info.

      • TS47

Ok, now my phone just updated to the Play Store version 3.4.7. Everything is still normal.

      • TS47

Ahh, I understand. I'm going to wait for that update to get pushed to my phone. Hopefully, I won't have this problem again. Thanks for the help!

        • sriracha

you will. get used to it.

Get Market Fixer by kstudio from the Google Market, it analyzes the market links, and then you can delete the non-Google links. Google is too stupid to use this simple logic.....
