Facebook’s current Android app has become the subject of much hatred from the Android community – for one thing, it rarely works properly (if at all); for another, its looks have become quite stale. Sadly, we still haven’t seen any plans for future improvements, so Redditor monkfishbandana took it upon himself to come up with a mock-up of how he believes Facebook for Android should look, especially with a beautiful OS like Ice Cream Sandwich.

Update: The mocks were updated to v2 - you can view them here (via Reddit). The original mocks are preserved below.

Facebook developers, take note:

FB mock-up 1 FB mock-up 2 FB mock-up 3

FB mock-up 4 FB mock-up 5 FB mock-up 6

FB mock-up 7 FB mock-up 8 FB mock-up 9

Though there are countless improvements over the real Facebook app, a few key features have been excluded for various reasons:

  • The ‘Timeline’ lacks location and ‘studying at’ icons
  • ‘Request’ notifications have been dropped from the action bar and added to the Friends section
  • The ‘Create Event’ and ‘Create Message’ buttons are missing

Still, it’s a pretty impressive first try, especially considering that monkfishbandana claims he’s only spent a few days on it. Enjoy the beauty, because sadly you likely won’t be seeing any of it on your phone any time soon!

butt wwhyyyyy nottss?? this is gorgeous compared to oh so laggy official app

  • acidic-e-

omg if this was real I might actually install the fb app again O.o

Wait, Facebook has app developers on staff? I just thought they were there to sell ad space.....

  • http://www.thepixelpuse.com aj

This needs to happen. If some dude can do it in his spare time, Facebook's mobile team shouldn't have an excuse.

    • Ken

      Couldn't agree more!

image mockups and programming it are two wildly divergent things.

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Yes, clearly there is a development step, but nothing in those mockups is outrageously hard to implement. Facebook doesn't want to redesign and doesn't want to let go because they don't are attached to the current design, which has enough problems on the technical side to worry about a new design. The recent design is already relatively new, and it takes many months from mockups to release.

        • Randy

So they have no problem changing EVERYTHING about the actual website every 6 months or so, but they can't redesign an app? I'd think it would be easier to redesign an app than redesigning their entire platform, like they did with timeline (Which looks like MySpace to me.)

      • Casey

From the Android side it wouldn't be too bad. But I don't know what the Facebook API's look like so I don't know how the entire project would look. I want to say I would try something like this, but I can't help but feel like there HAS to be someone already significantly invested into something similar. I can't be the only one to dig into android development and notice how unnecessarily mediocre most apps are.

  • Dan

Such a shame, it looks so good but I doubt it will happen. Isn't the Facebook api doodad a Web view, and hence why friendcaster and Facebook look pretty identical when it comes down to it? I really want an app like this.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Pretty sure the Facebook app uses HTML5 and webviews but it doesn't mean their API forces you to. I can't imagine an API that would, that'd be ridiculous.

  • NCX

Facebook should be taking some notes, thats a gorgeous clean looking app

  • Josh

Good design! Matches ICS style perfectly. If the app looked like this I just might join facebook.

  • http://android.sketaful.se Sketaful

Oh my. I'd love that one..

  • Rafael

Someone should just make this! There are many unofficial Facebook apps out there and if they aren't going to do it, I would love to see someone else give it a shot. Maybe the team behind friendcaster...

  • Jaime

If a dev made this, I'd pay for it in an instant

  • Rob

I prefer how the official app looks

    • Chris

      That makes one of you

I saw it but it looks like a clusterfuck to me. All over the place. Basically, kind of ICSy but at the same time kind of like 4chan.

My Timeline publishes on the 8th. On that date I will be deleting my account. However, if the app looks like this ever, I will definitely make an account to use like a feed reader.

    • Randy

My Timeline went live today. Unfortunately, I can't really delete my account b/c I have 2 pages that I admin from it, otherwise I would be doing the same. Timeline is a POS, looks like MySpace, and posts randomly change sides of the timeline while you're in the middle of reading it.

  • Kam

too bad it'll never come to fruit. you know why? BECAUSE Facebook is going "thermal nuclear" with yahoo and focusing every man, woman and child on crushing yahoo.

either that or Mark Zuckerass got something stuck up his rear....

ps. nice job on the concept artwork...

  • dago

    It looks like G+

  • Nexuz-Uno

Maybe it'll be a bit faster now. :p Jk. It better be A LOT faster.

  • http://www.boidapp.com Phil Oakley

Team Boid will make this once Boid is finished.

Contacting the designer now so we can work with him.

    I love this look!

I will try to make this, but no promises except that I will do my very best.

I am tired of using the mobile Web page to browse Facebook, instead of an application.
We also need more Holo styled apps!

maybe flip the grey and the blue colors? makes it look more facebooky

  • Victor

Just because something follows the android guidelines doesn't mean it's a perfect match for an app. This mockup doesn't "look" like facebook so it's a failed attempt. I hate how all of a sudden everyone now thinks they are a UI designer because they looked at the design guide.

    • Alan Tucker

Elaborate please, why doesn't it "look" like Facebook?
