When it comes to must-have tools installed on my desktop, laptop, tablets, and phones, Dropbox is close to the very top of the list. Having access to your data anytime, anywhere, from any device, is an absolute godsend, and anyone who isn't yet using Dropbox is missing out on an insanely useful service.

For those who are using Dropbox, though, you probably know how easy it is to score some free space by getting your friends to sign up for the service with your referral code. Up to this point, you've been able to garner an additional 8GB with your free 2GB account, for a total of 10GB. Now, though, Dropbox has decided it would be a good idea to double that number, and we all tend to agree - more free storage is better, after all.

Beginning today, all referrals for free accounts are worth 500MB each, and 1GB for pro accounts. Since the amount per referral has doubled, so has the amount of total storage: 16GB for free accounts and 32GB for pro accounts. All free.

Here's the best part, though: if you've already maxed out all of your referrals (as I have), this promotion is completely retroactive. Give the DB team a few days, and you'll see that you have around 8GB more cloud storage. For example, I now have 24GB of Dropbox space. And that's just awesome.

So, if you haven't already, it's time to start sharing that referral link.

The minute I saw the headline I said out loud the first comment would be somebody sharing a dropbox link!

  • kam

i used it since day one and loved it. i acquired over 20 gigs of free cloud storage :)!

btw.... here's the link to my referral! lol j.k...

  • Icefreez

Of course. Everyone wants more free space. :)

  • Tratious

how do the service compare to Box?, I use Box they gave me 50GB free just to sign up back when they were doing their special promo.

    • Cameron Summerson

There's a desktop client, no upload limit, no file size limitation, etc. It's superior in every way. Box may offer 50GB, but its limitations make it nearly worthless.

    • Tim

If you ever want to upload anything larger than 100 mb, then yes, so much better.
I love dropbox. They don't care what you sync or how large a file is. Plus they have a lot of opporunities to get more free space. Not 50gb, but still. I haven't used a bit of my 50 free gigs at box, because most things I want to sync are going to be larger than 100mb.

Remember, if you link an .edu email to your account, your referrals are worth double, both to you AND the person signing up through you.

  • Skyler

I've noticed that my 'per referral' amount has NOT gone up.

I used the education bonus they had that doubled your referrals to 500MB. When I saw this I was hoping it would stack with the education bonus, but it looks like that's not the case.

  • RBI411

Wish theyd continue to double the amount for referrals by people with a linked .edu email address.

I noticed that I had to quit my desktop Dropbox service and restart for the counter to update, but logging in via the web service immediately shows the upgrade. Fantastic customer service, Dropbox.

Dude, If your going to abbreviate then at least be consistent with it.
Better yet learn to write without constantly referencing the name of things. words like "they" are good.

  • Yotam

I had 25GB because of the HTC glitch, and now they've been reduced spontaneously to 4GB only.
Did that happen to anyone else?

    • J-Dog

Yeah.... I just checked to see if I had gotten the new referral bump yet, and it looks like the extra bonus space is gone on my account as well.

I don't know if they found out people were getting space without an HTC device & removed it, or if our accounts got discredited thanks to the bump in referral space or ...

Think I'm going to wait until I see the bump in referral space, then hunt up the apk files again & try to re-install the HTC bumps. See if I get the space back or ...

They removed all the fraudulent or otherwise fake 23GB bumps.

    • J-Dog

Sorry for the double reply, but I did run across this a little after posting here, and since I apparently can't edit my initial reply, as Artem mentioned, they removed the 23GB bumps, apparently they were specifically for the HTC One, which hasn't been released yet, so those of us who had already claimed it... ooops :)

If you want more space, sign in to Box.net. There you have 50 GBs of free space as an Android user.

No more need for referral links...

  • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I've cleaned up all the ref link begging in the comments. Please don't do that.

  • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Mine took a while but went up retroactively tonight. Sweetness!
