The Google Voice app received an update today that is sure to make frequent GV users quite happy: voicemail integration in the dialer for Android 4.0 devices. Gone are the days of hopping on the computer or launching the GVoice app to listen to your voicemail, as it's now integrated directly into the ICS dialer, much like we saw at the Android 4.0 announcement back in October.

The update also brings quick access to all folders directly from the inbox. Instead of having to navigate through two menus before being able to access the folder you're looking for, you can now just tap the dropdown box and go directly to any of your folders.

The update is available now in the Play Store - hit the widget to grab it.

Whooo hoooo!!!! I've been needing this! Especially easy access to my folders. I wondered why they didn't use the dropdown when they use it in almost all their other apps (Maps Gmail, Docs, etc)

They also made the icons more ICS-esque

Any chance of Google Voice coming to the UK? Only had the app for about a year or so.

Still waiting for MMS support by Google Voice and possible openness on Google's part to allow developers to take text messages from Google Voice onto their app such as GO SMS.

    • Tim

I think the MMS issue is a result of the carrier. I imagine they blocked it or whatever because it sort of works for Sprint, no?

      • J-Dog

I wouldn't put it past them (SMS/MMS are probably the biggest income for carriers) but I don't think they have any influence on this front. I think its more Google trying to figure out the best way to transmit the data, or some other technical issues. Probably similar to why you couldn't initially MMS on the iPhone.

After all, if it were the carriers, I should be able to log into google.com/voice & be able to send/receive MMSs through the website, side-stepping my mobile carrier completely.

To the carriers, it should just look like any other data being sent to/from the phone. So if they are blocking it, I'm sure that would give Google some ammo for a net neutrality suit against the carriers. And if the carriers were to block MMSs from GV, I'd assume they'd also want to block SMSs (I know I send way more SMS, which would net them a lot more $), or any of the other random SMS/MMS replacement apps out there...

PLEASE NOTE: It seems you have to activate the viewing of voicemails in the dialer from the GV app settings. It'll pull in old ones too.

Thanks, was wonder if the article was missing a step

Hmmm I just updated and left a test voicemail but got no notification in my dialer. Just my normal one from GV.

Look 5 minutes into the past

  • pres

All well and good sounds great. The 4 or 5 people that have ICS on their phones should enjoy it.

    • Lorenzo in a Benzo

4 or 5 people eh? Try millions. Don't cry cause your phone hasnt got the update.

I'm just upset with the whole thing. All the big talk and promises that were never kept. I did have ICS on my phone, the "leaked" version but wasn't really impressed with it so I went back to stock and waiting to see if the real thing is any better.

What pres is trying to say here, quite sarcastically, is that ICS is only on 1.6% of all Android devices http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html, which isn't that much. At all. Not yet anyway. I must say, adoption of ICS seems to be much slower than Gingerbread, which saddens me.

        • livelyppop

Thanks Artem that is exactly what I was trying to say.

Just add the VM text within the Phone app and it will be perfect.

I never had a problem opening the Google Voice app for voicemails, but this is a handy update. I like the better UX for the folders too.

This makes me want CM9 even more. Soon enough, hopefully.

  • Luly

Love the new update on my GNex!

  • ICSKing

Has this version been optimized for tablets?

    • thedude

      ...that's a no.

  • Brian

And it STILL lacks the ability to select multiple messages at once. *sigh*

  • BK

Is anybody else missing the folder drop-down box with the new update? Unless my reading comprehension skills have failed me, I understand that the dropdown should be available even for non-ICS phones.

I do appreciate this update but I was hoping they would have fixed the threading issue in Google voice. Is there any way to keep all texts from one contact together? It has always separates threads into "conversations" :/
