A new Android Market Google Play Store v3.5.15 (an update to v3.4.7) is very slowly trickling through to Android users everywhere, and we managed to snag an APK you can download and install right now (thanks, Chad Winner!). After playing with it for a few minutes, the most obvious change is most definitely in the My Applications UI, although I did find a few more (thanks to everyone who helped out).

What's New

  1. You now have the Installed and All tabs you can swipe between. The former one is what we used to have before - it lists all apps installed on your device. The latter lists all apps you've ever installed in case you want to download them again or travel down the memory lane. This is quite handy, and I've seen this list before in the Play Store on the web, so it's great to get it here in the mobile app.
  2. The All tab contains a handy dropdown with all your accounts (if you added more than one) and lets you switch between them very easily (as opposed to clicking Menu, etc).
  3. The list of apps you have purchased but uninstalled or haven't installed yet has moved to the All tab... which means it's now mixed in with the free apps you no longer have on the device. I'm not sure how I feel about that - on one hand, I like that it's gone from the first list, but ideally there should be a way to filter paid apps from free in the All list. Maybe someday...
  4. A few of the stock apps that apparently never got linked to the Play Store before got identified and picked up this time, and updates to such orphans were waiting for me when I fired the Store up. I've complained about this very bug in my last rant, and it looks like someone listened.
  5. Just like in the web Play Store:
    - reviews now show the device used by the reviewer
    - reviews can now be sorted by Most Helpful first or Newest first
    - you can now filter reviews to show ones for the latest version of the app as well as made by only the device you are using

wm_SC20120316-001535 wm_SC20120316-001851 wm_SC20120316-001918

wm_SC20120316-020755 wm_SC20120316-020758 wm_SC20120316-020805

We'll keep digging, but these changes are already pretty good to warrant downloading this update. Don't fret - it's completely legitimate, otherwise the signature verification process that's built into Android for security wouldn't have allowed me to install it over the existing Play Store.

Download

Download away (change the extension to .apk if your browser downloads it as something else for some reason, like a .zip or .bin).

Thanks, Chad!

Now, we don't have "purchased but not installed"

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

We still do but they're all mixed in with the free apps now.

      • ler

Not very handy, but still great update. I even feel some placebo effect in launch speed.

  • tyler walles

For some reason it linked several of my amazon app store apps and now I get a download error... cause I didn't buy it from the play store... it gets kinda annoying

    • TKL

I agree. It would be nice if we could hide those apps from the list.

      • http://codytoombs.wordpress.com Cody Toombs

It seems like a really flaky fix (at least it has been on my HTC Sense-based rom), but if you use an app that can break the market link (ie, Titanium Backup, MyBackup Pro, etc), that tends to help with preventing the Market/'Play Store' from wanting to update apps...but I haven't tested it extensively and I'm not sure if it works with the latest couple of versions.

        • tyler walles

Yeah... I've used titanium backup to break the links several times, but the get reattached with every reboot

        • Barton

It works with latest versions excluding the one in this post. I have no problem with 3.4.7, but after updating to 3.5.15 Titanium Backup Pro (latest at the moment 4.8.4) loses the option to detach from the Market and even doesn't backup Market links. So I rolled back to 3.4.7 for now.

    • Leo

That's the reason I never used (and never will) other markets.

  • Krs_Won

Had 7 apps that needed updated on my Razr after the new 3.5.15 installed. Weirdest was MOG music which all of a sudden needs access to sensitive info. Nope.

Definitely like the installed/all apps tabs.

    • Krs_Won

Now if Google could just bring the long-press to update a single app. Too many steps if just one app needs updating. It should at least take you to the accept and approval page if permissions change.

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Totally, I've been preaching for that ever since they took it out.

It would also help get around the annoying update bug where the update is showing in the list but not when you click through to the individual app.

    • Ed

Funny that, I updated 2 apps and had one more to do prior to the installing the update. Once installed I had 4 additional updates.

  • Ed

Does anyone else see an app with no title, and no option to uninstall, by TIMOTHYMILLA, in their apps list?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

This is the developer https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=TimothyMilla, not sure why you have an app without a title or option to uninstall. Did you by chance push an apk by this developer manually, off-Market, before?

    • SoFloEasycore

I went ahead and opened the mysterious TIMOTHYMILLA app and it pulled up the game "Teeter" on my Evo 4G, can't uninstall since it's pre-installed bloat and I'm not rooted.

      • Bobby Tables

I have a similar problem with Asus weather on my TF201.. The market shows it as an app I never installed and never will. When I disconnect it via Titanium Backup it gets reconnected every few days. Btw. I am still using the 3.4 market.

  • ZZ

Reviews have also changed. Aside from the slight design tweak, you can now sort by most helpful/Newest, as well as filter by similar device/newest version.

    • Loranz

Same here. How can we solve this?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

This is most likely due to the Amazon thing mentioned above. Those apps were probably installed via the Amazon Appstore, GetJar, or other means and signed with a different key. You'd have to uninstall them to be able to update/install through the Play Store.

      • Me

I don't think it is. I'm getting the same error attempting to install the .apk and I don't even have the Amazon AppStore installed (UK user).

Galaxy Nexus running AOKP Milestone 4 with GApps-20120304

        • Me

I managed to get it installed by uninstalling the Store using Titanium Backup, and then attempting to install the .apk.

  • Marius

Snap, now even more apps downloaded from Amazon appstore are tied to my Google Play and prompt me for updates in Google Play, which of course i can't, being bought in Amazon Appstore. I wish damn Google would solve this problem soon, i'm getting tired of this crap.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Weird that mine didn't do it at all. None of the Amazon apps showed up in that list. I wonder why people are having issues with that and what makes my situation different.

      • Marius

Wouldn't be so annoying if only Amazon updated their apps sooner than later or never. This way i'm stuck with those apps prompting for an update forever and there's no fix for that yet if you don't have root.

      • Zomby

Might be because the app you got from Amazon are already up to date and don't need updating according to Play. But if they don't appear anywhere in the list, then I have no clue.

  • Fabian

My installed apps are not shown after update. Just getting a blank window.

The mobile version of this page is awful. I had to switch user agents to see anything useful.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

See below. It was an error that is now fixed.

    • DeX

If you think this is awful, try browsing some mainstream sites, like engadget or cnet. :p

Actually this site is one of the few that work decently on a mobile browser. My only gripe was the polls didn't work with Opera, but that's easily fixed by using the stock browser.

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

In his defense, nothing was working on the mobile site at all at the time.

  • DaX05

    Thanks!

The mobile version of your website flat out SUCKS! I tried Opera, Chrome & the stock android browser and there's nothing. Guys, revamp that mobile site. Not complaining, just letting you guys. :)

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

There was an issue with the latest code push that broke the mobile site. Thanks for spotting the problem and alerting me - I've fixed it now.

  • Ze

In "All" tab of my apps menu i can see all the previously downloaded apps which i had already uninstalled show up with the indication that they are free is this being picked up from my phone? or is this data stored by Google Play??

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

This data was always stored by Google but not exposed in the app until now. It was always exposed in the web market though.

  • http://justreboot.wordpress.com Dei

I just noticed that I can't detach apps in Titanium Backup from the Market (Play) anymore. Did this feature get removed, or am I just missing it somehow? Used to be able to get it from long-pressing an app. (Wizz Widgets is broken for me beyond 1.8.35, updating it by accident would suck)

    • sriracha

i'm using ROM Toolbox and it won't break market links either.

    • Joe

Seems the new market update broke the feature in titanium.. I messaged the dev

    • Joe

I advised the Titanium dev that it seems the new market update broke th feature.

    Nice Post! Worked for me!

  • Tom

Yea but it gets annoying when you look at your history and then have to go back to the beginning of all instead of remembering where you left off previously.

  • squiddy20

"I'm not sure how I feel about that - on one hand, I like that it's gone from the first list, but ideally there should be a way to filter paid apps from free in the All list."

Or at least separate the free, purchased, and installed apps into sections within the column like it was in the previous version. The way it's showing for me, the apps are completely jumbled (installed next to purchased, then a free, then back to installed for instance), and the only order to it appears to be last downloaded/installed first. Kinda stupid if you ask me...

    • L boogie

I agree and the store should also specify which apps are available or not, kept getting error on apps that were purchased but no longer available as well as apps I got outside the market but can't install due to non-purchase but yet telling me purchased.

  • Chahk

Overall good update. Now all that's missing is the "Don't remind me of future updates for this app" option, like in aTrackDog.

    • http://justreboot.wordpress.com Dei

I'd settle for a 'don't update this app' button.

      • Shawn

this is something that i've wanted for a while now.
example: the camera360ultimate update from march 1st completely blows, ruins the app IMHO, and i intend on keeping the previous version as long as possible. so when i have 8 apps that need updating, i have to update them individually, or do the supertricky update them all, then quickly cancel the camera update...

  • hassan

you can also search the store from the google search app just like contacts and music

  • Eddy315west

Would be nice to to have the ability to remove or delete apps you tried out on there before off all your list . And delete devices off the list especially if u dont have them anymore cuz the hide doesnt work(Fail)

  • Diane

How do you get back android market instead of Google play?

    • Flatlinebb

I don't think you can, Diane, since Android Marked doesn't exists anymore.

    • Reonte93

I went to the settings menu in my phone and clicked Factory Reset and Google Play turned back into Android Market...I hope this helps! :)

  • stephan

i like to know too how to remove old apps from the ALL section so they don't show anymore on my device, like tablet market who's link to my tablet, which i don't need to see on my phone. (only on my tablet)

Nice! I've got a lot of apps on my phone and would often get several 'apps with updates', do a batch update when busy and then promptly forget which apps where updated. Now the 'All' view sorts the apps in order of their last update instead of aphabetically. Dunno, maybe it was on the old version and I just never stumbled upon it...

"Teeter" Why is this on my phone? @ days ago it was not there? Pre-installed huh I have had this phone for a year! Was it hiding? It is not listed at Timothymilla as one of their apps? This is just more Bloatware...covert spyware by Google. If not why is it there and no way to get rid of it.

  • Dark

Love the update, but unfortunately had to revert back to 3.4.7. Ran into an issue when trying to install the 6.5 update to google maps. For some reason the new store doesn't register any apps that came preinatalled. Google maps being one of them. I can't find any preinstalled apps in my apps list, but when I do a search the market shows they are installed. When I tried to update maps manually it gives me an error message. Then when I hit the unistall button it tells me that the app was not installed by the play store. I reverted back to 3.4.7 and everything is back to normal. I'd say this is a major bug in the new store.

    • Dark

Update. I used the 3.5.15 play store from a link on xda and it now works properly and shows my preinstalled apps in my apps. Don't know why the 1 I downloaded from here didn't work properly.
