Roku owners, rejoice! An official app is now available in the Market that lets you use your Android device as a remote control for your Roku box as long as both are on the same Wi-Fi network.

The app allows you to navigate your Roku box from afar, including launching channels, control media playback, and finding new channels. It also offers text entry via your devices on-screen keyboard, as well as back and options buttons.

For those with multiple Roku players, the app can easily switch between and control multiple devices. The app should work with all Roku players, but the Market listing notes that if the app doesn't find your Roku device, you should toggle Wi-Fi on both the player and your Android device.

It's about time they released their Android app, although I don't see myself using it that much as I much prefer my Harmony remotes.

Doesn't work for me, even using their troubleshooting guide. Apparently I'm not the only one either. Hopefully they get this fixed soon. It has promise.

meh, i've HAD the roku remote by Ethan Allison

Whoever Roku hired for this should be sued out of business for the benefit of other companies hiring for Android development. It is unfathomable that hobbyist developers have no problems writing fine apps for this, but the official app simply does not work.

I present, for entertainment value, my chat with Roku on their support page:

    Prem
Hello Andrew. How may I help you?

    Andrew
    hello

I just downloaded the android app, and like most of the commenters, it does not connect to either of my rokus

i have an a third party app that works fine

    what is going on?

    Prem
    We are here to help!

    Please give me a moment.

    Are using iphone?

    Andrew
    android

    Prem
We haven't tested with the android application. So it may or may not work. So it's better to use Roku remote or if you have iphone you can use it.

    Andrew
yes, an official android app was just released

    Prem
yes. But it may or may not work on android application.

    Andrew
an android remote control app was released by roku. it is official. it does not work as can plainly be seen in the comments. what is going on?

    Prem
    Just a moment.

Could you please tell me the model number of your mobile?

    Andrew
    AT&T Samsung Galaxy SII -- Samsung-SGH-I777

    Prem
Could you please tell me the serial number of your Roku player?

    Andrew
    just a minute

    Prem
    Ok

    Andrew
    XXXXXXXXXXX

    Roku 2 XS

I have another older one on the network as well, but I mainly need this one for now.

    Prem
    Ok.

It is not actually a official android application. And we haven't tested the application. So, that's the reason it's not getting connecting to your Roku player.

    Andrew
It is available on the Android Market!!! Blogs are noting its existence. Email and developer info go to Roku and it LOOKS official. If it is not, Roku should immediately contact Google and have it shut down.

    Prem
Could you please tell me the version of the android?

    Andrew
    2.3.6

Does Roku have an official Android app or not?

    Prem
I am sorry. It wont work with this version.

The version should be 4 and above.

    Andrew
When choosing to install, I get the message: This app is compatible with all of your devices.

this is controlled by the developer and there is no reason it should not work on 2.3 (this is on 99.9% of Androids out there).

    Prem
I am sorry. It wont work with this version.
The version should be 4 and above.

    Andrew
    REQUIRES ANDROID:
    2.1 and up

that message is on the Market page. This is from the developer, i.e. Roku

First you told me there is not an Android app which was false. Now you are telling me that Android 4.0 is required which is also false. What is going on?

    Prem
    Please give me a moment.

    Thank you for waiting.

It will work with all the devices but the IOS should be 4.1

    Andrew
IOS is not Android. This is comical. Please transfer me to someone else.

    Prem
Andrew, shall I call you back?

    Andrew
Please transfer me to someone else.

    Prem
I will assign you a call back, Andrew.

    Andrew
    ok

You just made my day XD

    • noscamiam

Funny, but sad. I too have an S2 with the same problem.

    • Hiram Lester

That is too awsome. BTW, the app would work if you were running Windows 7 on your Galaxy S. :p

  • http://cheapandroidtabletphones.blogspot.com/ ANDROID TABLET PHONES

Doesn't work on behalf of me, even using their troubleshooting guide. Apparently i am not the sole one either. Hopefully they get this mounted soon. it's promise.

  • denbo

Been using RokuByte and it works pretty well.

  • Lon Lawrence

They are right. It requires ICS. I tried it on my Galaxy Note... wouldn't work. Tried it on my Transformer Prime... works beautifully. they just need someone to change the "Requires Android: 2.1 an up" statement. Galaxy note should have ICS the end of this month.

I've been using Gregg Reno's Roku Remote for months now. Works like a charm on my Froyo phone and tablet, and has a nice UI with skin options. The dev is very responsive, too.
