Rumors of an upcoming ruggedized handset for AT&T made their way around the 'net earlier this week, and that handset is now a reality on Big Blue. The Samsung Rugby Smart is a waterproof, dustproof, and extreme temperature-resistant mid-range handset, perfect for the outdoorsman (or anyone who is prone to destroying devices):

  • 3.7-inch 480*800 Super AMOLED display
  • 4GB internal storage, microSD card slot
  • 5 MP rear shooter
  • 1.3 MP front camera
  • Dustproof
  • Waterproof (submergible up to 1 meter for 30 minutes)
  • 1650mAh battery
  • Android 2.3

If the Rugby Smart sounds like the rugged handset you've been waiting for, you can make it yours on March 4th for $99 with a two-year agreement.

This is great because I've been wanting to make phone calls while snorkeling for years now. Oh wait, no I don't. Why do I need a waterproof phone again?

Congrats, you score points for explaining why YOU don't need this phone...it's good everybody else is just like you.

I happen to be like you, I don't care in the least about a phone being super durable or waterproof. Of course, I had a discussion with a buddy of mine who's a volunteer Search and Rescue guy who wanted to seal his phone in a vacuum food bag to solve this exact issue. I also know some building contractors who are notoriously bad on their phones, those guys only ever buy rugged phones. Sure, the specs suck and it's obviously overpriced and not for everybody, but there are some people who will definitely want this.

On a separate note, unless that screen is protected by a roll cage, I can't imagine calling it a rugged phone if it's still easy to crack.

Screen is probably sunken in and made from Gorilla Glass, which would make it very durable. I've dropped my Atrix a number of times, on concrete, etc. and I only have a few 1-2mm scratches, they're very shallow and look/feel like dust. EVERYTHING that is glass should be Gorilla Glass.

I have a lot of friends that still think tossing someone into the pool is clever, so waterproof is a definite plus. I can see the big rice conglomerates suing though...
