Droid X OTA Update (Build 4.5.621) Rolling Out Now, Brings Bug Fixes A-Plenty

Droid X users, Motorola and Verizon haven't forgotten about you; not completely, at least. You may not be getting Ice Cream Sandwich (officially, anyway), but Big Red is pushing one hell of a bug-fix update (we spotted it last week) to your device right now.

The OTA update brings fixes to a whole slew of issues that DX users have been dealing with for far too long:

Over the Air Updates

  • Prevents lockups or resets after the Over the Air (OTA) update.
  • OTA update notice screen displays the correct estimated update time.

Device Features

  • Improved browser security with the Google Security Patch from Android 2.3.6.
  • Fixed issue where the device may power ON without user interaction.
  • Resolved possible device resets while playing music.
  • Adjusted camera settings will be saved, even after the device is powered down.
  • Reduced Out of Memory errors.
  • WAV files can be played from Visual Voice Mail.
  • Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
  • Improved stability of Music Player reduces resets.
  • Shortcuts to applications remain on the device even after applications are moved to the SD card.

Email, Messaging, & Data

  • Improved connectivity with 3G Mobile Hotspot data connectivity.
  • Addressed error that replicated thumbnails in message threads.
  • Corrected errors where Yahoo! mail notifications were not displayed properly.
  • Reduced duplicate message errors.
  • Improved ability to access and receive Gmail when the Mobile Hotspot is turned on.
  • Sorted contact groups.
  • Device recognizes Multimedia ringtones after purchase.

Accessories

  • Button background lighting turns off while in the desktop cradle.

Okay, so it's not be the major device overhaul that you may have been hoping for, but at least it'll make your device function better, and that's always a good thing.

To pull the update manually, head into Settings and hit About phone > System Updates >  Download. Otherwise, just hold tight and the update should hit your device soon enough.

    Or run one of the many custom ROMs. I was on MIUI for a long time, but just couldn't deal with the battery life. Rolling Vortex RC1 right now and it is a night/day difference for my battery. I miss the customizations of MIUI/CM but this is super lightweight.

    Seriously, anything's better than stock.

    I've also been rolling Vortex RC1. I enjoyed MIUI/CM and couldn't handle the battery life [or lack thereof].

    I find a certain irony to 2 fixes being related to fixing OTA Updates...given that this is probably the last OTA Update this phone is likely to get

    So if this plugs the root exploit... Any chance, like the initial gingerbread update, there might be a pre-rooted copy of the update floating around or something...

    I lost root when my old handset FUBAR'ed on me & I had to get a replacement... Haven't been able to get Pete's or XYZ to root the phone yet (haven't really played with it too much)... Would like too upgrade but not if it costs me the ability to (at some point) get the phone rooted....

    Awsome update. My wife and both noticed our phones seem faster after usuding the update for a day. Playing X Place the video is noticeably smoother. Battery life seems improved. Good update. Thank you motorolla.

    The lighted touch keys only light up when its bright, not in the dark when I need them, did third get fixed ? Or how can I fix it manually ?

    Ok...so im taking a big risk here devulging this but i think i, as a motorola employee, owe it to all loyal moto phone owners. The . 621 push was an intentional lock-out by my employer to discourage "root" users and 3rd party devs. This is going to be pushed to all moto handsets on all major carriers in the near future. Verizon, for one, has repeatedly complained to us about the use of "free" teathering and various other benifits of "rooting" our handsets.

       FoxFi no longer works on my Driod X, even after updating FoxFi to the latest release. PDANet tethering seems not to work either!!!

        So glad I waited to update....can't loose foxfi or pda net. Anyone know if update will force me at some point?

      At first I thought foxfi didn't work when My computer didn't connect.  I told my computer to detect problems then after a few "fixes" it connected just fine.

    hi there, i got this update and it is total and complete CRAP. The STATUS BAR ON TOP, the one that you bring down and see if you have any messages and all that, well that disappears.. i turn off my phone and it works... but minutes later it just disappears... And my phone keeps yelling "droid" and i dont know what the notification is for. it is pissing me off.

      Is the "droid" your email notification?  If so, mine does the same thing (I use a different sound, but it seems in the new build if you leave an unread email it will notify you of it again periodically).

    So I just downloaded this update, and guess I'll see if I notice any changes. Really disappointing that this means I won't be likely to get ICS, but wasn't expecting much even if I had. Compared to iOS, android generally impresses me as a very half baked, compromised solution. App selection is still much better on iOS, and even when same app is available on both, often the android version just isn't the same quality, not working nearly as well. Long story as to how I ended up with a droid, but if you want a FREE DROID X, and can TAKE OVER MY UNLIMITED Verizon contract, (NO LONGER OFFERED TO NEW VERIZON CUSTOMERS, - I was told I can pass mine on however, but you must be able to pass credit check to put contract in your name)give me a call - 510-473-6042

    I am SOOOO glad they fixed the issue of the shortcut icons disappearing for every one of my SD Card apps each time I used the USB Mass Storage mode.

    There was no excuse for that problem. It was just a flat out oversight in the previous update.

    Since the "update" my Droid X has worked far worse than before! the bugs it is suppose to fix still happen, more frequently it seems.  Camera response is even slower! often I can't access the media gallery, among other problems.. Way to shaft your customers Verizon!

      My experience has been similar.  Guess my next phone won't be a Motorola.

    This will break root. You can freeze Updater and Upgrader to prevent the download, or you can get "OTA KeepRoot" so that you can update your phone and then turn root back on. Once you update your root is gone indefinitely.

    I'd say this article should be "Brings BUGS A-Plenty".

    I made the mistake of taking the OTA update, lost root, and based on what I've read, I can't go back.  My phone is slower, and it is sucking down battery so bad that Android OS has been taking more juice than the display (I've been trying to find an app to blame, but so far no good), and typing has been worse.  Seems like this was Big Red releasing a big turd to try and get us to pay for a big upgrade.

    Yes this update is horrible, my phone is now much slower and the picture Gallery does not function at all. The phone is now totaly untrustworthy. This is a way I believe to force customer to upgrade to the new plans and phones and have to pay more subscription fee.

    these aren't the best phones, I mean, how bout try something that's more reliable? Like Iphone 4, 4S or even 5......
