Yep, I'm 100% serious. Right now, on my phone, is an alpha, proof-of-concept build of Portal. No, it's not official (it's definitely not supported by VALVe Software in any way), but it is tantalizingly awesome. Now, before you ask, we aren't going to link to the apk - it's from a pretty sketchy source. But if you look hard enough, you'll probably be able to find it out there in some of the darker corners of the web.

The thing is, you probably wouldn't want to play it, because there's actually not much to play. It's more proof of concept than anything, but it's a concept we very much like, and that basically seems to work - you listening, VALVe?

These screenshots are essentially the extent of the concept build - it doesn't go much further (you fall out of the bottom of the first elevator). Check out the video of the full level:

As you can see, it does pretty much work (the choppy FPS is caused by our recording app). The best part, though, is the quality of the graphics in this unofficial port clone (it was developed using Unity, and since Portal is not open source, "clone" is a more correct term). Everything looks pretty great (except the portals, they haven't quite figured that part out yet), and the controls work decently, too. Will this game ever get off the ground? It's hard to say - this is a Russian piece of software, so it's unlikely VALVe will be able to do anything to stop it, if development continues.

Obviously, you'll never see this on the Market or any other remotely legitimate app store, but the concept has us absolutely drooling. If a fly-by-night development team can get this far, we can't help but think VALVe hasn't already started to explore the idea, too.

Controls would be difficult on a touchscreen, methinks.

Android isn't limited to a touchscreen. Just think of the Transformer with a USB mouse attached. The perfect gaming platform!

A tilt interface (all three dimensions) for Portal would be awesome! It's perfect for a tablet (or even a large screen phone).

    May I post dl link y/n ?

It can be easily found on Google, we'd rather not have links to questionable sites.

I really do hope Valve will jump into Android as a game developer.

    • Román Rodríguez

Epic Games entered on Android market as a developer. They started with Epic Citadel. Hope Valve joins the dark side, too. :)

Very cool. I'll admit, I'd rather have Portal on my 3DS than my Android phone, but it would be awesome either way.

Btw, the original post says "Игра будет чисто как на PC, а пока что только первый уровень и лифт глючит, в нём надо прыгать много раз."

Which means "the game will be exactly like on PC, but for now it's just the first level and a buggy elevator, you need to jump many times to get it to work."

It also says the person in charge of this port, or whatever it is, is Rustam0241 (Tibers).

I found the original link at that website that is almost infamous in my eyes, but the apk leads to a 404 :( Can you rehost that apk?

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

        It's only 404 if you don't register.

        • Ian Stephenson

Oh my, that explains so much, lol. Thanks!

    This isn't a port. It's a clone.

You're right, I tweaked the post a bit to reflect this.

found the link, haven't tried it yet though.

What have they *really* accomplished here, though? It's a very small 3D level, and 1 point that teleports you to another point. No portal gun, no actual portals (in the sense that you can see through them etc), just a very small 3D room you can walk around it, and pick things up.

I'm sure they could make a good game with those ingrediants, but not Portal. The crucial thing is a working portal gun and proper portals - neither of which are trivial.

What you see here are the 'easiest' bits, stuff that pretty much anyone would have assumed was easily doable.

Holy shit whatever i do it does not let me register....

Portalizer is way more amazing and is NOT DEAD. This thing died when the creator asked Valve if it was legal. Portalizer is in fact legal and is on Google Play.
