Google Voice received its first major update in some time earlier today, undergoing a major UI refresh for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices (Gingerbread devices only see minor changes, such as the app icon), as well as new interface for Honeycomb and ICS tablets. Under the hood, SMS offline message queuing is now supported and works for multiple recipients.

Unfortunately, it still is ungodly slow to load on my Gingerbread phone, and scrolls like something from Android 1.6. I hear it's a lot smoother on Ice Cream Sandwich, though. Hit up the Market to download it now.

It looks nicer than the original, but they still have the ugly gingerbread refresh and compose icons

Agreed! It looks so nice apart from that...

There seems to be a new option in the settings menu (unless it was there before and I didn't knotice it) to receive text messages only via the google voice app or also through the messaging app. I can't seem to get it to work though, as when trying to save the setting, it just "saves" forever and doesn't finish.

I believe that's just a rewording of the old setting that turned off its forwarding of all text messages to your SMS number. Not really new.

Outgoing text messages constantly hang in the queue. Watch out.

i wish the in app transcriptions were quicker to show. i get an email and/or sms with the VVM in about one minute, whereas the app takes up to hours to show. maybe this new version will fix that.

glad to have an update though, progress is always welcomed.

I want VOIP built into the app. Then we can all call it a day.

I hate the new icon. Why did it have to change? Now it just looks like messaging, and I didn't like that icon to begin with.
And I don't see any new UI for tablets except for 'click to call', which is nifty for finding my phone and such.

Weird. Google Voice has always loaded quickly for me, even back on stock Android 2.1 with my Sprint HTC Hero.

These look like some welcome improvements. Downloading now.

I loled so hard at the screenshots - can't believe they're the official ones from the app's description.

Hahah I did too. I thought it was David Ruddock's personal screenshots... I was going to say "No offense, but you might need new friends... They all are too... similiar."

One thing to notice is the click to call ;) Just set it to also call your Google Talk account at google.com/voice. :)

I don't need another way to send a text, I want a way to use my Google Voice to make and receive phone calls. Am I missing something?
