If you have an old Android phone laying around and want to gain a second phone line or have the incredible urge to make calls from your tablet (requires a Bluetooth headset), then GrooVe IP is no doubt the go-to app. For a limited time, you can save yourself a few bucks and score this app for $2.10 (normally $4.99) in the Android Market.

So, what is GrooVe IP? If you haven't already guessed, it's a VoIP (voice-over-IP) client, which allows you to make and receive calls using only Wi-Fi. One of the best features of Groove IP is that it works hand-in-hand with Google Voice, so you get an all around, 100% free (aside from the cost of the app) solution for a second phone line. Setup appears to be a snap, too.

Just bought it, thanks for sharing. I was hoping it would go on sale sometime soon.

Curious though if Google stops free calls in 2013 and beyond..that would render this app useless?

Btw it's 11pm EST and not 11 pm PST.

It would only make the "free calls" part useless. But if you use it on a device without a cell connection paying for minutes might be cheaper then getting a phone.

Well we got a whole year to use it. Well worth 2 bucks to call from my tablet all year. Still cheap 2.10 in amazon as now 2 am est.

appbrain still shows it at $4 but if you go to market it will show the $2 price.

  • cruzadous

sipdroid does the same for free.

The app will work on 3G/4G connections as well. I use it all the time and have yet to use any minutes. You need to set up Google Voice to forward to your Google Talk app to receive calls. The only time I use the WiFi for "local calls" is when I am deployed in Afghanistan. BTW, if you're using the 2-Step verification with Google, create a password for Groove IP and use that for the password when setting up your account.

Other than that, the program works flawlessly
