The guys behind the official Dropbox Android app have an enticing present for everyone to check out. They just released an experimental beta v2.0.9 that includes a brand new automatic Camera Upload feature. There are definitely third party apps out there that offer this same service, but it's nice to see the official version updating with some fresh new features.

Here's what you'll find:

  • The app can now automatically upload photos and videos in the background using Wi-Fi or your data plan.
  • No more size limit. So upload to your hearts content.
  • If there are network issues, the upload will resume when those issues are resolved.
  • Some performance improvements and bug fixes.
  • You'll also get 500MB of free space on your first automatic photo upload.

If you allow automatic uploads via your data plan, there is a setting to limit the file size to 25MB (files over this limit will wait for Wi-Fi) or set it to unlimited.

Unfortunately, there's currently no way to add and configure multiple sources and destinations like you can with DropSync, so there is definitely still some room for improvement.

But wait, that's not all! During the beta period you can rack up some more free storage. The first sync gives you an instant 500MB bump, and for every 500MB of photos and videos you upload automatically, you'll receive an additional 500MB of free storage, up to 4.5 more gigabytes. That's 5GB just to help test out the new Dropbox, all for free.

I should also mention that this free space isn't separate from any free space you may have earned from the desktop client beta they announced yesterday.

What are you waiting for? Click or scan the QR code below to grab the experimental release APK. Who knows how long the beta will last...

    Erm like Google+ ?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, but Google+ doesn't deliver it to your computers - I very rarely use Google+ to post pics, but use DropSync to sync photos to my laptop instantly and post, edit, back up, etc them that way.

      They're just... different in purpose.

      • cece

the real big problem with google+ is that it does not upload the original files. It uploads reduced quality versions (resized down).
So you still have to backup again all your pictures.

        • sriracha

not if you were G+ beta. i have unlimited unresized upload capabilities and storage from my phone. all viewable from Picasa web albums, and any associated software.

      • cece

@sriracha :"not if you were G+ beta. i have unlimited unresized upload capabilities and storage from my phone"

Do you mean you can upload full size via the automatic upload ? (not talking about posting some photos via G+)
And I thought full size pictures would anyway count in your storage capability (only <2000px are not limited)...?

        • sriracha

you are correct. because i was in G+ beta, GOOG allows me unaltered, full size photo uploads from my mobile. i am also granted unlimited space because my mobile uploaded photos do not exceed a certain size and therefore do not count against my limit. the size i am allowed to upload at is also greater than a normal G+ account because of my beta participation, slightly larger than my 8 MP camera will take..

this is the main reason i like G+ so much.

    • Jon Garrett

same service but NOT with 500mb of extra space (up to 5GB)

that alone is reason enough for me to use it.

  • Nyamka Ganni

    With love! :-D

    Good opportunity!

  • apatel

downloaded and installed on a Samsung Captivate running a Gingerbread based custom ROM and an Asus Transformer Prime...it crashes on the Captivate, but runs fine on the TP...still waiting on my free space!

  • gosa

Hate to ask a maybe stupid question here, but isn't it a good way of complicating things to download and install something "outside" of the Market?
Installing this file mean that I will loose the connection with Android Market, and with that Update notifications, right?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

No, it won't. The app package is still the same, and it's signed with the same key, so you'll keep your update notifications and Market link.

      • gosa

        Ok, perfect!
Thanks for a quick reply on that one
I installed it anyway, but your answer saves me the time of having to keep an eye on it...

(So far it seeems to be working quite well on the HTC Decire by the way)

  • http://www.miniphysics.com TheMini

Thanks for notifying! Downloading the apk and getting 500 MB. :)

  • Jim

Aw. I was like where is my instant 500MB!?!? Then realized that I grabbed the initial SD card sync photo/vid sync to dropbox space bump yesterday via beta desktop client. Oh well, still pretty cool. Seems to work great so far on my gnexus

  • GergS

Beta just froze my Galaxy Nexus... yikes.

First time this has happened since I've owned it.

    • Ted Lovejoy

No problem on my GN on Verizon. Got me some extra space - nice!

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Uninstall, reinstall, try again. It shouldn't freeze.

  • mel

so how often is it supposed to upload? I've been snapping away to see if it works still no upload. been 10 minutes

    • Bek

Do you use a 3rd party camera app, that puts your photos into a custom folder vs the default location?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

If you're low on battery, it won't upload either. Like <20-25%.

  • Angel

I still don't have my free space. I even uploaded all the images and videos i have on my phone (more than 500mb). I should be getting 1gb bump from Dropbox but still nothing...

    • xnifex

it has to be auto uploaded. you have to snap the picture & have it upload by itself. If you go & choose which files to upload it doesn't count.

  • dan330

after getting the beta.. can i use it with an existing account? and still get the additional free space..5GB??

    • Mark

Worked on my existing account, I had 3.0gb before and now it's 4.5gb, nice!

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Works fine on existing accounts. I'm up to 15.8GB already.

      • DCMAKER

do you keep the space after the beta?

  • Waazzupppp

Won't install on Rooted (stock but frozen apps) Evo4G - gets to installing app screen then finishes with "Application Not Installed".

Won't install on Stock Samsung Exhibit II 4G - same issue.

Won't install on Rooted Toshiba Thrive - same issue.

    Anyone have any thoughts?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Redownload the apk perhaps. It should install fine, unless your existing Dropbox is signed with a different key for some reason.

For the exact reason, download aLogCat from the Market, try to install Dropbox, then open aLogCat and see what exactly went wrong.

  • http://www.academia-nutcrackers.com Sven

I got the initial 500MB but nothing else for uploading my videos from my TF101 :( Is there anything that can be done wrong?

    • xnifex

it only counts for pics that were automatically uploaded right after you took them.

      • http://www.academia-nutcrackers.com Sven

Ah! Thanks! I am just wondering how many people take 500MB+ with their Android camera.... There's always a catch!

        • xnifex

I had it send all of my existing photos right away when it asked. I'm hoping that it counts that. had to stop (doing over data) because it's taking way too long & I'm at work. will let it start up again once on wifi & see if it gives me the extra 500mb

        • Karzdan

Works with HD videos you take as well. At 720p a 2.5 minute vid is over 100MB

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

That's not true at all. It's pics or movies.

I just copied a bunch of avi files into the Camera directory on the phone and woke up this morning with +4GB.

        • xnifex

but that was auto uploaded once you put them in your DCIM folder, right? Or did you open dropbox & choose to have them uploaded to the camera directory? if that's the case, I'm gonna do that too!

  • Ryan

I wonder if the camera uploads folder is public? I remember that was an issue with the photos folder being automatically public and all your pictures being visible with the right address.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It's not public. Only your Public folder should be public.

  • Tim

It didn't bump me up 500mb..

  • Richard

Didn't bump me with 500MB., said it gave me 250 MB. Going back to stable version.

  • Pegger

Works fine on my HTC Hero and HTC Wildfire (both have custom roms)

    I'm up to 5,75GB now :) (had 5.25GB before)

It's still synching my pictures with dropbox (around 600mb total (+300 pictures)) I never had a picture erased since i bought the phone a few years back, should come in handy now i think :D (We'll see after all is uploaded if i get more then the 500mb extra ;) )

  • Richard

Very good for me and my freind...

  • Pegger

works nice got an extra 500mb now cause i upped more then 500mb of pictures :) i'm on 6,25GB now :), gonna put up another few gigs of pictures on my TF :)

  • HK

This beta version keeps shutting down when I tried to upload...

  • Karzdan

Are we sure it's 5GB total? I've been stuck at an additional 4.5GB despite uploading over 600MB of videos. Still no additional 500MB bump to make it a full 5GB

  • RA

I never received more than 250MB, and I followed the instructions to the letter. Going back to Sugarsync. I had to remove everything I uploaded as I hit my limit.
    Total waste of time.

  • Ben

Worked fine for me. Auto-uploaded my whole photo/video library and got bumped from 5.5 to 7.5 GB. Nice :)
I got quite a few fc's in the beta but I trust them to sort that out by release of the official version.

i only got 500MB and have been uploading the whoel time and maxed out at 2.5g and deleted photos took a few from cell and fried again and just maxed

    • Ben Spencer

Ya me too whats up withe that?

  • Pegger

i'm up to 8,75GB now (comming from 5GB)
But i'm doing it the other way throu my PC to make it easier :) Just installed the forum beta on my windows pc, this has a new feature to upload pictures and movies when you connect a phone or camera or usb stick, you also get another 500mb extra for every 500mb you upload, (same rulez as on android beta, and no you don't get extra 5gig for using this android beta and then another 5 gig using the forum beta!)

  • Pegger

    10GB Dropbox space now :)
since i got it maxed out now, i think i can stop uploading pictures and video clips!

No need to upload 4GB of photos to your Dropbox account. Here’s a trick to get 5GB Of free Dropbox Storage Right Now – goo.gl/2v0ds

  • mug3n

works fine for me. the trick is to import it via autoplay and not drag it into your dropbox folder, that doesn't work. and i find that you can cancel the uploads midway - i didn't complete my entire 5gb video upload and i dumped the files off the camera folder and still got credited with the 4.5gb bump (in addition to the extra 500mb you get from uploading any picture)

  • alexander_q

Has anyone made it to 10GB? I got the 5GB via the desktop app, and I have since uploaded about 4GB worth of videos via the android app but have not received a bonus.

    • Brandon Lancaster

"I should also mention that this free space(from the Android app) isn't separate from any free space you may have earned from the desktop client beta they announced yesterday."

Uninstalled this after it was using ~1% battery per minute to scan file system for changes. Dropbox and 'Media' were chewing the power.

  • dropbox18gb

Hi, i can help you to expand your free dropbox storage to 2 x 32 GB, please see : goo.gl/IFz7l

  • Clint Foote

Im a first time drop box user. Tried to download just two short video clips to share but it is now downloading 500+ photos! Didn't tell it to do that. How do I stop that without deleting all my photos?
