Update: The link to the update is now working. Get on it!

Infuse 4G owners have been chomping at the bit for some Gingerbread love since the device's release in the middle of last year, and it seemed this morning they were finally going to get it. A moderator at the AT&T forums posted up the typical changelog marketing spiel, chocked full of customer benefits and exciting new fonts like 'Choco Cooky' and 'Cool Jazz' (I am not kidding).

Unfortunately, it seems AT&T neglected to inform Samsung that it was update go-time - the link to said update 404s. Whoops. Of course, if you have Samsung Kies installed, you should be able to check for updates using that. Forum users are reporting, though, that a manual check yields no Gingerbread love either at this point.

We'll update this post when AT&T and Samsung decide to, you know, fix that. In meantime, here's a changelog:

The upgrade to Android 2.3.6 for the Samsung Infuse 4G™ (i997) provides the following customer benefits and will be available starting February 1st:

  • Improved Copy and Paste functionality
  • Redesigned Multi Touch Software Keyboard
  • Download manager for long running HTTP downloads
  • Improved power management and application control
  • Notification Shade: “Flight Mode” added (“Silent” removed)

  • Keyboard Changes: Android Keyboard with Wider Spaced keys and Quick Keys at the top

*Note: The update will remove the promotional Angry Birds pre-load from the device. If you’ve started playing the game, you would need to re-download from the Marketplace and start from the beginning of the game.

Finally, hopefully there are still some devs interested in modding gingerbread.

Bah, what a complete waste of time! The device is nearly a year old now, and most everyone gave up on the official update by now and went to a custom ROM. What they SHOULD have been working on was an ICS update instead. I love sammy hardware, but wtf are they thinking?

  • stompsfrogs

"The Infuse 4G runs the latest Android operating system--OS 2.2 (aka, Froyo)"
    Sorry, what?
"Coming later in 2011, AT&T will deliver a second layer of 4G network called LTE (Long Term Evolution) that is even faster than HSPA+ speeds."
Which the Infuse 4G will be completely unable to take advantage of, given that it lacks an LTE chip. But we'll just go ahead and stick that in the description for the Infuse, yeah.

Time to sue AT&T yet? Marketing that deceptive is illegal, no?

    First, why no OTA? Weird.

Second, I think you missed the funniest part of this entire thing. This update is going to wipe out people's progress in Angry Birds. LMAO - people are going to FREAK OUT! This is going to be hilarious.

Glad I went to CM7 months ago. I knew it would take either forever or never for GB to show up.

The samsung link works now. Contains instructions on how to upgrade.

I'm a Samsung Infuse 4G (which I would really like to start calling the Infarct) owner who got all excited and tried to update. After fighting to find the Kies Mini software, and getting the driver properly installed, I received the "Unregistered Device" error message as well. The text chat with Samsung support was quite humorous, since they stated that Kies doesn't work with Windows 64bit and to "just install it (the software) on a 32bit version." After I quit laughing, I called Samsung support and found out that no, the software is fully compatible with 64bit windows, but the Kies server is glitching. They are working on it with AT&T (no clue how AT&T was drug into it) and hope to have the issue resolved by Monday, or so. The same support rep had a few strongly worded suggestions. First, uninstall the Kies Mini software. Second, DO NOT TRY TO UPGRADE UNTIL THEY RESOLVE THE ISSUES. Apparently the server may "succeed" in dropping out a file, which will apparently brick people's phones. Third, wait until Monday and call Samsung support back to verify that the issue is resolved. Otherwise, on the third suggestion, people should wait 1-2 weeks before trying again if they do not wish to call in.

    Is this Samsung's Edsel? Nova? . . . ?

Followed up with Samsung today, and it is a great/bad news situation. Great news, attempts to update will not brick the phone (apparently there was some initial concern over that happening as they were unaware what was causing the issue). So the rep I spoke with said to feel free to attempt an update to your hearts content. Bad news, while they have isolated the issue and it appears that it is programming malfunction, they have not remedied the issue as of yet. Just tried to update, and I'm still receiving the error message, so I can confirm that, as well as the version of Kies Mini that I downloaded and the update it received are the same as what I had previously had.

As for the issue, if you have a phone that is factory fresh, without updates, then you don't have an issue. But if you were a good little droider, and downloaded your maintenance updates, you're not going to be able to update.

While I discussed some of the options available with the rep (most of which I had seen covered in various places) to get around this, Samsung is pretty strongly pulling for users to just hang tight a little longer. So yes, you can get around the problem by effectively flashing it, or reversing the maintenance updates, Samsung says "Please, don't."

As a side note, I contacted AT&T this weekend and they are "unaware of any issue with updating the Infuse to Gingerbread."

As of Monday night here in Texas, am still getting msg :"Unregistered Device", and running 64bit, so with the new info about the Kies server glitch, I'll try again tomorrow...Thanks Joseph!

Lemme start off by saying I love my gingerbread. I got my phone no less rhan two days it had come out. I was very angry when there was no gingerbread and the more I waited the less I loved my phone. Now its like a whole new phone. No force closes, its amazingly quicker and its just all around awesome. Installing sucked since kies didn't respond but after waiting till night time it worked!

I was having the "unregistered device" issue. I talked to a Samsung rep and they said that Win7 64 bit isn't supported, and you have to use a 32 bit OS. A little archaic of them. I haven't tried that yet. Anyone report success with 32 bit v. 64 bit?

  • Godlovesugly

For the people that are getting the "unregistered device" error with the greyed out box, it's because we updated our phones with that small OTA update at&t sent out back in September-November. So basically, for those of us who did upgrade it like we were SUPPOSE to, this new firmware upgrade isn't cooperating with that previous update on Kies mini. Honestly, Ronald McDonald might as well be working with Samsung and at&t. The Samsung reps told me to factory reset my phone and hope it works, or "wait a couple days". I'm getting pretty agitated with this.

  • Salty Snacks

I have a 32 bit OS. No luck with an update. I did the OTA update a couple of months back and kies mini still states unregistered device. Has anyone in the U.S. actually had any success with this update yet (Not talking about custom ROM's)? How about some video or photos. Has anyone done a factory reset of the phone and had any success with this update?

  • Desi

No luck with 32 Bit or 64 Bit OS...Samsung and AT&T technical support teams are useless, wasted all my weekend on this futile efforts!

  • Desi

Please anyone let me know if you had any luck with the upgrade!

  • CrunchyCookie

No luck with update and I agree that neither Samsung or ATT know what their doing. Everyone likes to bitch about the iPhone but at least when it comes to their updates they got their act together. Yes I know what some are going to say there not perfect but at least iTunes works well and is more reliable than this garbage Kies Mini. Maybe I'll get a Windows Phone give them a try.

  • Mark

I updated it on the day it was released. Its pretty buggy and definitely slower than Froyo. Still undecided about battery life though... Oh, and THERE's NO ROOT AVAILABLE!!!

  • jesus r perez jr

you people need to get iphones.

  • Deepthroat

    @jesus

We would get iphones but the majority of us Android users aren't braindead sheep that crave things to be entry-level easy. We crave customization, versatility and a much larger boost to our performance and hardware. Iphone 4gs still sports a very low 1ghz single core while many higher-end android phones hit up to 1.5ghz dual core along with the ability to work with our operating systems without jailbreaking the damn thing. And this is just the tip of the iceberg - I can write all day about the shortcomings of apple's software and hardware. You can keep your iphone garbage. We want something more.

  • Peter53

    Upgraded today...no problems

    • Peter53

      Just an update....Upgraded through Kies...Windows 7 64-bit

  • Daddysgirl882011

OMG I did this update  and it has made my phone go insanily slower. when I hang up the phone it takes 10 seconds to go to home screen and the phone icon stays up at the top for 30 seconds. and when people call me i can hear my phone ringing but no option to answer. THIS UPDATE IS VERY BUGGY>>>oh and no root available.

    • rajeev kumar

I agree. it takes about 10secs to go to home screen after hang up the call. Is there a solution or we have to live with it?

  • bert

if i upgrade my infuse 4g i997 .. my network connection will be lost ? and i need to buy again the unlock code ?

  • Harshil Shah

Hi, I have a Sansung Infuse 4G At&t phone. However, it is a network unlocked phone and I am using it on a local GSM network. I have one concern over this. Will the gingerbread upgrade lock my phone to the At&t network again?
