When it comes to my Android devices' home screens, I'm fickle. It is rare that a wallpaper or layout will last more than a few days. That being said, I find that live wallpapers tend to have a much longer shelf life than their static counterparts, perhaps because they are – generally – so much more dynamic. Taking the concept of a truly dynamic LWP to another level entirely, Central Core Studios has introduced RadiantWalls HD – PlanetScapes to the Android Market, making your device "a window looking out onto the surface of the planet Avalon."

The wallpaper comes in two flavors – free and paid. The free version includes only the "Night at Avalon's Falls" vista, while the paid version (at a reasonable $1.49) adds two more stunning environments – "Day Within Avalon's Sunridge Canyon," and "Sunset Between Avalon's Frosty Northern Tundra." All of the environments are styled and rendered beautifully, bringing to life images that could easily stand alone as wallpapers themselves.

Besides bringing stunning HD landscapes to your device's display, PlanetScapes allows users to adjust certain environmental variables including falling leaf density, cloud speed, and whether the landscape includes waterfalls.

All in all, this is a great LWP, offering some truly beautiful visuals. One thing I would love to see, however, is the option for the wallpaper to cycle through vistas throughout the day, or perhaps the ability to enable day/night modes for each. Even without these features, though, PlanetScapes is certainly worth its $1.49 price tag. If you're not ready to commit to the purchase, just click through to the free version below.

    Looks... magical.

Seriously awesome live wallpapers. The devs are also working on some new ones with specific themes that are really sick as well..

Wahhhh! Not compatible with my Evo! Granted, I am running Deck's alpha5 build of ICS, but it's still unfortunate.

    • Rob

It's gotta be your ICS build. I just visited the Android Market page for that app and signed in. I'm showing the (free) version of the app is compatible with my EVO 4G running CM7.

I guess it is just me, but I never understood the "need" for eye candy wallpaper...especially on a hand device. It just sucks more memory, GPU & other processing power. My desktop & smart phone have a BLACK background. Boring, but, suits me.

That's just it, it suits you. I never understood anyone who have black bacgrounds and don't like a bit of personalization.

Too bad live wallpapers aren't GPU accelerated. With such a pretty wallpaper, it makes my Galaxy tab 10.1 lag like hell.

    • Terepin

Wait for ICS. Even my EVO 3D is lagging like hell.

      • Nick

It's even laggy on the GNex...but apparently they're aware of this

Strange. The free version of the live wallpaper from above works silky smooth on my EVO 3D.

I am rooted and S-OFF running a clean stock ROM though. Maybe that's why?

I am pretty sure most live wallpapers are GPU accelerated. They might just not have been designed with pushing as many pixels as your tablet has.

Another factor could be that Tegra 2 CPUs lack NEON support which could affect performance. Of course that is more on the CPU side than the GPU, but you never know. I just did a search of "Tegra 2 live wallpapers" and XDA has plenty of threads complaining about the performance. Hmm.

The free one looks fantastic on the Galaxy Nexus lockscreen. I'm not seeing any lag on it, BTW.

anyone fancy upping the apk please, can get dowload it on my S2 due to running ICS, thanks.

  • Sam

Awesome wallpapers, bought the app and am now using the Sunridge canyon one on my asus transformer prime :)

  • L boogie

Running this fantastic wallpaper on my g-tab 10.1 & my g-nex with no lag

Lol, planet Avalon...that's not a totally lame ass generic name -eyeroll-
