Not sure how we missed this one as it has been available for four days, but here we are. On Blackout Day. Telling you about the Wikipedia app. Ironic, no?

This is an app that many users have been waiting on for, well, a long time. Now you can quickly search Wikipedia's 20 million articles without ever having to open the browser. The app features the ability to save searched articles so you can read them later, searching articles based on nearby locations, and the option to share your findings.

The Wikipedia app is completely free, so hit the widget below and install it. Just don't use it until tomorrow.

I'll be sticking with Wapedia as it allows me to search other wikis that are out there instead of being a one trick dog.

There are some decent articles (about trivialities) outside Wikipedia, but it has, generally, the highest quality articles on important stuff (specially on science).

I use Wapedia to access wiktionary as well as several game wikis

Funny that the official app shows up as the 12th app when searching for "wikipedia" on my devices Market app. :)

And yes, I know that AP has direct links in the article. ;)

I've decided to try and stick to apps that use the Android 4.0 theme from now on, so this is a no go for me.

Better yet, install, give two star rating, email Dev your issues, remove if unresponsive

It's faster than Wapedia, but can't access more than one Wiki. If Wikia would come out with their own app, I might be able to justify juggling two, but not when Wapedia can do both Wikipedia and Wikia stuff.

Sorry, Wikimedia, a pass from me as well.

So far, so good. I have it on my Evo 3D but wonder if this is tablet optimized. Guess I'll find out when I get home.

    Hmmm....
Find the app, open it and search....

    or

Long press the search key and simply say what I am looking for - including the word wikipedia if necessary though almost everytime I do a search Wiki is in the top 5 results anyway.

I'll stick with voice search thanks.

Can anyone enlighten me as to why this app has the course and fine location permissions?

  • yuku

It feels not native, especially the web page (no orange highlight to indicate pressed links) and the Settings screen (uses non-standard PreferencesActivity).

Turns out that they use PhoneGap.

Finally! I've been waiting for this one for so long.
Now I need just need Instagram and Instapaper (yeah, the latter is never going to happen) to release Android versions, and there will no longer be any iOS apps that I want but can't get on Android.

Satisfactory, will be interesing to watch what they have in store for the future updates :)

I'm a bit dissapointed, it's only showing the mobile wikipedia page within a custom interface.

I was expecting to be able to enable it as a source in the search feature, but it's not there as a search provider.
