Update: Looks like it was a pricing error, as the listing has been pulled. Bummer, dude.
The tour de force Asus Transformer Prime (which I reviewed in early December and came away highly impressed by) is listed at HH Gregg for just $400 - that's both in store (if you can find it one available, anyway) and online, too. That may not seem like seem like a bargain for the uninitiated who are more accustomed to the $400 price tag of the original Transformer, but keep in mind that this is the newer, much sleeker, and much more powerful Tegra 3-touting Prime model, which normally retails for $500.

It's not quite clear whether this is a promotional or permanent price, thanks to the lack of any "Sale" designations on the product page, so it's entirely possible that it is a pricing error. Still, if you're in the market for an Android tablet, there isn't a better bet to be had at the moment, let alone at this price.

Need a rehash of the Prime's pack-leading specs? No problem:

  • 10.1-inch 1280x800 Super IPS + display with Gorilla Glass
  • 1.3GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 Processor with 12-core GPU (up to 1.4GHz in single-core mode)
  • 1GB RAM
  • microSD slot and microHDMI port (with support for 1080p video output) on tablet
  • SD card slot and USB port on dock
  • 8MP F2.4 rear shooter with 1080p video recording and continuous flash, 1.2MP front camera
  • 8.3mm thin, 263mm wide, 180.8mm tall, 586g (1.29 lbs)
  • 12 hour battery life playing 720p video, 18 hours with keyboard dock
  • Metallic spun finish
  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) update rolling out now

Wow, incredible price. Still doesn't have a 1920x1200 screen though.

  • Jim McP

I thought this model had all sorts of WIFI and GPS problems?? Please correct me if I'm wrong, I had an order with Amazon that I cancelled after hearing of the WIFI problems.

    • skinien

You are correct! I returned my Prime and picked up a Xoom. My prime had TERRIBLE wifi and the GPS was non-functional.

      • Aaron Gingrich

Never had any WiFi OR GPS issues with mine. I think it's more of a vocal minority problem, really.

        • Kenny O

Same here....both Wifi and GPS work fine. I have not tested using GPS without a Wifi signal as I would never have a need for that.
It's even more amazing now that they released ICS. I would not pay the extra $100 for a better screen resolution.

        • john

Gps does not work. You will not be able to stream video without without buffering issues due to the weak wifi reception. All of this is caused by having an all metal back without any plastic for the antennas to transmit and receive through. That is why the upcoming prime tablet does not have an all metal back. Also cannot stream wifi and bluetooth at the same time.

Stay away from this version. Wait for the fixed version.

        • Noct

if you guys are having so many problems with the metal back just mod it

My guess is that ASUS wants to get rid of this model and will fully replace it with the TF700T

  • AppleFUD

I expect the TPrime's price to drop rather quickly due to
    1. the known design flaw
    2. higher res tablets hitting the market soon.
    3. the plethora of cheap tablets available

  • Andrew

That online shop is down. Yep, everyone's rushing there.

  • G

Why's everyone going on about the 1080p high res tablets? I remember having that resolution on my 17" laptop a few years ago and everything looks TINY - I can't imagine reading or doing anything comfortably on a device with a 10" screen and 1080p - unless there's some sort of sharp scaling that I don't know about.

    • plasmoidia

That's because Windows is horrible at handling high DPI devices. If done correctly, there is little correlation between display size and content size (except that lower res displays have limits to how small things can be made). Android should handle it fine, resulting in much more detail and crispness.

  • Chris

Just bought mine, thanks for the info

  • Ryan S

Coworker just ordered his in-store and will be driving down after work to pick it up. I already have the original so it will be nice to see a back-to-back and the ICS update.

  • Ryan S

Co-worker just ordered his in-store and will be driving down after work to pick it up. I already have the original so it will be nice to see a back-to-back and the ICS update.

  • Spydie

I have one, no GPS or wifi problem. I don't think very many people actually had trouble with those two things. But half a dozen people plagued all the forums until everyone thought it was a problem. Keep in mind, while the new TF700 may replace the Prime (Asus says NO), it's also a hundred dollars higher, and like the ipad, the price won't drop, while the Prime price MAY drop. You'll never notice the difference between a a1280 and 1920 resolution, either.

  • Uberjorgen

Be happy you can ever dream of price dropping even lower than 400$, I'll have do dish out about 840$ for the same thing here in norway. Which honestly isn't that bad compared to a low-budget laptop.

  • Steve

After punching in a few zip codes on the HHGregg web site, seems that it's only available for store delivery in the Northeast US. Most of the other zip codes I tried showed ship to home as only option. Kenny O: Just wondering why you say you would never have a need to use GPS without WiFi, something like driving ever occur to you as a use of GPS without WiFi? I almost jumped on this, but I am glad that it's been scarce in stores around Kentucky. It makes sense that they would start dumping this model after the TF700 was introduced at CES.

    • Kenny O

Yes, you would definitely need GPS to work without Wifi if you were driving, and that ability might be very important to someone......just not to me as I use my cell phone for GPS and since I also use my cell as a hot spot for the tablet there is little to no chance of me having the tablet somewhere without my cell phone.

  • Steve

Noticed that HHGregg also is selling the orginal TF101A1 16GB version for $479. Wonder how many takers they'll get on that deal.

    • Kenny O

      lol......probably not many

  • Ken

More like anti-deal alert. I clicked Add To Cart and it popped up saying "Error, this product cannot be purchased at this time." Nice job getting my hopes up AndroidPolice....

  • Kenny O

Yeah, I just tried to order one and got the same issue.....Probably a pricing error like the article suggests. Wonder if they are honoring the price for anyone that got the order through.

  • ZM

I snagged mine since i'm here on the east coast and had it delivered to the store. I sure hope this is a pricing error and not a ASUS dumping or even worse a breach in website security. This seems way to good to be true.

  • bob

Might as well be priced for 5 bucks.. it's out of stock which means no deal

  • Steve

Yep, price back up to $499 on the web site now and OUT OF STOCK listed under that. Don't worry, it will happen, just hope the price is lower than $399 with all it's problems.

  • Chris Belanger

Does anyone know what they are doing for the people who managed to place an order?

    • http://profiles.google.com/ISantop Ian

I had the proper amount deducted from my account. I haven't heard that they won't honor it yet, but then it's only been a few hours.

  • Chris Belanger

Does anyone know what they are doing for the people who managed to place an order?

  • Sportsguy

I actually saw it out of stock before the price increase, drove to my local HHgregg and was able to snag the ONLY one they had, for $399

    EXTREMELY lucky!

  • Darren

Yeah went during lunch had no idea it was that cheap. But the honored the price instore 413 after tax and away I went. there was only one left in so I am happy camper.

  • Mike

I was just checking around hoping that there'd be some in stores. Since the big ics update. And stumbled across the hhgregg deal. I jumped on it and paid 430 after tax and picked it up in the store today. Crazy lucky I guess. I have 0 issues with the wifi (haven't tried gps yet) I don't see any difference with ics? I guess I don't get what the big deal is, looks the same. System is super fast, but wouldn't that be all the new hardware.

  • Chris Belanger

I don't know if anyone is still following these comments at all, but even with express shipping my order still shows as processing, my card has been charged and they aren't responding to my customer service inquiries.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ISantop Ian

You mean they aren't answering the phone, or they don't know what's going on with your ticket? Try calling 1-866-974-7344. Select English, then give them your order number. They should be able to give you more info.

Mine did ship and is now sitting at the local UPS hub waiting to be delivered tomorrow.

      • Chris Belanger

I did finally get ahold of them - they ignored my emails but I got through on the phone. They told me they oversold, but are shipping them as they get more. They also told me that if it didn't ship by Thursday (1/19) it would ship this week. Here's hoping.
