Owners of the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint may find themselves hitting the install button on an OTA update today. The update brings a few minor tweaks to the device:

  • Updated Peep client (to align with Twitter)
  • Battery life improvements
  • Security update

It began rolling out earlier today and should hit all devices over the next five days.

To see if it's available on your device, hit Settings > System Update > HTC Software Update > Check Now.

Excellent !!! Real really better battery life

  • Joe C

This would be cool except I'm rooted so I already have battery improvements with the ROM I'm using.

This is cool period. Not everyone has that ROM.

How about GSM E3D? It feels like unwanted child compared to Sprint E3D.

    • Eric

      yea.. GSM carrier here
Didn't go with E3D by lack of the support and community :/

    • Circs

The Sprint E3D is quite the unwanted child by itself, but having the "weird" version of it probably makes the situation even worse.

& I guess this OTA might break my root if I apply.. correct?

    • Morenicano

Just to play it safe it's probably best to wait for the rooted version of the update to appear before updating. "Security update" is usually tricky to play around with when ur rooted.

      • AshR

        Thanks --- thought so!

You could try using Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to temporarily unroot your device, update, and root it back. Preventing OTA updates from removing root is precisely what this app was made for.

    what does rooted mean?

What about ICS update for E3d????

    • squiddy20

Dude, ICS source code was released only 2 months ago. They're not gonna have an OS update for any phone on any carrier for at least another month. It takes time to port the software, work out the bugs, send it to the carrier for testing, back to the manufacturer to work out any final bugs, and then maybe it gets released. Lots and lots of time.

      • Joseph

Oh, oh, oh, you forgot "add the carrier bloatware and data logging software"

  • AshR

Just heard that this update removes the CIQ stuff completely from E3D!!!

Sprint, I love you more!! :)

  • Mike

It appears to be a bait and switch with CIQ. It's gone now, but something looks like it's taken its place: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21368609&postcount=78

The folks at XDA are already delving into what it is so probably by the end of the weekend we'll know what this "Smith" item is that was added with this update (it's running in Running Applications, as well as the newly added QXDM2SD application. The latter cannot be force stopped either....).

AFTER THE UPDATE BATTERY LIFE IS AWESOME!!!

My phone shuts off on it's own and then I have to disassemble my otterbox and pull the back cover off and remove the battery and then put it all back together again. This can happen everyone I go to use me three week old phone. I called sprint and all they will do is send me a refurbishished replacement phone. I tried to explain to them that 7 days ago I just had a ankle replacement and am not able to just jump in my car and go to sprint. I was told that these phones are on back order. So if I need immediate medical attention and can't call 911 because I would have to take the phone apart, then so be it. What a caring company after being with them for over ten years. Any suggestions out there?

    • Circs

When I was with T-mobile they would do advanced replacements (send the new phone out and let you ship yours back in the box the new one came in) if you just asked nicely. Things may have changed... they seem to have become much less customer friendly lately.
