Update: For anyone who can't install this because of geographical limitations, here is the apk for manual installation -- make sure to drop your results in the comments. Enjoy! Thanks, Nick!

Earlier today, popular voice recognition software corporation Nuance launched Dragon Go! by Nuance on the Android Market, bringing voice recognition that "just works" to the Android platform. Dragon Go! answers the users' queries by pulling data from a variety of sources, including Spotify, Wolfram|Alpha, Yelp, YouTube, AccuWeather, Ask.com, Dictionary.com, ESPN, Facebook, Fandango, Last.fm, LiveNation, Milo.com, OpenTable, Pandora, Rotten Tomatoes, Twitter, Wikipedia, Yahoo!, Bing, and hundreds of others. Additionally, Dragon Go's "Dragon Carousel" software provides users with complementary results to compare information across the most relevant sites for their query.

dragon1 dragon2 dragon3 dragon4 dragon5

Some of you may be scratching your heads and wondering how Dragon Go! differentiates itself from popular competitors such as Vlingo. Well, for starters Vlingo was recently acquired by Nuance, so there is a good chance that the Vlingo Virtual Assistant app may be pulled from the Market and rolled into Dragon Go! Secondly, Nuance has been a leader in voice recognition for some time and it has been argued that most of the recent improvements in speech recognition accuracy is due to more and better data, rather than algorithmic improvements. Hence, Nuance's lead has allowed it to accumulate vast stores of speech data that should ensure that its answers are much more accurate than the competition.

Finally, unlike its competitors, Dragon Go! seems to work more naturally by accepting a wide variety of queries and also by launching specific apps and websites when appropriate. For example, the question "What are the planes flying overhead?" would be answered by pulling flight information data from Wolfram|Alpha. Similarly, the question "Show times for Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" will pull information directly from Fandango.com featuring showtimes for local theatres. Film information is further enhanced by comparison data from IMDB, Twitter, and Rotten Tomatoes, displayed by the Dragon Carousel software.

Reviews of the app all seem quite favourable with users commenting that it actually understands what they want rather than merely being a search engine powered by speech.

Unlike other Nuance voice recognition software, Dragon Go! is completely free and works on Android 2.1 through 2.3.7 using the native Android Media Player. According to the app description, support for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is "on its way". Unfortunately, the app is country limited and does not appear to work in Singapore. It seems that because the queries are often specific to a particular locale, international support may not be available yet.

  • Himmat

I can't get it in Malaysia as well. Hopefully some good soul here can post the .apk.

  • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I tried grabbing the APK, but I think they used the deprecated copy-protection, which prevents me from grabbing it easily.

  • http://edgar.meij.pro/ Edgar

<50 downloads, seriously? I can't install it either (in NL), so perhaps it's better to reverse the question: where *can* it be installed? US only?

    • http://www.androidpolice.com Abhiroop

Seems to be US only at this point!

  • Reverend D

Works just fine on my Galaxy Nexus... I wonder how well it will work when they finally support it for 4.0?

  • BobbyBandana

Bah. Same with Danish market. I am so tired of Amazon "app of the day" and what not apps which aren't available. I've more or less quit following up on app info from android police.

  • jeff

says device not supported on a gs2 and gt10.1. ridiculous.

    • Chris

It said the same for me when I tried to install on my Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 from the app market, but when I installed it manually from the updated link at the top of the post, I had no trouble getting it to work. Awesome app. Now if I can only get it to dial skype, since this is not a phone...

    • VonLaserface

Thank you! It doesn't show in the market on my Sprint GSII but it runs just fine.

      • Nick

Yeah, it wouldn't show on my SGS2 either, so I installed it from market.android.com.

    • http://google.com JR

      Thankyou For The APK :)

    • Al McDowall

Thanks very much Nick, my heart sank when I saw the 'country limited' remark - then soared again when I saw you'd made the APK available. Most services won't work for me here in China (Facebook, IMDB, Twitter all blocked) but great to have the chance to try it out anyway.

      Many many thanks.

    • Abhi

Thanks a lot! works fine on desire hd.

    • http://www.miniphysics.com TheMini

And there's still market enabler if you're rooted and outside US... You can buy stuff in more and more countries through Market, but ME is still one of the most useful applications.

    • Moi Poi

      Market Enabler is a must!

    • http://www.firstdove.com Christian

Hmm... I tried Market Enabler and it hasn't worked for me. It seems to work for some apps but not all. Doesn't even appear in the Market in my case.

  • Joshua

Working fine for me - better than I expected, actually. (LTE Galaxy Nexus)

  • easye420

This work great on my nexus s with 4.0.3. Well I wouldn't say great its a little slow. But it works!!!!

  • mrsimps

I couldn't find it under "Dragon Go," but when I searched using the name "Nuance," I found it; it was a few entries down the list, but it was there. HTC EVO 3D; U.S.

  • http://sneakily1.com sneakily1

Can't download due to lack of support on HTC EVO 4g and Acer Iconia a500 (in US)

  • OFI

arrrgh why do devs insist on releasing apps with these stupid location limitations when it works just fine elsewhere.

THANK YOU to the person who posted the apk

  • Melvin

    Can't install it on Galaxy S2 i777.

  • NuLL.n.Void

I'm in the US but it says that it's compatible for my OG Droid but not not my Bionic? WTF???

  • Choda Boy

    From here: http://www.nuancemobilelife.com/support/USA/engusa/dragongoandroid/system-requirements-installation
"What Android devices have been certified as working with Dragon Go?
Nuance has certified the Samsung Galaxy SII, Samsung Nexus S, Motorola Droid X, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC MyTouch4G, and the Motorola Droid 3. We have established that devices which do not leverage the Android native media player have trouble playing locally stored media. From our certified list, this includes the HTC MyTouch4G and the Samsung Galaxy SII."
Certified = works? Or Certified = tested?
Android Market won't let Galaxy SII install the app.

Still doesn't recognise my accent.... but the iPhone does, I have no idea why but it's the only thing that can accurately pick up my speech :/ I think it even uses the same engine :/

  • Martin Tohill

"What is Pimical software" Failed. It couldn't figure out what Pimical software was. Probably not a fair test.

Next I tried, "Movie times for Puss n' boots" It gave me Fandango showing local movies but thought I was searching for "Person boots".

  • Amar

Tried it out on Galaxy Tab 10.1 (thanks for apk file). Works but nothing special.

  • BobbyPhoenix

Anybody know where you are to enter the numbers you get when adding Twitter? After allowing Twitter, it gave me a couple of numbers (like a 9 digit code), and said to go back to the app, and enter them, but there is no place to enter them, and my Twitter box is now checked. Help!! Please. :-)

  • Nathaniel

    Terrible acting in the video

  • Owen Finn

Can't send text or email using this? Not worth it.

  • Simon Belmont

Haha. The guy in that video reminded me of James Franco.

Anyway, I guess I'll give this a try. I'm looking forward to Google's Siri contender, a.k.a. Majel.

  • The Tick

"Reviews of the app all seem quite favourable" when i DL it today on my GNex there were only 1000 DL so far... its not fantastic. still needs some work. But FAR better than Iris.

  • wase4711

speaktoit assistant works a lot better and actually talks back to you, ala Siri..
