Popular video sharing service Vimeo has finally launched its official Android app today. The new app has included all the important features found in the web version, including the ability to browse, watch, download, and upload videos onto Vimeo.

Upon starting the app, the user is shown a 3x3 grid of options for creating, uploading, watching, and sharing videos. While not a requirement, creating a Vimeo account and logging into the service also allows the user to comment on, "like", and subscribe to videos, as well as save them to the "Watch Later" list.

Some of the other features of the app include:

  • Upload raw footage or previously edited creations in HD or SD
  • Pause/resume uploads and get reminded when a video is paused
  • Replace existing videos
  • Edit titles, descriptions, tags, privacy settings, and credits
  • Share videos via Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress, Email, and SMS
  • Watch and manage all Vimeo videos and download them to camera roll
  • Watch videos from your Vimeo Inbox, Watch Later queue, and videos you like"
  • Easily like videos, comment on videos, and add videos to your Watch Later queue
  • Discover new and interesting videos curated by Vimeo Staff
  • Add videos to Groups, Channels, and Albums
  • Access stats on daily plays, likes, and comments

Although the app has received some favourable reviews, the overwhelming majority are 1-star. Users complain of a variety of issues with the app, from videos not loading, to "timestamp errors". So, while the app certainly sounds promising, we would caution not to get your hopes up until a follow-up bug-fixer is released.

The app is free and works on any device running Android 2.3 Gingerbread or higher. Head over to the Android Market or the Amazon Appstore to download it now.

You should also note that it only runs on 2.3.7 or higher. That just kills it for tons of phones, including my Bionic which is back on 2.3.4.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

That's actually a bug with the Market - it sometimes shows 2.3.7 while the app is available for lower versions too. I just installed it fine on 2.3.6, and Appbrain shows it compatible with 2.1+ :S

Your Bionic may have a different compatibility issue, I'm not sure.

    • Syd

Ya I just loaded it up on my Atrix with 2.3.4. Maybe snag the apk and sideload it and give it a try?

On another note this is a nice expansion for Vimeo! I love that they keep the fullscreen player in line with what the website uses. Also I can see myself burning quite a few GB with this app watching alot of the videos.

  • Sam

I have no problem to play the videos on my Desire HD running Android 2.3.5 (the HTC Sense Rom)

  • Chuong

and lack of HD streams for the tablet. wtf?!
