Update 12/22: The game is now on sale for $2.99 (40% off) until 12/29. If you're not sure whether it's worth three bucks, check out our review, then hit the link below to buy.

Rockstar Games' infamous GTA franchise has reached the Android Market, right on the dot and as promised - the game is available in the Android Market right now. To my pleasant surprise, despite rumors of Samsung Galaxy S II incompatibility, the listing shows it as installable to my Epic 4G Touch SGSII just fine. Yay!

So, what are you waiting for? Those hookers and drug dealers aren't going to beat themselves up, are they? Grab $5 and proceed to the widgets below.

It seems like Rockstar Games also went a little nuts and released country-specific versions (there are better ways of doing this, guys). I found three more so far:

Thanks, Calvin!

Eek... Market says it's compatible with ZTE Blade, but not with Desire Z, weird O.o

    • razorhail

thats because they tested it on the Desire Z,and saw it didnt work fluently....
...so they manually disabled it for that device

they prolly didnt give a shit about the blade ;)

      • ufoman

This is piracy promotion at its best, if you're right... Xperia Play is only faster by 200MHz, and Desire Z overclocks like crazy... GPU is the same, amount of RAM too - I hope this is rectified soon and the game will be available.

        • Barton

What are you guys talking about? It says it's compatible with my Desire Z. Stock, latest official Gingerbread ROM (v2.42.405.2).

  • Reeve

Just bought it. lets see if it works properly!

  • John Ehret

Not compatible with the HTC Amaze 4G!? :-(

  • Calbino

Runs a bit choppy on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stock rom, 15-25 fps.

    Still fun to play.

    • DKE

It runs smooth on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 stock rom.

  • SarcasticOne

doesnt work on galaxy nexus :(

  • OFI

Whoa says it's supported on Desire O_( original supported less suggested only a small few of the latest phones would work.

Hmm kind of expected it for a game like this but 431MB download and the refund time slot goes out of the window.

  • Reeve

Works awesome on the SGS II!!

Wow cannot stop playing! Total Recall to old GTA days!! :D

  • Jakob

Won't continue anywhere after downloading additional files. Seems stuck on a black screen.

Running international SGSII on CM7 nightlybuild #115

  • Gary Hicks

Not available in my country? I live in the U.S.!

  • Matt

Country specific is probably to comply with that regions' content rating boards. Violent games tend to be heavily edited so that they can be sold in those 3 regions.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Sure, but there's a way to do this with just one listing in the Market publishing interface.

  • Birch

Think ill wait for better ICS support.

  • http://www.pretentiousname.com Leo Davidson

Doesn't work on my Nexus S. After playing the opening credits the screen goes black for a few seconds, then I'm dumped back at the launcher.

Hopefully they'll iron this out soon, though. I love the game enough to wait instead of chasing a refund.

One weird thing is the Market website shows the same publisher has released several variations of the same game:

    Grand Theft Auto III
    Grand Theft Auto 3
    GTA 3

All but the first one are flagged incompatible with the Nexus S, and the first one costs 2p more.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I already included them and explained what they are.

      • http://www.pretentiousname.com Leo Davidson

        Ah, okay.

I didn't realise that I'd be able to see the other region's versions when I look at the website from the UK (I assumed they'd be hidden from me), nor that they'd all have different names.

The article calls them all "GTA 3 ", so I didn't twig that what's mentioned in the article was what I saw on Market.

        Makes sense now, thanks.

  • http://facebook.com/smsmycarandme Force

Lol, it says it would be compatible with my HTC Magic xD

    • ufoman

Yea, it looks like they've made a couple mistakes selecting compatible devices ;D

  • Finaldeath

Bout dam time someone releases a REAL game that supports the sony tablet s, was starting to regret buying this thing over a xoom or galaxy tab. Very tempted to buy this.

  • Logan

463MB download after installation... just a heads-up for you guys.

  • edd

Beautifully translated and working great on my UK SII, thanks Rockstar!!

However, AP, please can you keep still hammering Google over the 15-minute refund window? It doesn't bother me with this game, as GTA and Rockstar have a sterling reputation, but it's pointless for games which require big data-downloads before you can even check to see how it runs on your device.

I purchase a lot less apps due to this window. It forces you into a panic decision rather than the fun of an impulse shop.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

We've hammered them enough (I ask every time I see a Google engineer), but they're adamant about this.

      • edd

:) Keep up the good fight!

  • Mike

Works great on the ASUS Transformer if anyone is interested ^_^

Brings back memories. First thing i did was get that Banshee on display on that auto shop. Best car in the game lol

  • Darknight42020

Runs perfect and great on my SGSII (TMO) with Juggernaut (Team KANG) ROM

  • Minko

Works great on the HTC Sensation... I feel like I'm in my teens again!

  • Shane

Keeps telling me it can't download the data and some shit about having an active internet connection. Cool.

    • Abel

I keep getting the same error, while my internet connection is perfectly fine. :S

      • Vala

        me too.any solutions?

  • http://www.google.com Marlon

Wow it says its compatible with my galaxy ace! I buyed gta 3 and it works well! It lags a bit but it runs well! It looks like they support hvga screens!

  • Kenneth

Why the hell is it compatible with the Droid 1, Droid X, Droid Charge but not the Bionic?

  • Shad0wguy

Surprisingly it is available for my HP touchpad running CM7.

  • OFI

Almost a 50:50 ratio of 1 star to 5 star reviews on the Market. Google really need to crack down on compatibility and the stupid refund Window.
From first day sales alone from the people who have reviewed the game that's £1000 profit from people who cant even play it.

How can that possibly be right?

  • Ken

So... the game crapped out on my GT 10.1 during the loading for the new game. I uninstalled and then went to reinstall and the market now says the device is incompatible. This, after it showed it as compatible and took my $5 for the game. Funny how it downloaded fine last night and works right up until I start a game. Lame Rockstar, lame.

  • Zach

    Game of the YEAR !

  • taylord

Any way to eventually get it onto non compatible phones? Like the GNex?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

The latest update already supports the GNex.

      • taylord

        oh ok. cool beans.

  • kik

To people with desire z, it runs great when your on a stock aosp rom but when on sense it is just framdrops all over the place.

  • Patrick

Does it work for Xperia GO? Cause when I was downloading the files it was downloading fine than it just stopped and said make sure u have active internet connection, and I had perfect connection

  • Patrick

I downloaded gta3 on my xperia Go and when I start to download the files to play the game it stopped half way through and said please make sure u have active internet connection and I had perfect internet connection?
