Although it wasn't among the select few HTC devices confirmed to be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich, we have reasons to believe that T-Mobile's myTouch 4G will indeed be receiving the update in early 2012, according to an HTC customer support representative. Here's the original message:

First I want to thank you for the amazing job you've done building and maintaining my phone.  It's my favorite phone I've ever owned by far.  I'm incredibly excited for android 4.0 (Ice cream sandwich) and am really hoping for the update to come to the T-mobile mytouch 4g.  I absolutely love the phone and don't want to replace it with another.  I'm emailing to request that the T-mobile mytouch 4g be put on the forefront of update candidates.  Thank you again.

And HTC's response (we redacted the names of the parties involved):

"Thanks for your interest in the update to Ice Cream Sandwich for your device. At this time the only information we can provide is that we have committed to bring Android Ice Cream Sandwich build to your device in early in 2012. We will be posting more details as soon as they are available on our forums and other web sites like Facebook.

Now, there's a good chance that this rep is simply misinformed - as we know, HTC has not committed to brining Ice Cream Sandwich to the myTouch 4G, this is the first we're hearing of it. But if it does turn out to be true, then myTouch 4G owners are in for a sweet surprise, and owners of other last-gen devices may just have reason to hope for ICS after all.

Update: A follow-up by the CSR seems to indicate that she was confused after all (what a surprise)... aaaand now we're back to zero.

Thanks, Justin!

I can honestly say the HTC MyTouch 4G aka Glacier is one of the higher end Android phones out there launched last year, and still is pretty strong today hardware wise. I see no reason that this phone SHOULDNT or COULDNT be updated.

On a little side note if HTC or T-Mobile reps are reading this, I can guarantee I will NOT buy another HTC device if they cant update this phone. I will also dump T-Mobile if they wanna sell high end phones that have a shelf life of 12 months.

It's a year old phone with a "customized" android UI? Has such a phone (on any carrier) _ever_ received a major Android update? I can't recall any.

You can dump T-Mobile if (when) they don't provide ICS for the MyTouch 4G (or even the Google UI'd G2) but don't expect that particular grass to be greener at any other carrier.

Our family as two MT4G and one G2, we are going to be fine ICS wise thanks to CyanogenMOD.

Good idea. Tmo is getting better with the updates. The last round was good because they released over the air which was slow and at the stores with microsd card (which i used). I suspect tmo will look into it. I love them as a carrier and will stick with them. If not Cyanogen will do me good as well

wow buddy you fail to understand things here....just because you will not get the update does not mean your phone is crap....gingerbread is just as good as ics, why are you mad at the fact your not going to get an update? very silly, you sound like someone pissed in your cornflakes... in my opinion any htc phone with a dual core will get this update.... good luck with dumping Tmo and opting out of your contract....

I know people wont agree with me. This is my experience with HTC. I have a HTC Desire. When HTC release sense 2.1, the customer support said that my phone will also be updated. That didn't happen. Than they said HTC desire and above all phones will get gingerbread. After some scolding and shouting, gingerbread came to desire but with so many limitation. I know desire have small ROM. But phone like wildfire s and all has same amount of ram/rom and worse processor, still can sun gingerberbread with sense 2.1 so why cant desire. Its old story guys, but this clearly show that HTC only interest about the new line of product. Just hope myTouch 2 or something like that dont come out. If not you guys also might have the same faith.

Wildfire S has a next gen Snapdragon CPU, actually.. Overclock it and they might perform the same.

What a joke are these Android updates. I bought myTouch 4G earlier this summer, fully expecting the 2.3 update from the buggy 2.2.

Many months later, and although the 2.3 update binary itself has long as been mastered out and completed, it is still not available for any customer to download through any official source.

Where's my 2.3? Why is my mT4G still running 2.2? The device has great specs, but the software has way too many bugs and glitches.

You can get the T-Mobile official G-Bread 2.3.4 through the XDA forums. I did it on my wife's MT4G and it's running flawlessly. Her phone was not rooted either. Here's a link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264704

What was so buggy about 2.2.1 on the phone, I had no problems with that build on my phone, what bugs did you experience? There should be no problem getting ICS on the mytouch 4G as long as they keep it vanilla android and non of this mysense crap that makes android so much heavier.

    1) the Glacier is still considered a somewhat high-end device, even being a year old. Performance-wise, it's pretty much on par with the Nexus S, even though the CPU is a generation older. This is coming from first hand experience as an owner of both these devices.

    2) ROM's ported from devices such as the Sensation and Sensation XL run amazingly well on the myTouch. I see no reason why ICS would be a problem, especially considering how AOSP ROM's completely out-perform any Sense ROM (but I do realize HTC would never release an AOSP for this device)

    3) CM9 was already recently ported, and while there are several bugs to sort out (hw acceleration, wifi, bt, etc.) its looking quite promising so far. Even if that's all we get, it's ICS nonetheless.

    4) It would be nice to see Sense 4 on the Glacier, but if HTC wants to leave it to the third-party devs, that's fine with me. Either way though, a fast and stable ICS is definitely coming.

The myTouch 4G is probably still in the top 5 of all Android phones, power-wise. Even though it has a single-core processor at 1Ghz, that's still pretty good. Most phones still only have 512MB of RAM and the myTouch 4G has 768MB. The newest phone (Galaxy Nexus) only has one step up to 1GB of RAM. The myTouch 4G could definitely run ICS if HTC would get over this mySense crap.

I so agree, it brakes accessibility for those who have a visual impairment, not to mention, when the htc my touch 4G is temp rooted it flies.
