A few weeks ago, we launched what ended up being my favorite creative Android Police contest to date - the wallpaper design contest. With over 250 submissions, it took me a little while to sort through everything and pick out the two winners, the top 25 runners-up, and even one hilarious entry that we absolutely had to include.

As promised, the first place entry will receive a 16GB Sony Tablet S, and the second one will get the Philips Fidelio AS851 that we reviewed earlier.

For a history of creative contests, see these posts:

Note to runners-up: Because we had so many excellent submissions but only two prizes, we decided that all runners-up should receive at least something for their efforts. Therefore, designers of all runner-up entries who didn't win the grand prizes will receive Android Police t-shirts of their choosing from our apparel store - just send an email to giveaways@ap from the same email address you used to enter. Include the exact link to the shirt you want, color and size, along with your address and phone number (note: we can only send shirts to Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea (Republic), Luxemburg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States).

And now, the 2 amazing winners and 25 runners-up - bravo, guys, you've really outdone yourselves!

Which ones are your favorites?

    Congrats guys :)

  • Jason

#1 runnerup got robbed. His was the best.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

He was really good, and it was very tough to decide, and I encourage you guys to check out the entries full-screen rather than just looking at thumbs, as a lot more fine details otherwise not visible come out. I wish we could give everyone grand prizes...

    • Nastybutler77

I completely agree. That one was much better then the 2nd place winner, IMHO.

    • RajivK

Another vote for the #1 runnerup, great looking wallpaper

    • Jon Garrett

2nd place and #2 were the best.

    • JPG2963

I totally agree, this should've won the contest hands down! Yes the others were good - matter of fact - they were/are great.

RU #1, U da winner man. Perhaps I could ask you to make a cool wallpaper for my Samsung Galaxy Note - whatta ya think? I was hoping for something like the booanimation logo or just the simple Samsung Logo immersed in their (Sammy) distinctive Dark (Navy) Blue background.

I'm willing to pay you a reasonable fee too! If you'd consider doing it I'd need it in 1280x800 for my GT-N7000 and my Asus Transformer please. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

  • William D

For The Lulz is the best one :)

When I saw the Audi Android Police one, I had put my money that one would win.

Good job all of you. These are great.

  • Simon Belmont

Haha, the last one was hilarious. The Apple in the jail.

    Well done, everyone. Good work.

  • abhinav

The 2nd place's was really awesome IMO

    • http://mobro.co/TeamMustachio MetalMessiah78

I have to agree. The 2nd place winner was the best and should have won. I was going to make an analogy to Jeb Bush and Florida, but decided against it.

  • Tommy

    Congrats to the winners!!

  • abhinav

"herefore, designers of all entries who didn't win the grand prizes will receive Android Police t-shirts of their choosing from our apparel store "
would like a clarification on the above.
is this applicable to only the 25 runners up entry or to all those who submitted an entry ?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Sorry, these consolation prizes are for runners-up only. Clarified that now.

      • abhinav

        thought so ;) :D

  • ryandigweed

Quite Disssapointing. I thought Number 11 or 14 would win.. :( had my hopes on them.. :( Poor guys..

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It was the toughest contest to judge I've ever had to deal with. Can't please everyone, unfortunately.

    • http://gplus.to/attilacsapo Attila Csapo

I'm sure there will be other design contests, maybe not this year, but still ^^ We'll be back... with a blast :D

  • Tommy

I think the giveaway email may be incorrect, I got a delivery error...

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Did you actually email giveaways@ap? I didn't want the spam spiders to harvest it - just replace ap with our domain name :P

      • Tommy

no, I sent it to ap.com hahah

  • Gary Hicks

I think 2nd place should have took it. 1st place winner seems like he favors Honeycomb, AP is about ALL THINGS Android. 2nd place winner definitely got it.

  • http://GrantGarrison.com OMGrant

    WOW.. just wow.. Amazing

  • Todd

Yeah, #2 is my favorite as well. All are awesome.

  • alang

Congratulations to the winners, these WP are truly great :)

  • JCopernicus

    Gunner got robbed.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

  • AC

Second place should have won, no doubt in my mind at all. They are all great, though!

  • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It's interesting how many people love #2 and how many think something completely different should have won. It's an interesting phenomenon I've been observing both within the team and outside the team. I guess some people love that kind of style and some think it's not suitable for a winning wallpaper.

I personally love it, Aaron and David think it's not a winner.

  • http://gplus.to/attilacsapo Attila Csapo

Hmm, I'm one of the runner ups, and the t-shirt is a tough cookie, since I'm in Hungary, and if I read it correctly, you guys can't send it here. Bummer :(

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Unfortunately, our t-shirt provider doesn't ship to countries outside of those listed.

  • Cliffy

I definitely think that the #1 runner up was much better than the actual 1st place winner. The runner-up’s seemed much more artistic and thought-out. The first place winner did a good job, but it just didn’t seem THAT original. It’s funny though, the thumbnail for this article has the image of the runner-up’s wallpaper. Why not have the first place winner as the thumbnail?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I did it mostly because that designed worked better for a square image than the winners. I really do like the 1st runner-up's design a lot.

  • BrazilianRider

Runner's Up 1, 2 and 3 where ALL better than #1 and #2... They where on a completely different level...

  • Vince

You can add me to the list of people who think #2 should have won. To be honest, the actual winner doesn't even make my top 5.

Like Artem said: "It's an interesting phenomenon."

    Congrats to all!

  • Samarth

I am one of the runners-up. Thanks for selecting my entry. I appreciate it. Just wanted to know if we can select a sweat-shirt too from the options we have for the give aways?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

For you - yes, you rock, as long as you live in the U.S., otherwise please pick a t-shirt.

  • http://SPOOLEDUPRACING.COM Aaron Ferguson

Awesome! Made it into the 17th spot. Thanks! There are some awesome submissions.

  • Ahmad Fayiz

    me no win :'(((((((((((

Congrats for the winners !! second design is awesome !

  • bk w/ bloody sauce

Congrats to the winner, but I agree 2nd is better.

  • Ronnie

The second one is way better than the first...but Hunter is still the man lol

  • Erik I Graul

The 2 winners I'm not a fan of either of them!!! 1st runner up even tho i like it i don't think it was pure talent to create it! 2nd runner up is ok. 3rd no. 4th shouldn't even be a runner up along side being at 4th! No offense to the creator! 5th I don't like. I like 6! 7 is good. I think 8 should have won! It's the most skilled one! Even over mine! 9 and 10 no. I like 11th and 12th. 13th 14th 15th and 16th are ok! 17th 18th and 19th no. 20 is ok. 21 no. 22nd witch is mine and i like mine. And i put a lot of time and skill in them!!! Anybody that says different is bugging. But it mite not be good enough to be a wallpaper! But still deserves better the 22nd place!!! 23 24 and 25 are ok!!! There should have been less runner ups!!! My vote number "8" should have won!!! Now no one needs to agree with me! But i am a artiest. And been doing it my whole life! So I'm a expert!!! U can say I'm a sore loser! But its truly not coming from that!!! Just don't think this was jugged properly!!! No offense Artem!!!

    • Andrew

You really don't need that many exclamation marks, but you have some valid points there

  • GraveUypo

as far as wallpapers go, runner up #11 takes the cake, easy.

clean, gets the message across clearly, well balanced and just well made. probably the only one out of these i'd ever use as a wallpaper.

  • http://www.unwiredmedic.com Christopher Matthews

Very nice! Congratulations to the winners and the runners-up!

  • Dan

    Mine didn't place? really?

  • Dave

Interesting choices here. I think you chose relatively well, Art, showing the range of talents of readers.

As an aside, I find it really funny when people claim they are "artists" and have a more valid opinion than others when it is something as personal as a wallpaper. I, personally, prefer something clean and minimal which melts away and allows you to focus on the content above it, while others prefer a busier background which is the feature of the screen itself.

This is the reason why design competitions are always controversial, it's always a matter of taste. This competition was judged by Art, so the work has to appeal to him, not to the general public.

  • Andrew L.

Ryan Smith deserved to win this one. The rendering is absolutely gorgeous. Well done, mate! =)

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Holy crap, someone actually agrees with the winning choice after looking at the detailing up-close. I must be dreaming!

  • Hal Motley

I do hope AP has it's own live wallpaper. Maybe the sirens can alternate from red to blue and back again.

What do you think Artem, are you a live wallpaper junkie like me?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Live wallpapers aren't as easy to make as boot animations, so I'm not sure we'll get one unless it's done in a really big contest. A boot screen, however, that's not a bad idea.

      • Hal Motley

I like your style, I could settle for an Android Police bootloader. But it must be better than the CyanogenMod 7 bootloader otherwise I won't switch! :-)

Still I think that the siren animation would be a pretty cool component of an Android Police bootloader.

Hi Hal, whoever you are? Lol.  OMG!  I am a live wall paper JUNKIE!  Big time!  Do they have any good ones?  I found one or two?  I just found this web site the other day!!  I can't wait for the S3!  That phone is going to ROCK!!!

  • Todd

I want #2 without the police.

    • Frank John

      There's no AP without Police!

  • Jean-Francois Messier

I really like those pictures. Especially the fact that many of those are for tablets.

  • http://www.statsprofessor.org/ StatsProfessor

These are great, like #2 runner-up.

  • knuckleheadTech

Would be nice to have a .zip of all of them. They would make a great rotating background!
