I guess Sprint and Samsung decided it was finally time to cater to the needs of all the Epic owners out there, as the official Gingerbread OTA update is officially rolling out. Aside from Gingerbread, the update offers up the usual: bug fixes, enhanced features, etc. Sprint kept the changelog short and sweet on this one, have a look:

  • Upgrade of the Google OS from Froyo to Gingerbread (Android 2.3)
  • Audible Sprint AIRAVE™ notifications when answering call
  • SMS messages sent without area code
  • PRL and Profile update
  • EAS (Exchange Activesync) email displaying HTML
  • Bluetooth headset sound improvements
  • Fully visible date on device lock screen

And there you have it. Gingerbread, general improvements, and other stuff. Head into Settings > About Phone > System Updates to see if it's available on your device.

Update: If you are itching to get Gingerbread on your Epic, but the update isn't available to your device just yet, you can grab it manually like so:

  1. Download the update from Google's servers.
  2. Rename to update.zip
  3. Place on root directory of sdcard (directory that pops up when you mass storage your device to computer)
  4. Boot into stock recovery (Vol Down+Camera+Power)
  5. Select install update.zip
  6. Boot into GB !

11 months after Gingerbread was announced. Splendid work.

  • Vibrant Owner

Does this mean the Samsung Vibrant (Galaxy S variant) is actually going to get the update?

There are a few nagging issues that still have no fixes. My phone has gotten a GPS lock twice in the year I've owned it. After so many wifi connections I have to reboot my phone because it can't connect.

This kind of stuff on a FLAGSHIP phone makes me never want to get a Samsung phone again. I don't really ever expect to get Gingerbread. World peace has a better chance than the Vibrant getting Ice Cream Sandwich.

Doesn't mean much until T-Mobile moves their asses, which may never happen.

  • nene150

would this erase everything i have on my phone if i update manullay

  • Travis

nene150: no, it will just update and doesn't change any installed apps.

  • Tom

I'm getting an error when trying to apply this update... Anybody else experiencing this?

    Error is:

assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/bin/recovery", two big hashes) E: Error in /sdcard/update.zip (Status 7). Installation aborted.

    • Jaime

Same error... also an get an e-sig authentication error.

    • Jaime

Just got it to work. You have to dismount your phone from the computer properly and let the media scanner run on your phone completely before turning the phone off. Otherwise the file will get corrupted and you will get the aformentioned error. Guess I was too anxious to wait a bit and do it right. Good luck!

  • Sindy

Was getting the same error, but realized I had renamed the file to update.zip, when all I needed was the "update" part. So it was named update.zip.zip. ha ha. Dork move of the day. I assume that's the prob. My phone is now too low on power to attempt it again. Waiting, waiting.

    • Drizzzle01

      I did the same thing.

  • Sindy

Update...that was the problem. File was renamed .zip twice. Worked great! Very cool and thanks. Didn't want to wait 10 days for this.

  • Q McDonald

Will this work if your rooted but on stock?

  • Justin

I upgraded by clicking the link above from my phone and followed the steps. Very easy to update that way and didn't have to use a computer. The new update seems to be working well. They should of had this update a lot sooner and we probably will never see an official Ice Cream Sandwich but it would be nice.

    • Kody

How did you update from your phone? Once the file is on your phone how do you get it to the sd card root directory so it's there when you boot up the phone?

  • Silver

Alright I've tried this 4 times now with error code 7. I swear that i waited for everything to finish.... Is this happening because my phone is rooted???? Help I'm getting so pissed off at this thing....

    • Dan F.

Yes, if your phone is rooted it will not work. Odin back to stock and then retry. Trying to update while rooted will result in error codes and/or (soft) brick.

      • Silver

How do I do that, I got this phone off of ebay already rooted... I'm lost on how to unroot....

        • Dan F.

Go to xdadevelopers.com and read the wiki on the epic. It will outline the whole process.

      • Silver

Read it but have no Internet on the desktop, now what? Can I download Odin to my phone and transfer the file....? I really am lost.

        • Silver

Actually question, if i data/factory rest my phone when in clockworkmod will that unroot my phone..?

        • Dan F.

If you use odin it will return to factory stock, no root. I believe You can unroot/return to stock via zip however I am not up to speed on that?!?

  • mike

    File failed not booting

    • Pmendy

I think that happened to me, or similar. Kept restarting the boot screen. Had to do a hard reset and then it booted fine.

  • D.J.

These manufacturers and carriers ought to be ashamed (more the carriers in this instance) of their update speed. Gingerbread is almost a year old and Ice Cream Sandwich is a few weeks away.

Add to that the likely fact that no U.S. Galaxy S phone (not to be confused with the Galaxy S2) will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich and this is hilariously bad.

  • Jessica

I just manually installed gingerbread on my epic...but haven't been able to do anything because the media scanning is taking forever. Ugh.

    • Kody

How did you update from your phone?

  • MXmorale

Now I have an Epic4g on Boost Mobile and I dont know if anyone knows but in order to use that phone on BOOST you need to basically have a donor phone so that the system thinks is another phone and not recognize the Epic 4g...could this be the reason why I also keep getting this ERROR when trying to update???

assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/bin/recovery", two big hashes) E: Error in /sdcard/update.zip (Status 7). Installation aborted

Will appreciate an answer thank you

    • snazzyman

I also keep receiving the status 7 error. I even wiped my phone back to the factory settings. Were you able to figure out a solution to this error?

  • Justin

I updated it and when i go to browser it still looks like the old style browser i want to GB type browser theme why is that happening?

  • Bob Smith

update keeps cycing through the boot up screen? any ideas?

  • Bootpants

Does this manual update work on unrooted phones?

  • chris

I downloaded update, renamed, stock recovery, then apply sd:card:update.zip, and got error

Failed to open/sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory. Signature verification failed

when it downloads it goes into download file so does the update need to go somewhere else and if so how do I move it there

    • randy

I have been having the exact same problem.Have you figured out where to move the update file ?Any help would be appreciated.

  • Andrew

You have to make sure that the file is not named "update.zip.zip" use the windows file explorer while it is in mass storage mode and make sure the file name just says "update" with no zip after it in the name! I was having the same issue and this solved it!!

    • randy

Thanks for the help .I got it to work right before I read your response.I installed Astro file manager and followed the directions just as I did before but it installed this time.Seems smoother and comes up much faster.

  • Deborah

Update.zip is in place, but vol down-camera-power doesn't give me a recovery boot, just turns the phone on. Any other way to trigger the file?

  • Summer

woot. Great comments everyone! I was finally able to get it to work once I just put update in instead of update.zip! :) I'm pleased and my husband thinks I'm a genius!

  • leo

The key combination isn't working on my epic 4g.....any suggestions?

  • Cin

Love the update!!!!! The last update that came out (froyo) was total crap. And my phone had been acting a little buggy lately, but with this update it's worked beautifully. It's more responsive and battery life seems better

  • Fritzie

I just updated and not much enhancements were made. My biggest issue is that I can't silence or turn down the shutter sound on the camera now. It's obnoxiously loud and under camera settings there isn't an option to disable it only change the shutter sound. Any help would be appreciated.

    • ciara

I have a samsung replenish and after the update my phone is making the same shutter sound, have not been able to find a mute switch anywhere.

      • michelle

I can't get the sound off either. It is highly annoying and I have tried everything. Even in silent mode it is on. No bueno. I hate gingerbread, honestly. The new browser sucks too.

  • Kimberly

Here is my problem... Love the update.. with the exception that now ALL and I mean ALL of my notifications VIBRATE along with the sound. I have turned all the notifications off vibrate and the phone is not on vibrate.. I must not be phone savvy enough to figure it out. It updated for me last Thursday and its driving me nuts that I cant stop the vibration..which eats my battery might I add...

    • Thai

Kim, try going into your text messages>menu>settings and make the necessary adjustments..

  • Jay

When I try to do this manual update, I follow all of the directions to the letter and each time I go to the install part on the phone I get "failed to verify whole-file signature." Not sure what could be going wrong here.

  • Gary F.

Hi - I got a new Epic 4G (shortly before the Epic II 4G came out) a couple of months ago. Got the new Gingerbread update shortly thereafter. It appears that this update has created some new problems:
    1. Touchscreen has a lag response when touched (dialing out, looking up contacts, etc.)
    2. My contact lookup freezes up when I do a lookup in the lookup field. I have to touch the empty field and another lookup field appears at the top of the screen. From there I can lookup a contact without the screen freezing up. Equally annoying is that I can only lookup a contact by name. Before the update, I could lookup a contact by name, company, etc. which was very beneficial for work reasons.
    3. My touchscreen will occasionally freeze up for no explanation no matter what I do on the phone.
Has anyone experienced this or know of a fix?

    • Ranga V

Experiencing the same issues as Gary F. Screen just freezes up and I had to take out the battery (it is a pain if you have phone cover) to reboot the phone. Onetime it just lost the service (sprint) near Costco and I was waiting for my wife's call. Actually she called 5 times and left voicemails. Finally she decided to come out and look for me in the huge parking lot. It is really a pain now to carry this phone without any reliability. Switching to iPhone on Jan 10th (my contract end date)

  • http://101wisconsin.weborglodge.com Chris

No end of problems after the "update." Random restarts, phone locks up and GPS is virtually useless. Will probably replace my phone when I can unless Sprint pushes a fix.

  • chobbs

hey its not installing on my samsung epic and im following the directions perfectly

  • jesse

When I try to do this manual update, I follow all of the directions to the letter and each time I go to the install part on the phone I get “failed to verify whole-file signature.” Not sure what could be going wrong here.
