Following up on the success of our 404 design and banner design contests, we've decided to run another creative giveaway, graciously sponsored by NVIDIA and Philips. Personally, I think the creative contests are always the best - we get beautiful graphic assets and designs, and our talented readers get a platform on which to showcase their skills and creative abilities. Besides all that, looking through the entries is always a good time.

The Contest

This time around, we're looking for static wallpapers. Specifically, we're looking for well-designed, versatile wallpapers that are clearly related to Android Police - think of it as designing the official AP wallpaper.

Your entries should be creative, visually appealing, eye-catching, and formatted to various screen resolutions (which are listed below). We want to see the most creative designs our readers can come up with, so the design parameters are wide open.

General Guidelines

Here are a few tips on how to ensure your entry is viable:

  • Upload your entries to imgur.com and post a link (or links) here in the comments. Be sure to include your real email address in the comment form so we can contact you. Please also be sure to save your original file for us (preferably in PSD format).
  • You can submit as many entries as you like (within reason).
  • Try to avoid using existing AP art work, as it is always subject to change. Give us a timeless design.
  • You may or may not include copy (including our official slogan - Looking after all things Android), that's up to you.
  • You may enter with only one wallpaper resolution below. Keep in mind, however, that we'd love it if you submitted more sizes. Try to avoid uploading ALL the sizes at once however, until you've gotten some positive comment feedback.
  • On that note, the winner of the contest must submit their design in ALL the specified formats, together with their PSD counterparts, before the prize is shipped.
  • You may only include graphics (including photos, clip art, etc.) that you have created entirely by yourself, or those which fall under a Creative Commons License. Any entry containing copyrighted work(s) or apparent derivatives thereof will be disqualified. We have to stress this point, as we absolutely can't use works with copyrighted material.
  • Stay away from designs that are focused around a single photographic image. We want unique designs, not high-res photos.
  • If you would like to use the same font we use in the AP logo, you can find it here: XSCALE.

Suggested Resolutions

As mentioned above, the winner of the contest will be required to provide assets in all of the formats listed below (and corresponding PSD files), but only one of these is necessary for entry. This may be a rather long list, but including these formats will ensure that many people can grace their devices with your gorgeous design when the contest is over.

Each phone/tablet resolution listed below should accommodate swiping between screens. If you can't decide which resolution to start with, use 960x800 - that's the scrollable version of 480x800.

  • 1440x1280
  • 960x800
  • 1920x1408
  • 1280x1024
  • 1680x1050
  • 1920x1080

The Prizes

This time, we have two prizes up for grabs.

Sony Tablet S

First is a brand new Sony Tablet S. The S is a formidable, unique entry into the bevvy of Honeycomb and NVIDIA powered tablets out there, bringing a visually intriguing, lightweight form factor, all the Tegra 2 power you've come to love, and even IR remote capabilities to the table (or tablet - take your pick). Here's a more complete look at what the Tablet S has in store under its slender frame:

  • Android 3.1 Honeycomb
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 Dual-Core Processor at 1GHz
  • 9.4" display with TruBlack technology (1280x800 resolution)
  • 16GB internal storage
  • Bluetooth Capability
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity
  • 1GB RAM
  • 5MP Rear Camera and .3MP Front Shooter

Philips Fidelio AS851

Our second place winner will receive the Philips Fidelio AS851 stereo dock, which we recently reviewed. The Fidelio is, by all accounts, a powerful audio docking option for your Android handset and provides great sound quality and responsiveness. The dock will accommodate a wide array of Android devices, thanks to its swivel/sliding action. Note: You will receive our review unit, so it won't be brand new.

Now that everyone is excited, we'll get to the official rules.

The Terms

This contest is now over. We have selected the winners and 25 runners-up - check them out in all their glory here.

This contest begins immediately and will run through next Sunday, November 13th 11:59 p.m., at which point deliberations will begin as to the best design. When winners are chosen, we will notify them via email.

Entry to the contest is open to anyone, but note that we will only ship the prizes to the countries listed in the terms below.

You can submit as many entries as you want, but keep this amount reasonable and refine your submissions before publicizing them.

This contest is for static wallpapers, not live ones. However, if you do submit a mind blowing live wallpaper, we won't disqualify it.

Please Note: All entries become property of Android Police upon submission.

  • Barton

And no resolution for new wave of 720p phones in the chart?

    • http://www.liamspradlin.com Liam Spradlin

Good call - I've added one to the list.

      • Yorick

You might want to change that to 1440x1280 instead of 1280x1440. It makes a difference ;)

  • http://paweljonik.net/g+ Pawel Jonik

Is PSD a must? I'm sure many folks out here would like to participate and don't have/use Windows/Mac and Adobe things

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It's not a must - but we'll need whatever the original file is you used in whatever program you used.

      • http://mitchs.co Mitch Samuels

@Pawel If you use Gimp (Me, on Ubuntu), just save it as a .psd. The layers stay in tact, but invisible layers are not preserved.

Also make a backup .xcf just in case.

        • http://paweljonik.net/g+ Pawel Jonik

@Mitch: Good point. I Hadn't thought about that.

  • Haim Ifrah

"All entries become property of Android Police upon submission."... what happened?
    ran out of t-shirts? :D

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Plenty of t-shirts still around, and we'll be glad to do runners-up. This is a level of protection from entrants submitting and then withdrawing their entries after not winning.

  • Erik I Graul

U can enter with any of the sizes? Or is there a pacific size u prefer? Also i have somethings left over from the last contest. Can i use it? all but what won a runner up I'm sure. One of My design won a runner up on the banner contest...

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

The post specifies that if you want to start with something, you should do 960x800, as that's the scrollable version of 480x800.

You can use stuff from your previous submissions, don't see why not.

      • Erik I Graul

        k... Thanks man!!!

  • Hal Motley

Can it be a live wallpaper or does it have to be static?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

These are static wallpapers, not live, although if your LWP submission is mind blowing to win the 1st place, we'll allow it.

  • ryandigweed

    Limit on submissions per person?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

      No limits.

  • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I've run through all initial 14 resolutions and simplified/narrowed down the list to just 6 to make it easier for everyone.

  • Joshua

I have the worst luck with these things. But here goes.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Hey, that's not bad. The gradient is pretty visible, so hopefully you can fix it. Also, if you could perhaps consider using the font we use http://www.dafont.com/xscale.font, it might resemble AP more.

      • Joshua

I'll give it a go. The original doesn't have so much banding. I'll upload a copy to my own server.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Try uploading as a 24-bit png. If that doesn't help, try Minus.com.

  • http://www.zacharyflategraff.com Zac F

    Greetings fellow Android enthusiasts!

Just some designs, nothing crazy great.

Best of luck to everyone! :)

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Most of them don't seem related to AP at all, they're just cool wallpapers. In the only 2 relevant ones, I just see the AP initials. I'm sorry, but this just won't fly as an entry - they're too generic.

  • Rohan

Can we get some nice high-res images of the logo?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I'd like to stay away from using any current logos, considering this may change soon.

      • Rohan

        Okay, got it. Thanks.

  • http://varemenos.com/ Varemenos

Ofc, lets not include Greece. Always the same...

Wow. That's kind of awesome. Could use a bit more finesse, but I like the idea!

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

      Welcome back, RC :)

Definitely a good start, but that background is painful. Keep working on it!

  • LaQuann Dawson

Must they include text, the logo, etc or can it be a wallpaper?

    • http://www.liamspradlin.com Liam Spradlin

As long as your entry is clearly related to Android Police, (almost) anything goes!

      • LaQuann Dawson

Wow why is my picture some woman?

And okay cool thank you !

Reasoning behind my background. Nice weather= Always nice at Android police.

Android Police handing over a phone to a customer= Generosity of Android Police (Hopefully towards me this time. :P)

The Guy has his hands up in the air as he thought that he was being held at gunpoint......but is still surprised how generous Android Police can be.

Should i write down my email address here or.....what?

  • Joel Joseph

there are a couple of good ones.... but the ONE... AP's gotta decide... ;)

  • Joshua

    Damn, the competition is stiff!
I made some changes, new font, and made a pretty decent looking badge.

I guess u can... I don't think i can stop anybody... :) Thanks for the support!!! I'm glad u like it!!!

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

This is pretty sick. 3D is real nice, but the text really stands out like a sore thumb. If you could work on that and maybe put more work into the background, you'll have a really solid entry.

  • http://mortemtuam.weebly.com/ Alex Hernandez

    OK my third entry...enjoy

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I like the concept and half of the execution, but some of the elements are a bit too amateurish. I can see it as a solid entry with more work.

      • http://mortemtuam.weebly.com/ Alex Hernandez

Will try and bring it up to par then.

Very good potential, the middle/main part is great, but the background/rest detracts from the overall quality. You could make a kick-ass wallpaper out of this for sure with some tweaks.

Giving the dark version of metal glory... I think I'll probably stop working on this entry...

    • http://www.liamspradlin.com Liam Spradlin

I really like this one. I'd say nix the puzzle pieces, decrease the opacity of the honeycomb pattern, and you'll have a very strong entry.

  • Ryan Smith

Well, here is my submission. I've Been working on it for a while. It's currently 1920x1080.

    Please leave feedback. Thanks! :)

    • Ryan Smith

Here's an alternate of the wallpaper that may look better on mobile devices:

      • abhinav

        so far the best IMO

      • Ryan Smith

I just realized that imgur lowered the quality of my upload. I reduced the filesize ahead of time, so this one should look better:

    • http://www.liamspradlin.com Liam Spradlin

      Very nice work.

    • Ryan Smith

Made a few modifications to give it more character and smooth it out. I appreciate your feedback! :D

Final Version of Entry #1, I swear...

Truth be told, I'm having a lot of fun making these, I don't get to do design work a lot for my daytime job so this is pretty different for me.

    • SirWally

I like it. Good job! One minor nit-pick is the ellipsis after the slogan...I would probably drop that because it doesn't read quite right with it.

      • http://www.kaiyoti.com kaiyoti

        Done, thanks for the suggestion.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I'd also try dropping the giant reflection. It should look way cleaner and less Apple-like without it.

    • http://www.kaiyoti.com kaiyoti

Took out giant reflection as Artem suggested

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

        Looking good.

    OK. Here goes...
I have a bunch of different versions of effectively the same wallpaper, all at 1920x1408. I have posted them to my site for the moment, but will upload a select few to imgur.com later once I narrow down the best ones.

Please let me know what you think, even if you don't like them :-)

    • SirWally

I uploaded all the images to a single album on imgur: http://imgur.com/a/W17td

Sorry! Didn't realize you could create non-anonymous content on imgur (first time I have used it). Please view the images here instead: http://imgur.com/a/zm3Av/

Alright, first of all, all of you have posted great Wallpapers!
Here's my entry: It is a very simple design (mainly for phones/tablets, not for desktops!), because I think a phone's wallpaper shouldn't be too complex. ;-)

  • Gunner
  • Andrew L.

Ryan Smith's 3D chrome Android WP is amazing. I'm voting for that one! =)

  • http://thezargon.org/googleplus Fernando Fonseca

Hello everyone, here is my entry.
    Concept: Clean
Scope: I kept in mind that the wallpaper will be used for several devices and that is why I went with a clean and subtle design. The objective is that the users will keep the wallpaper on their devices / desktop because is not interfering with their overall experience and day to day activities.

What would you do to make this better?

  • Tommy

Here's my first. I have another plan for this little guy. Hoping I can finish it before Sunday. http://i.imgur.com/QTegR.jpg

Here it is on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. I think the 10.1 crops it weird...:/

    My second entry.
    Title: All Android Flavors
Concept: Android is all about different flavors, teams, communities. In this wallpaper I tried to express that in the shape of routes and expressing the claim "Looking after all things Android" part of the wallpaper.

  • http://gplus.to/attilacsapo Attila Csapo

Here is mine in preview mode:

And here is the real deal, if you wanna give it a spin: http://goo.gl/bVvts

The text is clear and readable on my 3,7 screen, so I guess it should work on every phone.

Everything is hand-vectored in Photoshop, except the font, of course.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

      Great entry!

  • http://SPOOLEDUPRACING.COM Aaron Ferguson

First entry. I have a "Normal" version with text, and i have a "Clean" version with just the image.

    • http://SPOOLEDUPRACING.COM Aaron Ferguson

I can fix the slight differences in the sizes if needed. I wanted to just get a submission in. :)

    Hi all, that`s my entry:

    • Tommy

Definitely one of the better ones, if not the best.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Sick entry! The only thing you could tweak is maybe make the Android a bit more animate, maybe add a steering wheel or something.

    • stanosky

Thanks Tommy. Artem you're right. I will try to improve the appearance of an android.

    • stanosky

      Here is my update entry:

      • Cameron Summerson

Very nice. Using this as the wallpaper on my second monitor right now.

        • stanosky

Thanks Cameron! I`am very happy with that :). Here is another update. I add some car interior and I think the wallpaper is finished.

          • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

            I'm in love already.

Good luck to all of you and nice work everybody.

  • Yella

Ok so im not wasting any more time on this one..just changed and moved the text.Didnt want to much to clutter around the phone or tablet icons

  • http://pra.sh Prash

I may be a little late, but here is my one and only entry.

    1920x1080 version

    960x800 (hdpi version)

I'm using it on my N1 and its looking pretty sweet as is.

I have it in pretty much all the above mentioned resolutions already if anyone wants it, just ping me and I'll get it out to you.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Hey, nice to see you here, Prash. Great entry.

      • http://pra.sh Prash

Thanks, someone sent me the link to the post and I figured might as well keep the creative juices flowing and do more wallpapers.

Looks like a great competition, lot of great entries already.

      • http://pra.sh Prash

Is this version better for the smaller screens as you had suggested? Its just different cropping, http://i.imgur.com/0Awnq.jpg

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

          It is indeed.

        • http://pra.sh Prash

          Wallpaper Entry #1(Fixed)

Just redid the background so it doesn't look fuzzy-ish, basically cropped at 100%

          Desktop Version (fixed)

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Just noticed the gradients showing up in the jpgs - you got pngs of these perhaps, Prash?

        • http://pra.sh Prash

Yes, they are all pngs actually, I am not sure why imgur turns them into jpgs when I upload them though.

The originals I had done are all uploaded as PNGs on my dropbox, I'll share it if you'd like the rest of the sizes, if not heres the hdpi in png version.

    • Cameron Summerson

My favorite entry thus far. Love how minimal and clean it is while remaining visually stimulating. Awesome job.

      • http://pra.sh Prash

Thank you! minimal and clean is what I was aiming for. I hate cluttered up backgrounds, makes the icons in front disappear.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

          Hey Prash,

Any way we can see a variant with either a smooth background of some sort or the mesh not as fine? Something about it being so small makes it look... grainy or something on a small screen. What do you think?

        • http://pra.sh Prash

I'll make a background without the mesh and see how it looks, or maybe play around with the cropping so it doesn't look as bad. When I get home, since originals are on my pc there.

  • http://www.sahilkhanna.org Sahil Khanna

I would really love some suggestions... till now I received none.. :(
Believe me it would help me alot

      • Dan

Ok, well for the phone grenade, i think if it were thrown, it wouldn't leave a shadow right there, it almost looks like it is thrown from his face.

        Hope that helps.

        • http://www.sahilkhanna.org Sahil Khanna

Phone grenade? I think you are talking about the officer's whistle.. well if its unclear or redundant I could remove it... would it help?

          thanks btw

  • http://www.sahilkhanna.org Sahil Khanna

oops forgot a green version too... my bad :P

  • Yella

MY 4TH TRY...tryna stay away from the red and blue as much..even tho its police colors

  • Bjorn Althoff
    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

The last one is amazing, though I'm not a fan of the background. Very impressive otherwise.

    • Cameron Summerson

The last one is absolutely amazing, but I'm not the biggest fan of the background. Maybe try switching it up with something a bit more subtle?

Edit: Artem beat me to it, but at least we're all on the same page.

  • http://taketheleap.ca TakeTheLeap

I had a look over a lot of the entries and the thing that struck me with most of them, is that they're just too busy. I therefore tried to go as minimalist as I could. Here's to hoping it's well-received:
