Google is working on building a photo editor into the Android Gallery. That much we're certain about - we've got the icons for it. It's not 100% confirmed that this will actually ship, or if these features or icons are final, but do you really think they'd do all this work and throw it out?

With the disclaimer out of the way, here's the icons and descriptions, ripped right from Ice Cream Sandwich's creamy center.

Update 10/18/11: Confirmed during the ICS unveiling.

Note: All the tool icons were white on transparent, so I gave them a black background. The sizes are exactly how they were when we got them. Just because the icons look black and white doesn't mean they will look like that in the app itself - they can be tinted, colored, "gradiented," etc. Think of them as base icons.

The "Colors" button also has art for an adjustable slider control. There is also a slider called "Generic", which could be for anything.

Wild speculation time: The small icons are probably on-screen the whole time. I bet "Fix" brings up the large icon tools and "Artistic" (the FX icon) brings up the effects.

This is all built into the Gallery APK (which doesn't run on older versions of Android, sorry) so expect an "Edit" button while you're viewing your pictures.

A whopping 19 icons for photo effects."Fill Light", "Highlight", and "Shadow" have their own slider control art, and again, there's that "Generic" one that could be for anything.

That's it for now, you'll get more when we do!

Thanks, Geek Vundotra!

Ron loves everything related to technology, design, and Google. He always wants to talk about "the big picture" and what's next for Android, and he's not afraid to get knee-deep in an APK for some details. Expect a good eye for detail, lots of research, and some lamenting about how something isn't designed well enough.

Another thing seen in a lot of apps recently, now being built right into the OS. :)

  • Brad

  • Hooman

Enough of ICS news, gimme the damn thing already!

  • Fady Mahfouz

Okay, Okay, Im sold, give me the damn OS already !

  • Steve

The At&t Samsung galaxy S2 has it but not as many features.. It's pretty good..

  • Near

It seems like Google is actually trying this time. I like where this is going. Hopefully we all won't be disappointed when ICS drops.

  • hinds

Its like the hype beast feeding! Tuesday night can't come fast enough.

  • http://www.theandroidsite.com Ben Marvin

why must you keep teasing us???!?

  • http://tantrajnaan.com Robert Dunn

Where are you getting all of this information? Is it all from the same source? I'll just wait for Tuesday night with heavily baited breath.

  • redd

Forreal man. Y'all keep teaing us wit all this ICS goodness. I need this on my Nexus.

  • dextroz

Photo editor is 2009. By now ics better have a good video editor, screenshot and screencam capabilities.

    • Justin Case

:D sounds like you already have had a peak.

  • Sleepin in CA

Yawn. Who uses the stock camera anymore? It has been such a piece of basic crap for so long. I highly doubt a UI change and a few more options will let it come near Vignette, or any of the other high end camera programs on the market. ICS needs something new, not the same updated/reskinned stuff. So far the only real change are the on screen buttons. Who the fuck cares?? So, I repeat, YAWN!

    A seriously disappointed android fanboy.

    • rich

You should talk to apple about this, I heard they have a new women who will listen about your problems and pretend to care

    • GazaIan

Did you happen to see any of the good things in ICS? There's about 40 you failed to mention.

    • LOL

Yeah, who cares about this new stuff in ICS. ICS needs new stuff!

  • http://www.iom.com Steven Ball

Vic Gundotra stop leeking stuff man :))

  • giese

    more screenshots pleaseeee
we know you have them :)

  • ManMythLegend

Sorry but Android gallery is and has ALWAYS been slow , clunky ,choppy , and sadly plagued with low res issues.

No faith theyve fixed any of that.

Love my tab 10.1 but the gallery app when compared to how smooth and FAST the ipad gallery is makes it laughable.

Bunch of new features are good but who cares when it takes forever to load a high res pic or album.

    • Dan

I think you're on the wrong site.

      • Android4ever

No, he's got a good point. I am an android user and love android, but lack of extensive hardware acceleration on android is something that's always bothered me when i look at iOS devices. Where is that buttery smoothness?
        Maybe on ICS...

        • manmythlegend

thank you. I love android but the gallery issues are well documented. The lack of quality HW acceleration coding is THE major issue Android has that plagues the ui. Nowhere is it more apparent than with gallery app.
Based on comments in the last I/O and there dev pages Google doesn't see it as an important issue thus no faith in them fixing it.

  • Dennis

    The effects are from Picnik.

  • Tarek

Just take my money before i explode from impatience

  • http://brainsparks.net David

I wonder how this will affect those of us that use G+ to auto upload our pictures. Do you think there will be a built in delay or when we edit pictures will it update the pictures online also, or do you think we will end up with multiple versions of the same image?

  • markii

Some photos are not grainy enough. Better add that "Grain" FX.

  • RK

I always wondered why articles from this site doesn't make it to Techmeme. This article is featured on techmeme. That should happen often. Break more stories guys :)
