While the entire tech world is abuzz with news of the just-announced Kindle Fire, MetroPCS unveiled the latest smartphone to land on its 4G LTE network: the LG Esteem 4G.

The Esteem is sporting some nice mid-range specs, and looks to be the clear winner if you're considering MetroPCS as your carrier-of-choice:

  • 4.3-inch 480x800 display
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 5MP rear shooter, 1.3MP ffc
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • Android 2.3

While it's not the most powerful device on the planet, the pricepoint of this device almost makes up for it: $250. No contract. That's the price after a $100 mail-in-rebate, but compared to off-contract pricing of equivalent hardware from a post-paid carrier, that's a steal.

The Esteem 4G will be available "this week" online and at all MetroPCS retail outlets.

DALLAS – (September 27, 2011) – MetroPCS Communications, Inc. (NYSE: PCS), and LG Mobile today introduced the latest addition to MetroPCS’ line-up of 4GLTE - enabled smartphones with the entertainment-packed LG EsteemTM.  Available this week in stores and online, the chic new LG Esteem 4GLTE Android smartphone delivers an incredible entertainment experience for customers including music and multimedia applications like Rhapsody Unlimited Music and MetroSTUDIOTM. Powered by Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), LG Esteem features a sleek, modern design for style-conscious consumers looking for the latest smartphone technology.

“Our customers want more entertainment services and multimedia, and the LG Esteem delivers all of the multimedia they desire right at their fingertips with the easy access afforded by our 4GLTE network,” said Tom Keys, president and chief operating officer of MetroPCS. “By pairing a premium handset with the latest features and our unbeatable service offerings, we are providing our customers with a tremendous value.  We’re the only no-annual contract, pay-in-advance carrier providing 4G LTE service today, and with our latest 4G LTE smartphone, consumers can take full advantage of our network and the exploding array of Android market applications available today.”

At about half the cost of other 4G smartphone service plans today, consumers can truly have it all with MetroPCS' $50 and $60 4GLTE plans, which include all applicable taxes and regulatory fees. For just $60, consumers can choose between unlimited music with Rhapsody or video entertainment with MetroSTUDIO – on top of unlimited Internet access, voice and texting services. With the vast music library provided by the new Rhapsody Unlimited Music service, music lovers can play, download and store or stream as many songs as they want, free from the per-track charges that come with most other music download services.

“LG Esteem is the ideal device for entertainment savvy consumers looking for on-the-go content and the latest Android technology,” said Tim O’Brien, vice president of marketing for LG Mobile. “Together with the MetroPCS 4GLTE network, LG Esteem provides users with a wide variety of features not previously accessible to no-annual-contract mobile consumers and delivers a truly enhanced user experience.”

Capturing and sharing personal multimedia has never been easier with a front-facing camera and 5MP rear camera with flash, 720p HD video recording, allowing users to watch videos and view images directly from the handset’s brilliant 4.3” WVGA screen or use the micro-HDMI port and DLNA streaming capability to transmit HD content directly to home entertainment units, as well as face-to-face video calling using the Esteem’s pre-loaded Google Talk Application. In addition, LG Esteem is equipped with a 1GHz processor, 8GB of internal memory and Dolby® Mobile Surround 7.1 and a Corning® Gorilla® Glass Screen Protector. Combined with MetroPCS’ 4GLTE service, LG Esteem provides an unparalleled Internet and entertainment consumer experience.

LG Esteem will be available for $249 plus tax, after mail-in rebate, through January 1, 2012. Plus, customers purchasing the LG Esteem will receive Rhapsody Unlimited Music FREE for 90 days through a limited time promotional offer when they activate the $50 4GLTE service plan. Consumers interested in purchasing the LG Esteem can visit their local store or go online to purchase the phone and sign up for service.

Nice phone, but Metro PCS' network is still a piece of garbage.

Wake up, you are talking about 12 years ago. I use metro all over the U.S and i got great signal all over

So true..I drove through all the southern states and have great service...they now cover 90% of the nation. My family of 5 all have unlimited phone usage text and talk all for under $200 per month...cant beat that!

Keep telling yourself that and wasting your money. I've had them all over the last twenty plus years. I'll take unlimited everything with smoking fast 4G LTE data and, CDMA voice over a contract my attorney did not write, any day of the week.

I will say that an iPhone 4S on AT&T does have the ability to do both data and voice, but do you really need that, some do, some don't.

My Simple Wireless on an iPhone is worth mentioning, if you simply have to have an iPhone, but prefer to avoid contracts. However, AT&T, and Verizon have superior networks.

LOL. Metro execs must be high. That's $200 too expensive.

Naa, METRO pcs screwed up. As of today, The LG Esteem is 349 plus tax, and they don't have the 100 rebate according to their website and I also asked their chat support. BAD METRO. Hope they lower the price because I would much rather waste my money on a new laptop instead spending almost 400 on a dang phone. As for their network (last comment) In Atlanta, it is great. I drive to Chicago and back and am able to use the phone all the way with only a few drop locations. Not bad for 50 bucks on my plan.

Haha really metropcs.. I wish you guys would work on a better network before putting out such a nice phone. I would get this new phone but only if I have 4g in my area or at least a real 3g signal to fall back on. And as for the price its not bad. I think its worth it cause it would be more on any other company for just the phone no contract. ppl don't see with other phone company yes the phone would only be like 200 but the contract is 80+ a month for 2 years. Just fix the network. I have the samsung indulge for metro and I love it.

not with this phone! its really good service I just got it .it is worth it BETTER THAN iphone ....50 DOLLARS A MONTH ...WILE THE I PHONES IS 130 A MONTH LIMITED COMMON

  • buddy banks

Love it need some more love on this one

Metro 4G is way faster than any iPhone. I just clocked mine at 3.5 meg down and 3.4 meg up! I tested it again just to make sure it was not a fluke. Then I tested it on my DSL WiFi connection. My phone is consistently faster than the DSL connections at my home and office.

The Android OS, has issues, but that is a factor on any carrier. Yes, you can get better Android phones on Verizon, but you can't get landline caller ID, nor unlimited 411 texted with addresses. Those features are indispensable for me.

Sorry guys, I don't sign contracts my attorney did not write.

I live in rural part of California, on a busy weapons station (Navy Base Ventura) so with all of the jets and C-130's, mixed with being sandwiched between the mountains and the ocean, you'd think like our crappy sprint palm pixis the Lg Esteem would have the same laggy issues, phone call drops, etc that we've had since we were stationed here..BUT..im proud to say i love Metro Pcs and this amazing phone!!
