If you're having difficulty controlling your desire to get Gingerbread on your HTC Thunderbolt right now, you're not alone. But, if you've been waiting for the official release, you've probably grown very impatient by this point. It appears the wait is nearing an end, as Verizon's support site now contains a page for the Thunderbolt's long-overdue bump to Android 2.3.4. Here are the changes they've listed:

Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update, Build Number: 2.11.605.3; Baseband:,, for your ThunderBolt by HTC. This update provides several improvements for your device, as well as upgrading to the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Operating System (OS).

Will this update solve the Thunderbolt's (and every other 4G LTE VZW phone's it seems) dreaded data connectivity problems? Some have reported that the new radio contained in this update has done just that.

Can't wait? We posted a full, flashable RUU (system image) of this build just a few days ago. You can find it here. It'll also wipe your phone (completely), so weigh your options. It could be days before Verizon begins rolling out the update - or it could be weeks. We won't know until it starts happening.

I've had the new radio flashed for a couple days and it DEFINITELY helped with data... I used to have 1x in house. Even though I had 3g in my d1 now I have solid 3g on my tbolt. With the new radio and gingerbread and an extended battery I can finally use my phone how I want to.

  • http://gplus.to/mbk Michael

Hold on -- I flashed this RUU a couple days ago, and this build number and baseband version installed 2.3.4, not .5.

    • Collin

Yeah I'm pretty sure it is... Michael, are you rooted? If so I suggest just installing a custom rom next time and flashing the radio separately.

      • http://gplus.to/mbk Michael

        Nope, not rooted.

        • Collin

Ahhh ok... I say that because I've been on gingerbread for months

    • David Ruddock

My mistake - this has been fixed. Thanks for pointing it out! :)

  • joseph

What you failed to mention is that build is still plagued with the voicemail notification bug.

  • sgtguthrie

Sooo, they're releasing an ota that has the voicemail notification bug? Wow, they must be TRYING to kill off this device!!! Oh well, just so they release kernel source in a timely manner, I won't really care :-)

    • Collin

I'm on. 0 and haven't seen the bug... So I think that actually may be resolved

    • sithdroid2187

Just because it is the same build number doesn't mean that they didn't go in at the last minute and fix the VM notifications. Why not wait until the official drops and test instead of speculating?

      • http://gplus.to/mbk Michael

        Because of Veruca Salt.

        • sithdroid2187

One of the best chick bands ever!

        • Collin

It had a check lead singer, and guitarist and the rest were dudes... That ain't a chick band..

      • sgtguthrie

@sithdroid I'm already running it! Ask the devs... Voicemail bug is still there in 2.11.605.3!

      • skinien

Making changes to code and not changing the build number is a big no-no.

  • DoctorZaius68

Isn't there still a problem with using the FFC with Google Talk or is this just a problem on the rooted version?

    • http://gplus.to/mbk Michael

Nope, it's also inherent in this build.

  • SteveG

Now I'm waiting for Ice Creme Sandwich...oh wait. That won't happen until 2013...if ever.

  • RockingmyEvo3D

This is a classic example of how bad VERIZON really is in the update game. But I'm sure all the FANBOYS of there precious LTE network will enjoy this update. It pretty funny the same thing that makes you laugh also makes you cry. Live by the speed die by the speed that network is not compatible with all updates or processors for that matter.

  • miked

I haven't seen any dock customization in this either. Has anybody?

  • Havoc

There is no new Dock customization, Verizon screws up with their documentation as usual

  • miked

Ok, so I am gonna go out on a limb here and say this is NOT the OTA. I dont care about version numbers.... No VM notification and missing features that are clearly stated on the new spec sheet would open a major can of worms for vzw.

    • Brad

Didn't the last OTA sheet say that the app drawer would have tabs? They've done it before.

  • swoozie

    does this void warranty?

  • Collin

why doesn't everyone just root and call it a day? could of had GB months ago.

    • sgtguthrie

I for one have been rooted since day 1. I really only want the ota because of the kernel source they must release with it! That will make it possible to compile some kick ass kernels, which is something the Thunderbolt NEEDS! Right now they are either stock or based on the desire hd source...

  • Collin

Agreed and i totally forgot they were using the desire for source

  • Lewis

12:22 AM EDT - OTA update from big red loading on my T-Bolt. It's late and I'm sleepy and it is VZW so I could be dreaming...

  • TommyG

It's here! Just downloaded it both mine and my wife's. Damn Verizon -still can't remove the crapware...Too early to tell about the performance enhancements, but at least the wait is over!

  • Lewis

You know it's really kind of sad to think that the thrill of searching the forums for news of an update will be over...Now what'll I do at work all day :^|

  • jeremy

Just got my update downloading now!! Just when i'm bout to upgrade to the vigor or bionic. Happy it is coming though.

  • Lewis

1:00 AM EDT. Update complete T-Bolt's back in service. Now it's time to play!

  • frank

i dl it yesterday, first time running i had to pull battery???
it is running ok now, played around, and it doese'nt seem that different, scroll stops at the page, notification bar is a little different, not many new apps. we'll wait and see over the next few days, and report back.

  • Rania

wait...i'm really confused. IS the gingerbread 2.3 that's supposed to improve the battery life, phone's functionality, and etc out right now or is it STILL gonna roll out? i'm reading this and it's throwing me off! :/. someone please tell me! and what does RUU mean? and what is it supposed to do for the thunderbolt?

    • DeSaber

It was released and then pulled again. Apparently Ir had major issues. No new date released.
