Finally! After being limited to US users for the past 2 years, it looks like Google Voice may finally be opening up to the rest of the world. The Next Web has been informed by Jens Redmer, Google's European Director of Business Development, that "Google is currently 'dogfooding' its telephony service Google Voice in Europe ahead of a planned launch outside the US".

Google Voice is a telecommunications and VoIP service developed by Google that allows users (until now limited to residents in the US) to make domestic and international calls from their mobile phone, the Android and iPhone app, the web app, and/or by dialling their personal Google Voice number.

At the European Pirate Summit event in Germany, Redmer stated that Google was taking "concrete action" on bringing Google Voice to Europe. Unfortunately, Redmer was unable to give a precise date for when the service would be available. He did note that Google faced a number of challenges in launching a new telephony service as it would have to contend with technical as well as legal hurdles. Nevertheless, the service, according to The Next Web, is functional, if not widely available in Europe, and "most definitely" on Google's roadmap.

Hurry Google, there are about 6 billion odd people eagerly waiting for this launch.

Mate, I'm in Singapore! I hope Europe is merely the stepping stone, the test bed.

    • Mr_Nyx

      I, too, cry for Canada...

      • Mike

I use something called http://eonphone.com. Up in Canada. Not free, but it is unlimited and clearer than other apps.

Google Voice is ok. But spotty at times.

How is Google Voice a VoIP service?

It is not. People come to blogs like this for information. Please provide them with accurate facts.

    • Ashish

I'm pretty sure its VOIP when used through the browser, can it be anything else?

    • Donatom3

It is when you do it through Google talk or buy an obi100 to hook I up to a regular phone. I can answer and make calls from my cellnumber from any of those 3 methods.

      • JoAnn

Yes it is a Voip I just ordered the OBI 110 from Amazon. I've already disconnected my land line phone. Why pay $50 plus dollars when you can talk for free on Skype and now Google?? I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mustang

I still don't know why it's not available for Puerto Rico, a US territory.

    • MigFig

I don't think we'll get to use Google Voice here in PR any time soon.

      • Hector

I think it has to do with the Claro (PRTC) not allowing those services in PR or charging more $$$ fo VOIP termination fees.

    • Ben

You better stop hogging that gvoice cause cause I want it ;)

  • Drayon

How about Gvoice, G+, Gtalk all being integrated into each other in iCS?
If they would do that and add a worldwide release for Gvoice, then it would be awesome.

  • ML

Can you please do a story on why the Google Voice app does not work properly on the Nexus S 4G. There are problems with texts (in and out), recieving VMs, and the interface is shooty at best. Check out the market comments to see more.

I use it here in Brazil already! I always setup my google account to use english language, I don't know why but from time to time my account switches back to use portuguese language, and from sometime ago I already have acces to the 'Call Phone' option and this week I put some credit in my account and managed to call my wife! :)

Europe is not rest of the worl!

  • bunny

Not waiting. I no longer use any new Google services that are not rolled out worldwide at the same time... Oh, that includes EVERY new Google service... Well fuck those Xenophobic arseholes at Google!

I was considering creating content for GoogleTV. Google don’t even discuss content with global content creators… I am instead courting Facebook because they are going to be the biggest digital broadcaster, and they don’t care which country one is born in.

  • Richard Frost

Its 2013 - and I have not heard a peep about this.. looks like Google Voice global rollout got shelved.

  • Danny Holyoake

So.... Whatever happened to this? :(
