At the beginning of the month, HTC announced that it would be bringing Gingerbread to the Droid Incredible and ThunderBolt. While that promised has been fulfilled for the former, there's been nary a word of the status of the update for the latter. Until now.

Thanks to our anonymous tipster known only as Pig Benis, we have an official Gingerbread RUU hot of the presses for the HTC ThunderBolt.

Our tipster isn't positive if this is the final build or not, but considering it's so close to the end of the month, it is very likely.

Using this RUU will wipe all data on your device! Please make a backup of all sensitive data before proceeding. Similarly, you will lose root if you flash this. It is unclear right now whether or not this version is easily rootable. Proceed with caution!

As always, Android Police is not liable for any damage caused to your device if you choose to use this RUU.

Now, on to the fun stuff!

First things first -- you'll need the file. You can grab it right here. (Mirror) (MD5: c5dad342bc39a9ee556b80e4d0c26642)

Update: The original MD5 had a typo at the end. If you were getting a mismatch error, try it again.

Got it? Good. Follow these instructions in order to flash:

  • Rename the file to "PG05IMG.zip" (without quotes)
  • Drop it on the root of your SD Card
  • Turn off your device
  • Hold Volume Down + Power to reboot into the bootloader -- the file should automatically be detected and the flashing process will begin.
  • Wait for your device to complete the process and reboot

Congrats, you're now running Gingerbread on your TBolt!

Any changes since the last release, I wonder if there will be anything good the devs can pull out of it.

  • Anthony

    Lol at Pig Benis

    • ToyBox

LOL. I had to read it twice i thought it said something else!

  • Maith91

It has been out for along time :p http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?8136-RUU-Leak-2.07.605.0-Official-Gingerbread-for-the-HTC-Thunderbolt
,, but i'm not sure about yours might have camera issues :p

    • JoshL

That is very obviously not the same version as this leak.

    • Cameron Summerson

How is 2.07.605.0 the same as 2.11.605.2?

Even if you were referring to this build, then it's still older than ours.

You may find references to this build elsewhere, but you won't find a download, as one simple was not available before now.

See above. Learn how to check version numbers in their entirety before you accuse us of re-releasing old firmware.

  • Rash

    Maith is clearly a newfag

  • Maddog241

    I'm getting MD5 mismatch

    • SithDroid2187

Getting the same thing here. Going to try and redownload.

      • Maddog241

I tried it twice and mismatched both times. That makes me nervous.

        • Cameron Summerson

Sorry guys, that was my fault. When I pasted the MD5, I added a zero at the end. It should be all good now.

  • Drstrange462

How does one check the MD5?

    • Maddog241

Download from CNET I believe. Free tool to verify MD5 checksum. Basically validates the integrity of the data.

      • Drstrange462

        Thanks. I gots it now.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

      On Linux, just md5sum FILE.

I just double checked - the download matches.

  • BriskBillyMays

  • Maddog241

MD5 updated from original typo. Matches now !

  • Drstrange462

Has anyone installed this yet? Is it stable?

  • retard0101

should make the directions a bit more retard proof. you rename it "PG05IMG" took me a half an hour to figure that one out..... yes i am a retard

    • sgtguthrie

Then you probably shouldn't be flashing it... Just fyi. It really doesn't get any easier than that!

      • retard0101

lol....i know.... but it works well so far...we all have to learn somehow

        • sgtguthrie

Very true :-) I was just commenting on making the instructions more clear...lol. Glad you got it.

  • DD4000

When i dropped it to my SD it said couldnt drop my device wasnt connected or something??

  • Romieorock

Which UI is it using? Is it still 3.0?

    • sgtguthrie

Officially the thunderbolt has never had anything past sense 2.1. It never had 3.0. That was ported from other devices. I'm on BAMF Forever right now which is a 3.0 port. It is nearly flawless!

  • snap

Does anyone have this working? Happy or not with it?

  • retard0101

working for me! havent had any problems so far!

    • Romieorock

      Which UI does it have?

      • sgtguthrie

        Touchwiz...c'mon man!

  • gogogirl

my front facing camera will not work with google talk..

    • Romieorock

      Whicj UI does it have?

      • sgtguthrie

        Motoblur...c'mon man!

  • gogogirl

    im using htc sense 2.1

  • Randy

OMG!...the wait is finally over. I rooted this thing too. Pretty easy...use this guide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UK_CiB2SYk. It doesn't wipe data either! :D

    • snap

Ok, so you installed the GB update then rooted using the link you provided??

    • Drstrange462

What ROM did you put on it if any?

  • gogogirl

Anything yet on the Google talk why I can't switch to front facing camera?

    • Joe

Are you using a sense rom?

      • gogogirl

no im not rooted and on htc sense 2.1

  • Joe

If anyone would like, I took the RUU that Pig Benis(thank you) was nice enough to share and rooted it.

I have 2 versions, full RUU just rooted & other version is deodexed, rooted, zip aligned & all bloatware taken out. Plus both versions dont wipe your phone, just davlik wipe is all you need to do...

    Here is a link http://www.htcthunderbolt4g.com/htc-thunderbolt-custom-roms/gingerbreadrockv1-0-v1-1-(newest-gingerbread-leak)/

    • kevin

ok so instead of going to your website and getting yours i used the original and now i cant root it...... the revolution method isnt working for me and obviously the adb method doesnt work for this... any sugestions? i just wanted to try it out but now i want to get back to a root so i can swap it out. help please!

  • danno

hey there joe. thanks for doing this. question im running froyo stock on my tbolt no root.
so i could download your rooted version gb version to my sdcard, rename it, & then htboot, then flash that & come out with a get a rooted gb ?

then there are two radios a 3g & 4g. i would download both, rename the 3g file, hboot, flash. then rename the 4g radio file hboot, & flash that.

    is this the correct workflow?

    • joe

You could download and flash in recovery, you dont need hboot. It wont wipe the phone.
I recommend a davlik cache wipe at least. When I went from froyo, I did a full wipe but you dont have too.
Radios are listed there as well. You have to flash each one 3G & 4G. I will upload the combo zip (both radios together) later this evening. Radios need to be renamed to PG05IMG and flashed through hboot...

  • SteveG

Does anyone think this will be available OTA at some point? If so then I am going to wait.

    • joe

This is almost the final version, but from what I can say there is another build they are testing. So there is a good chance this wont be released if the other one being tested passes certification.

  • http://josephrpalmerphotos.com Joe

I never got the HTC Droid Incredible gingerbread update.. when was it suppose to have been released? still on 2.2 and my update screen says my software is up to date.

    • Tim

Only a few people got it as it had some bugs and they pulled it at the last minute. Sit tight another build is coming.

  • punydevil

Alright, so I did it and my data connectivity has been for s**t since. Any clues?

    • joe

Were you on froyo before? did you update the radios? Need more info to help...

      • punydevil

Think I may have solved my issue. Called 8778074646 and activated the SIM again (even though I never "deactivated" it) and it's flying now.

  • jonny

So yeah I don't like what they did with the app drawer. Also if you go to pick a live wallpaper, the little picture that they have showing what it would look like, shows the wallpaper but extremely magnified to the point where its pixelated. Also selecting a point where to type isn't reliable because it seems like it transfers to another point at will. This is definitely not the final version. I'm also experiencing data issues, and I was running on the last update that Verizon pushed out.

  • J67Jha

Will I still be able to receive the OTA update for my phone if I do this one and it turns out that this wasn't the final one?

  • E.R.Rider

Does any one know of this changes the kernel. I ask because I am still using an old kernel that has open myfy. I am curiouse if I can upgrade to gingerbread and keep my free myfy.

  • ademily87

I did it. Now won't play hd videos that the phone recorded or hd YouTube videos. Real choppy and can still hear audio. Other than that I love the improvements lol

Any way to go back to my original form?

  • http://bksdevelopment.com Buck$hot

Done. Works great so far. None of the above issues. Looked like there were some error messages early on during the flash process but it was fine. Just leave it running.

  • John

Please stop posting RUU when it is not.
An RUU is an exe and that is what I was looking for.
This is a RIP from an RUU.

    • jcase

      Hello John,
While technically you are (somewhat) correct, however HTC rarely distributes VERIZON firmware as EXEs, as Verizon requests it in zip format. This is effectively the same as an RUU, and is safer. There is less chance for a disturbance (and brick) during flashing, using it the zip format and flashing it off the sdcard.
If you see a newer Verizon firmware, as an EXE, it was an internal HTC thing.

While I can't speak for this leak, the previous leaks that came from me, came as a ZIP from HTC, and not as an EXE. They were not "ripped", they were never packed in the first place.

Stop bitching, if you "must have it" as an ruu, either repack it in an exe, or just use fastboot in ruu mode (which the RUU exe does).

  • David

I think my thunderbolt attempted to run a OTA update last night . It failed for some reason , probably because I left WiFi up all night . Should I assume it was the gingerbread update ? If so will it be sent again ? I cannot manually do it ?

    Thanks !

  • E.R.Rider

I ask again, does the os flash change the kernel? Also, I have tried to download with my phone, with no luck, I assume there is some sort of block that is stopping me.
Would like to get out of this os, as it is terrible when it comes to typing and word prediction.

    • sgtguthrie

Yes, it will change your kernel. I think the main reason nobody has answered you is that we know nothing about your situation. Rooted, or not? Stock MR2 froyo, or something newer? Out of what os? If you need details, we need details like these to help.

As for downloading to your phone, it should work fine. If it doesn't, it's probably your network connection. Try wifi if on 3G, and vise versa. JUST MAKE SURE YOU CHECK THE MD5SUM BEFORE FLASHING IT IN CASE YOU GET A BAD DOWNLOAD! You can use "android file verifier" (afv) from the market for free.

Good luck... Hope this was helpful :-)

      • sgtguthrie

Okay, by "myfy" are you referring to mobile Hotspot? If so, the kernel should not be your concern. If you're paying for Hotspot, it'll work. If not, it'll prompt you to pay to use it as the promotion ended. There is also a system app called tetheringguard.apk in thunderbolt gingerbread builds, so you either can't use tethering apps, or it reports it (I don't know exactly what it does, but can tell by the name it's bad if you want tethering). Just fyi...

        • E.R.Rider

The kernel update that vzw did in mar h that caused all the rebooting problems was not able to disstingquish between the hotspot and brower data on the phone. They have since fixed it with the update in july, but I did not update and as a result I have unlimitted hotspot.
This platform is new to me, so I am still figuring things out.
I have not rooted, as I have played the game before with BB and found that I spent more time frelling with things that it was not worth it.
I guess I will just have to wait untill some finds a work-a-round.

  • E.R.Rider

    Okaaaa! Thanks, or not.

  • Bugzsy

My 3g and 4g is not working? What do I do???

  • sa

Will gingerbread update have any effect on tethering via PDaNet?

  • MCRev31

The official Gingerbread update is now available!! Check your software update tool !:). Beeen runnin it all day and there is definitely a noticeable difference in how smooth the phone runs as well as a noticeable improvement in the battery life. I was tempted to update it using the leaked ones but am glad i waited. Enjoy!!
