Out of all the giveaway/contests we do here at AP, my favorites always end up being the creative kinds because they always leave us with long-lasting memories and give a chance to truly talented people who put in work into their entries. Such were the photo, the Twitter design, t-shirt design, and most recently the 404 page design giveaways (the last one being my favorite).

The Contest

It's now time to launch another creative giveaway because 1) everyone likes free stuff and 2) we need banners.

Good banners. Creative banners. Banners we won't be embarrassed to give our partners and fans to put on their sites. Banners that would turn heads. You get the idea.

The goal, as before, is simple: make them creative, compelling eye-catching, cool, fun, clean, and/or funny. There is only one design requirement (it needs to be clear it's for Android Police in some way) - so feel free to go nuts on this one.

Helpful Guidelines

Here are some other helpful guidelines:

  • Upload a clear, high-resolution picture of your design to imgur.com and post a link to it in the comments (please use your actual e-mail in the comment form so that we can contact you). Please preserve your original file, as well (whatever the format may be - though we prefer PSD).
  • You can submit as many entries as you like - within reason.
  • As our logos, site elements, and fonts are subject to change (who knows - maybe we'll get a redesign one day), please try to avoid using existing artwork and make designs entirely original.
  • You may or may not include our slogan (Looking After All Things Android) or other phrases - it's entirely up to you.
  • The standard IAB sizes we are looking for are:
    • 125x125 square button
    • 300x250 medium rectangle
    • 300x100 3:1 rectangle
    • 468x60 full banner
    • 728x90 leaderboard -- preferred initial entry size
    • 160x600 skyscraper
  • You can enter with only one banner size, but if you submit extra sizes, they'll count as bonus points for your entry. If you submit all sizes (and your design rocks), you will get mega-uber brownie points, but to avoid potential time loss I would encourage to wait before submitting all sizes until you get some form of thumbs up from us via positive comments after we see your initial submission.
  • The grand prize winner must submit his or her design in all banner sizes we are looking for (as listed above), together with the PSD containing said designs before the prize is shipped.
  • You may only include clipart, photos, or other graphics which you have either created yourself, or those which fall under a Creative Commons License. We will not accept any entry that contains a copyrighted image or work. We are serious about plagiarism, and if we find you've used an image without permission, your entry will be disqualified until the offending material is removed - we have to do this because we've gotten submissions with material that was simply stolen before and don't want it to happen again.
  • Please do not submit an entry that uses a photo as its primary feature - it's a design contest, not a photo shoot.

So, what will the best submission get in return?

The Prize

As for our prize this time around, it's going to be the recently released Honeycomb Android tablet from Lenovo - the 32GB IdeaPad K1. You guys still like tablets, right?

Because the IdeaPad K1 will work anywhere, unlike the G2x in the previous contest, the contest is hereby open to all our usual international countries - not just U.S. (see the detailed list in the terms below).

image

The IdeaPad K1 is powered by the awesome dual-core Tegra 2 processor and sports the following specs:

  • 10.1 1280x800 display
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB on-board storage; SD Card slot
  • MicroHDMI
  • WiFi
  • Optional 3G (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint)
  • 5MP rear camera; 2MP front
  • Android 3.1

Because the tablet is powered by a Tegra 2 chip, you'll definitely want to check out NVIDIA's Tegra Zone site and Android app which feature awesome Tegra-optimized games you can install on this bad boy (big shout-out to NVIDIA for their sponsorship!).

Terms

This contest is now over. We have selected the winner - see if it's you here.

The contest will run until 11:59 p.m. September 18th, 2011 - a little over one week from today to give you plenty of time to prepare.

The winner will be chosen by the Android Police staff sometime after the contest end date. The winner will be decided based upon the quality, creativity, and originality of their submission - there will be no "random" decisions. Please remember this contest is judged on a totally subjective basis - we don't want any hurt feelings.

The winner will be required to permanently relinquish all interest in, rights to, and ownership of their submission to AndroidPolice.com as a condition for acceptance of the prize.

The contest is open to residents of the countries specified in the detailed terms and conditions below (not just U.S. - check the list to see if your country is there).

Multiple submissions are allowed within reason.

Again, please use your actual e-mail address in the comment form when making your submission.

NVIDIA and Android Police will ship the prize to the winner.

See the "Official Rules" below for the exact terms of the contest and eligibility requirements.

International entrants: Please ensure your country is listed in "1. Eligibility" of the Official Rules, and particularly remember that you will be responsible for any and all import duties, fees, taxes, or other costs (excluding the shipping carrier charge) associated with importing the device into your country, as indicated in "4. Prizes"

And now, show off your skills and good luck, everyone!

    No Argentina??? why not??
I think I'll submit something anyway....just for fun

  • Phil Oakley/redbullcat

    I'm a dab hand at graphic design...gonna enter :)

  • mskks64

Totally in! now to start designing!

  • Robert

Does it have to be in PSD? Because I thought of an animated SWF or a simple GIF...

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

No, it doesn't have to be a PSD, but what we do need is the original in case we need to modify something (whatever the original may be in this case).

      • Erik I Graul

what do u mean by original??? I'm using macromedia flash professional 8... Would u need the .fla file???... http://i.imgur.com/9NmS7.png

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Sure, if that's what you used to create and export the design.

      • Erik I Graul

So what do u think of my work? Is there anything I should do different? Any better ideas for me? The link is In my comment above this one

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I like the 3D character, but the rest is kind of all over the place. The blend between the left and right parts, the wallpaper repeated Androids, vertically uncentered letters, blurry logo between them, the font and black/white lettering - I think all those need work. That's my honest opinion.

  • Robert

What are the banners supposed to be about or advertise? Android Police in general?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It's supposed to advertise Android Police in general - basically compel users to click on it on other sites to check out AP.

  • SDL

I took a crack at it. I just happened to have PS open when I saw this. Well, here goes nothing:

Wow thats fantastic, can we use 3d to desing a banner

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

You can use whatever you want, as long as the end result looks great.

Great entry, and with all the sizes right away!

    • Kiran

      WOW! Looks great man! :-)

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Now I have to ask - the sizes are all kind of weird and non-standard. Is that on purpose?

      • http://imgur.com/a/5qg3V AC

I exported high resolution which turned out really big. The dimensions should be correct though which would make it easy to re-export to the correct size. I think by default it got exported as 300dpi. I'll re-export as 72dpi and resubmit.

    • Jason Rossicoe

This is the best one so far hands down. Great job!

One thing I want to point out right away - this is not a site header, so those Twitter/FB/etc icons shouldn't be there.

      • A1a3a1

Okay. That is an easy fix. I will upload the updated images later tonight. Any other c&c is welcome.

Here's my go at it: http://imgur.com/a/giODd. Just a couple sizes for now.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Nice - are these all original designs? The left side is awesome - the slogan font could use some work, but otherwise - great entry.

      • http://www.brainerddesign.com Christy

Thank you so much for the positive feedback. Yes, the designs are original. Can you give me any direction on the slogan font? Are you looking for something that matches the logo font more closely?

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Not necessarily - but compared to the mastery on the left, it looks way too plain to me. Don't be afraid to experiment, or even do something completely radical and intriguing and have them occupy the whole width, intriguing anyone who sees them, with maybe a subtle reference to AP. Think outside the box :)

  • Kiran

Here's my one, just a try, plz comment!
    http://imgur.com/BfWXS

  • darraughbj

Here's what I made up real quick, partially inspired by the new white phones?

    http://darraughbj.imgur.com/android_police_contest

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It's not bad, but it's a little too simple. The Android mascot, for example, is completely unchanged (contrast this with http://imgur.com/a/giODd above, for example), and the red and blue contrast too much in my opinion.

  • http://gplus.to/attilacsapo Attila Csapo

    http://imgur.com/a/6O7Ec

I was going for a clean, subtle, minimalist look, and kind of managed to hit an impass in the process. I'm not sure, wich version should I enter to the competition.

I for one like the one with the lights, but without the droids. I don't think the droids would look really good in the other necessary resolutions, no matter how I'd try to rearrange/resize them.

I'd like to make the other sizes too,
(before the time runs out :P ), but not sure, wich version to go with. Any ideas? :)

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I like the 2nd design with little Androids, but the 3D letters are too 1999 for the current modern design standards, or at least my taste.

As for the lights, to me they look too girly/bubbly.

  • Daniel

I add Earth, is it good now?
    http://imgur.com/dElis

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I appreciate the effort you've put into the design, but to me, the banner doesn't really explain what it's about and doesn't invite me to click on it. It's more like a nice piece of wall art at a grocery store that you enjoy once you get into the store than a banner you expect to see before you come in.

  • A1a3a1

Updated without the social media icons...but added some subtle details. The image on the phone is a screenshot of androidpolice.com [if you were wondering].

Here's my first take. Thoughts? http://imgur.com/0meOE

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I like the custom Android character, but the rest is way overdone IMO. Too busy, too much blue and red (please don't fixate on those), and the colors don't contrast well.

      • George Anderson

Thanks for the feedback. Let me see what I can do.

      • Erik I Graul

Can we put in more the one design and have a chance of winning with it? Or is are first entry the only one that counts? Just to be sure of the rules. I want to do more. But dont want to use more of my time doing another one if it wont count...

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

      Looks nice. A few suggestions:
      - try to stay away from Apple references, they're kind of overdone now, maybe change that guy to be more like a cop on the job, while keeping the right side more like a cop on vacation having fun
      - the font in the middle is a bit too plain - perhaps you can use a different one? AP's current font is called XSCALE http://www.dafont.com/xscale.font

And I have to ask just to double check - is this all original design?

      • hsigmond

Thanks for the tips and suggestions Artem:)

I like the ide of work/vacation... back to sketching:)

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Great work on the changes! I recommend just getting rid of the plain-looking url altogether and maybe making the slogan a little larger.

Much better, though I'm not digging the glow - red and blue don't play well with green like that.

      • George Anderson

When I get back to my computer, I'm going to change the green text to white. Also, the glow was supposed to be more splatter/smear. I uploaded the wrong one. Will repost this evening.

Great entry, and in all sizes too! (You've got a misprint in the url on "AndroidePolice")

Perhaps remove the url (the title is enough) and see if you could match our font (http://www.dafont.com/xscale.font)?

I must say, your design looks most cohesive out of all I've seen so far, especially the square buttons.

      • Haim ifrah

        Thanks!
I will change the font and fix the typo.
( removing the URL will be easy later)

I can also change the illustration details if needed.

Nice, you've got some great ideas, but they're tarnished by the background and font/text. Also, some of the elements are blurry, which takes away from the experience.

    To the site owners:

I'm wondering, would there be any problem using the tagline "#1 Authority on Android" ?

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

No, sounds good, though our original tagline would be good too.

      • Robert

No doubt the original is great but I just wanted to try something different a slightly shorter. It's just a tagline line in the end, so it can always be reverted easily.

        Thanks

I like this one looks neat.It has an edge on it thats makes it look sharp and clean. Not too messy with too much but just enough in the banner too get the point across.

I would vote for you if i have a choice.Im sure there are loads more too come but i would def have you in my top 3 at the moment.

      • poke50uk

I tried to warn you.. but theres another website called androidauthority that has a VERY VERY similar logo

        • http://ingenoid.es Aldo Castorena

The only similarity that I see are de glasses (with the exception that they are both the android mascot), but if there is an issue I can alter the design.

          Thanks for the reference.

Hmm, not sure how I feel about it. It's not bad (definitely not as good designs here), but it's not mind blowing either. A bit too dark, too busy, and compared to some designs with custom characters, the inanimate/still character on this banner doesn't reach those, admittedly high, levels already set by the other good submissions here.

      • M

Thanks, I thought it might be a little dark, but it was a test. Now I kind of know which direction to go in.

        • M

I have not really had any free time to do anything serious but I did have this mock up that I thought I would throw up here for fun.

here my the design with the requested changes.

Looking good - not a fan of that URL still, it's not necessary at all but as you said, easily removed.

  • Richard Horsley

OK, so I decided to go for a waaay different look :P Not sure if people will like this, but it tickled my fancy, so here is my Film Noir - "The Case of the Green Droid!" - Hope you enjoy :)

Whole album is an array of the banner sizes, as well as some working images:

      That's awesome! I like this a lot.

      • Richard Horsley

Thanks for the comments Artem and Tim! Now that I know people quite like this, I will finish all of the banner sizes (hopefully before the competition ends :P) Anyone got any suggestions for improvement? Or just stick with the theme as it is? Thanks!

        Rich

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

I have a question on the color - he seems dimmer and less green than in the original - is that on purpose to match the theme/lighting?

        • Richard Horsley

Yup! Originally I had him in black and white, but I felt that it was too bland overall, so I added his colour back but washed-out. I was shooting for an effect similar to the "Girl in the Red Coat" (http://goo.gl/uOomu) with a small amount of colour to hi-light "Detective Droid" (Yea! That's his name! :P). Fully coloured in looks too much vs. the rest of the theme in my opinion, but I'm willing to experiment if you have any suggestions!
          Richard

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

OK, thought that's what was going on. I think it looks good.

    • Tim H

I think you have the best design so far. Awesome work bud.

    • Richard Horsley

      Comments are welcome!

      Rich

      • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

It has been brought to my attention that the crossed arms make it look like AndroidCentral's and AndroidAuthority's character. :(

        • Richard Horsley

Just checked this, and the Android Authority character indeed has his arms crossed, but that's the ONLY similarity? Other than the fact that he's a green Android? The Android Central's character has his arms crossed too? So can nobody else use a droid with crossed arms?

          Rich

        • poke50uk

I think its the colours, the tone of Green is very similar

The stance for both does look a bit similar - but if you make him a bit darker, you may get away with it

Your's isn't the only one here looking similar! I've been trying to warn people..

        • Richard Horsley

In my opinion, the stance is very different, also there's a limited scope for the green as that's the colour of the actual Android logo.

          Rich

        • Richard Horsley

I was planning on changing his arms this weekend, but unfortunately have not had time, so I will not be able to make this change before the competition ends. However, the stance of the droid and everything else in this image I feel is completely different from either of the other two "droids", he is dozing on a lamp-post, any arm configuration other than this will detract form the effect.

If this reflects poorly on the design then this is unfortunate, but I feel that changing it for changes sake would lose the effect.

          Rich

      • http://www.twitter.com/robertmoreno Robert

That's some pretty good shading there. Did you use a Wacom for it?

Submitting an initial entry; I will add the other sizes through the day.

By the end of the day, these banners will show four characters depicted in an orderless stream of situations as the police try to find a wanted "Mystery Device". In a discoverable tale of thrilling chases and beautiful Androidettes, the complete set of banners won't just advertise AndroidPolice, but also tell a story.

3rd take at the lettering... Any feed back would be great... http://i.imgur.com/vEOKy.png

The original lettering was the better than the resubmissions. The font in the resubmits are too bland.

Considering Artem brought up the XScale font they currently use "AP's current font is called XSCALE http://www.dafont.com/xscale.font" I would post one with that (or a similar) font.

Love the right side as is.

and without the glare on photos:
    http://i.imgur.com/bOZ8Q.jpg

Blue color and hexagons should suggest Honeycomb; the logo resembles military/police "shoulder band"; photos of android-like criminals - I'm sure they have to do sth with the "android police"... :) I think more explanations are not necessary.

I tried to keep up with the latest google design standards - the logo and solid-color background should resemble their new (more... "flat"?) design (in gmail for example).

I won't do all other sizes today, it's getting pretty late (currently 22:09 in Poland :)).

    Please rate and comment! :)

      Too late to edit...
http://i.imgur.com/JOBEf.jpg that was the correct coloristic version :)

Really like the chevron/Android insignia. If they go with someone else's work, it would be a great avatar or something for you.

  • hoozgo

I've checked all of these and I think that this one is the best one. It's funny and let's see - there is a lot of details.
I also like the theme made by AC :)

i haven't got any time at the moment but i thought of something like a big nexus s with on the screen a game with an android police catching a criminal our something

  • Michal

I hope they will at least make you smile :) The first one was inspired purely by the shape of android's head, and when I was looking at it when it was finished, some H.R. Giger neuron in my brain woke up and together they formed into the idea for the second one.
Android's head in the first banner is from a Creative Commons licensed image which I love (I guess I could make my own if that's not ok, but sadly it's too late to find out...), but (excluding the little android guy in background) the second one is entirely mine :)

Really like the sketched up one. You could use a sketched up version of the bullet one in the square formats to complete the set.

This is pretty awesome, except I'd prefer proper capitalization.

      • Michal

I like the neutral look of uncapitalized letters, though after giving it a shot, I must admit that the strong and static look of 'A' and 'P' go very well with otherwise dynamic surroundings http://imgur.com/ZFRn0 :)
