From the beginning, Android users have been trying to guess what's in store for the OS, even down to what the next version will be called. While many have speculated on what Ice Cream Sandwich's successor will be named, This is my Next reported today that a "trusted source" revealed that the next version of Android will in fact be called Jelly Bean.

As usual we have no idea what version number this will be, but the source also divulged that "game-changing" features will be integrated into Jelly Bean, some of which were initially meant for Ice Cream Sandwich.

As it stands, we have very little to go on regarding Ice Cream Sandwich, so it definitely feels a bit early to begin thinking about Jelly Bean - but with today's story, the speculation can officially begin.

Update: This Is My Next has just reported that another "well-regarded" source chimed in today to calm concerns over the game-changing features supposedly left out of Ice Cream Sandwich in favor of Jelly Bean. The source says first of all that Jelly Bean is simply "in the running" as the name of the next Android OS because there are honestly just a few sensible dessert names starting with 'J' (personally I'm rooting for Jawbreaker). The source also indicates that Ice Cream Sandwich will still be a major release, bringing several fundamental changes and improvements with it, and not just a slightly tweaked re-hash of Android 2.x.

Check out the original story at This is my Next.

  • Zac

They name them after dessert items I wouldn't think of jelly beans as a dessert.

    • Vince

I hardly think of eclairs as desert but they still went ahead with that. Just relax and enjoy the ride...

      • Matthew

I just had eclairs for desert :P

      • Dss

Then you are slow.. eclairs are desserts. But Honeycomb isn't a dessert. Donuts aren't dessert. The trend is "sweets" not necessarily desserts.

        • PacoBell

Pfft! I've had both honeycomb and donuts for desserts...and they were DELICIOUS! People need to be more adventurous, I say.

        • doug

hey are desserts for poor people. Trust me, I know first hand. You haven't lived till you have had rice krispie treats with nutella. Ghetto to the max.

  • Tkun

Ha, this makes me feel less excited for Ice Cream Sandwich now.

    • geohottz

lmao..... Me too Im so pissed now

      • Vince

geohotz, geohotz....why does that name sound familiar? You're usually found on the G2 xda forums, right?

        • Hal Motley

The real Geohotz got sued by Sony and jailbreaks iOS. Hey, Geohotz when is iOS 5 untethered going to be released?

I wonder what will be the sweet food beginning with 'K' will be!

  • gaijinboricua

I keep on reading about these game changing features. Each android version changes the game a lot! Ice cream sandwich looks like will do everything a person needs and more. What will Jelly bean do? Turn water to wine and multiply fish?

    • Jeff

While apple fans still get excited about folders

      • Carlos

        And notifications :D

        • Anti-Apple

And different color phones.... HOLY CRAP A WHITE IPHONE!!!!

  • Deltaechoe

I am still waiting for Android to make me eggs. Anyway, on topic, I wonder if this is the same trusted source that was making guesses at the new name over at the mobile news sites.

  • steve

    Maybe they bought WebOS? ;-)

  • Noel

Android will always be on the march...there will always be improvements and a few game changing features integrated to each release.

  • skitchbeatz

If for some reason this was true I wish they would just delay ICS until they got it right. But thats selfish of me. My upgrade date isn't until April.

  • Tommy

They updated their post about ICS, ICS will still be a major update.

  • Brandon

I speculate that the version after Jelly Bean will be named Key Lime Pie!

    • Jaymoon

      Why stop at Key Lime?

      Lemon Meringue
      Mint Chocolate Chip
      Neapolitan
      Orange Cream
      Pistachio
      Quiche
      Ruhbarb Pie
      Strawberry Short Cake
      Triple Chocolate
      Upside Down Cake
      Vanilla Bean
      Whipped Cream
      X-tra Fudge
      Yellow Cake
      Zucchini Bread

      • http://www.podoco.net zach

        oh god, quiche?
android would be the laughing stock of the playground

        • Hal Motley

          I though Quiche was savoury.

      • Chriskin

S just HAS to be called Space Cake

  • ocdtrekkie

It just makes me wonder what is getting left out of ICS? Are we going to get another "this is just a phone or just a tablet" OS? Are we still going to have separate APKs for tablet and phone apps like we have now for many Google apps?

  • J Rush

Android Ice Cream Cake! Now that would be a treat!

  • Jim

    WHERE'S MY JELLY BEAN GOOGLE!!!!

sorry...people will start saying that eventually

  • JayMonster

At this point, this is much ado about nothing. We don't even know what "game changing feature" may be held back. It may ne nothing we have even heard of yet. Just the melding of Gingerbread and Honeycomb is a huge step forward, and more than enough for the ICS build, so if it is a question of holding back the OS or moving some other feature back until it is fully baked, then hold that feature back for now and get a stable ICS out to market.

    • Zomby2D

Yes. There's always gonna be some new feature that won't make it in every version because it's just not ready yet. If they waited to cram every idea in, nothing would ever get released.

  • Brian

It's not named after desserts it's named after something sweet. Just like Android is sweet compared to Crapples Io-mess.

  • SK

ICS better not be as fuckin' trivial as Froyo to Gingerbread. Gingebread hardly makes a difference for an end user! I had my G2 updated from Froyo to Gingerbread and I see no difference than the trivial changes to the UI. Sure, nicer cursor control for selection, etc, but no great features!

    • PacoBell

Concurrent garbage collection? I'd upgrade for that reason alone!

  • _Tetragrammaton

Maybe k will be kool-aid, 'cause that's what you motherfuckers are drinking.

  • http://royblumenthal.com Roy Blumenthal

Maybe after Android releases XANTHUM GUM, followed by YOGHURT SURPRISE, and then ZOO BISCUIT, they'll go full circle. Start at the beginning of the alphabet again, and release APPLE CRUMBLE.

    • Hal Motley

      +1 for Apple Crumble!

  • L boogie

Maybe they would also try shortbread, shortcake, cheesecake, bubble gum, cookies n cream etc.... would like to know ICS' entire portfolio first before wondering what the future successor would bring to the table.

  • randy

Although i'm in Asia, i've heard Jaffa Cakes are quite nice...

  • http://techeomania.blogspot.com/ Techeomania IN

Surely this Jelly Bean version is going come up with many new features.
For more info check out http://techeomania.blogspot.com/2011/09/just-in-android-jelly-beans-to-follow.html

  • http://electrojelly.wordpress.com Emmanuel

That makes sense. Ice Cream Sandwich will unite Honeycomb and Gingerbread and help both users and developers to get used to the new platform. After this follows Jellybean with the real changes.

    ICS: Foundation.
    Jellybean: building.
