Download: Android Market v3.1.3 (mirror) (for all devices - does not require root, but you do need to enable 'Unknown Sources' in the Settings-> Applications menu.)

The Market update in this post is meant for phones only - there is no known update to the Honeycomb tablet Market at the moment.

Wow, Google is on a roll with the Android Market lately. Since the release of Market v3.0, a number of small updates have come to the Android Market recently, but this is by far the biggest yet. Google has added the long-awaited +1 functionality to the Android Market (which has been on the web version of the Market for quite some time), along with a few other goodies.

There's a brand-new settings menu, as well as click-to-read explanations of app permissions (not developer customizable, unfortunately).

There are also 2 brand-new Market icons to spruce things up a bit (within the Market itself - unfortunately, the app drawer icon is still the same).

For convenience's sake, the size in megabytes of each app, along with its latest update date, have been moved from the bottom of descriptions to the top of individual app pages, which is a very useful change in our book.

Moving on to the thumbnail navigator, Google added a long-overdue sliding transition - a nice touch that makes the Market feel more polished.

Oh, and did we mention you can now use an optional custom PIN for purchases on your phone, instead of leaving your Google Checkout wide open for anyone that picks up your device? If you have kids, or your phone is stolen, this is one awesome feature to have - and really, it makes a lot of sense.

You can get the new Market .apk here (mirror), root access is not required, but you'll need Unknown Sources enabled in the Settings -> Applications menu to install it.

Thanks, Patrick! (@Tiemsch)

  • Sweet update - especially the pin lock.

    • Actually my favorite part is that they now have the app size at the very top instead of hidden under the Description paragraphs.

  • Does this update work for tablets too? Or is that a different version entirely?

  • The Market feels a lot faster and smoother now on my Galaxy S2. Now it's really better than the old one.

  • Is Market enabler working with this?
    appreciate an answer.

  • Have they fixed the Facebook share bug that posts the wrong image to Facebook?

  • ARGH, I have a Dell Streak 5, which is by default always in landscape - and the market's landscape layout just SUCKS!
    3.0 was way better.

  • Market is niceeee

  • mastermind26 says:

    NICE!

    Feels smooth and clean!

  • wow, I still haven't received the V3.0 android market on my phone. If I download the APK, will it have any disadvantages? I'm wondering if I should download it or just wait for the actual OTA download.

    • No, it won't make a difference. I didn't get 3.0 pushed to me either but have no problems with this.

    • Man, what are you waiting for... no disadvantages, no reason to wait for automatic update....! Old market sucks!

  • Loving this new market very fast and makes more sense. Thanks google :)

  • Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_ALREADY_EXISTS] ... I guess you need root access after all.

  • Ted Lovejoy says:

Hm. Will not install on D1 CM 6.1.2...

  • Woot! They returned the 'disable notifications' option they ripped out of the previous version!

  • chris ponciano says:

no QR code for the download?

  • So why exactly would I have to allow unknown sources for a google update? And why should I trust a google update coming from a Costa Rica domain? This smells very fishy.

    • Christopher says:

All APKs are equal -- installing from outside of the Market is untrusted. Hence you have to enable "Unknown Sources" -- Google proprietary apps aren't magic somehow.

You don't have to trust the APK linked here, but I would be astounded if someone managed to create a malware version of the Android Market that just happens to have the same signing key as prior versions of the Market..

    • As Christopher said, you need that option enabled to install any APK outside the Market, doesn't matter what it is.

And the lts.cr domain is a shorturl for letscrate.com - our file distribution service of choice (we have a premium account that allows posting direct links and avoid all the ad spam on other sites, like megaupload).

  • I just checked and my current Market version is 2.3.4
Shouldn't it update by itself on restart?
    Downloading now...

    • Wow, some change! ANd definitely for the much, much better :)

    • I'm stuck with 2.3.4 too. Can anyone explain why some devices get updated and others not?

Is it a matter of device, are the updates first pushed only to selected regions?

      Desire Z - Switzerland

...and no, I don't want to update it with a apk found somewhere on the net, is there a way to force the update?

  • why won't it install on my koby kyros? I've already got a previous ver of the market running fine.
The apk doesn't offer an 'install' button in file manager...

    • Did you remember this?
"but you'll need Unknown Sources enabled in the Settings -> Applications menu to install it."

Also, if you're running any Android version older than 2.2 I don't think it'll work.

  • Christopher says:

    Thanks for the download link.

But I would like the new Market more if not for the UX regressions. I can no longer open the app and immediately start a search by typing. First I have to press the Search button or icon.

Secondly, the app details page resets itself every time a download or install event occurs. Try starting an app download, then expand the description or comments to read through them. Once the download or install starts (or ends), the UI state will be unnecessarily reset.
This appears to have become worse in 3.1.3.

Finally, despite two redesigns, still it takes ages to load an app's details. When opening an app's details, the Market *knows* the app and developer name plus its ratings etc, because you just clicked on it, yet they don't bother showing that header until after all the details are loading -- you just see yet another huge empty space with a generic "Loading" spinner.

On the plus side, they fixed pressing the "home" icon while already on the home page which did an unnecessary refresh of all the content and images.

    • I have beef with the Search issue as well - I used to just press the hardware search button without waiting for any screens, but the redesigned Market makes you wait a bit.

Same for the My Apps menu option - that only shows up after it's done with some initial loading.

      Annoying.

  • Getting parsing error...anyone else?

  • This got pushed to my phone automatically just now.
Most (all?) problems seem to be fixed! At least for the SGS!

Fixed (for me): lag sliding between screens, missing market/download links to apps I have installed, stuck downloads, large app downloads

I don't seem to have the app details loading problem someone else reported. :)

    Woooh!

  • You would be an idiot to install a random copy of Market on your phone. How do you know it doesn't have a malware inside it or say conveniently chooses not display all the permissions required by Apps written by a specific author?

  • I think it's best that the developers aren't allowed to put in the permissions and it's Google programmers who oversee that: if not, malware producers would have a lot easier time with users and saying that it only accesses your Contacts book or something to that affect.

  • I can't figure out who is using this +1 thing and why Google feels the need to add it to everything.

  • does this work on android 2.1?

  • Another bonus is this new market seems to recognize what apps you installed from Amazon and no longer says you need to update them (then decline the update since it is an Amazon App). Was driving me nuts telling me I needed to update the same 4 apps everyday.
On a side note...Amazon does a crap job of updating apps you have "purchased" from them...and by purchased I mean downloaded the free app of the day...lol.

    • Same seems to be the case for off-market installs, for example from GetJar, which makes me wonder whether this technique inadvertently allows injecting and updating pirated apps in the Market.

  • Thanks for the update and link.

  • The apk works just fine on my unrooted GT10.1 and if I'm not mistaken it seems that it recognizes that it's a tablet. I get a page in the app section for "Staff picks for tablets" which isn't on the phone install. Overall I love the UI redesign but now I have 2 market icons in my app draw (smh).

  • Like the look & changes but hate the update simply because it has rendered my phone unusable due to already dwindling memory, the update won't stay installed either.

  • I got the OTA update. motorola defy(froyo)- croatia. I guess i'm the lucky one

  • AHH! My market updated itself to this tonight and killed the market. It now gives the "The application Market (process com.android.vending) has stopped unexpectedly." error after a few seconds of the market being open. Deleting cache and uninstalling the update didn't work. I used Titanium Backup to rever to the old backed up version, and it auto-updated immediately. Once I did that again and froze the updater I THOUGHT it worked, but I wasn't able to download anything. Apparently I need this update, but it's broken. Even downloading the one off this site didn't help. Any suggestions? Desire HD running the latest CM7 stable.

  • Contrary to the note at the top, I was able to install this on my Acer Iconia without a problem.

  • hola a todos soy de México y quisiera saber como puedo instalar esta nueva versión y si es compatible con mi x10mini o tengo que esperar a que se actualice automáticamente en mi cel?

  • when is going to arrive to the xperia play

  • Mohamed Samir Ismail says:

  • upadated of its own after a switch off..
    awesome..n work faster..
everything on one single page..n so smooth..takes time for first boot..then works v. smooth..
    +1

  • Funciona perfectamente

    Gracias

    España

  • Thanks for the Link. The download works fine and new Market is definitely better.
The only downside I found is the fact that I get 'Connection Failed Retry' message very often. It is kinda annoying, not sure why its happening. Its not that my data connection is slow/interrupted or anything.

  • This version of market doesnt show the version of the app that i am about to download......
    or does it??

  • Would anyone happen to know when this will be available for the Infuse 4g? Thanks!!

  • Help! I got this version through automatic update but I don’t have the +1 button and the Movies and Books category. My device is a Galaxy Tab P1010 I live in the Philippines. Is the +1 button and the movies etc category US exclusive?

  • Several months ago, after a successful factory reset, an older version of market was installed.
Frustratingly I spent many hours with AT&T, HTC, & Google to no avail.
Today I downloaded market 3.4.4 from your website and in seconds had the latest version.
Thanks so much for the info. I have bookmarked your site.
    Gratefully,
