Last week, an HTC support representative told a customer that the Droid Incredible would not be updated to Gingerbread. Of course, we questioned this claim's validity, as we were absolutely certain that there was a test build on Verizon's servers at the time the statement was issued.

Turns out we were right, as the official update page is now live on Big Red's website. This is pretty good news for Incredible owners -- but the better news is that it's probably coming sooner than you think; possibly as early as this week.

Lets have a look at the changelog:

  • Gingerbread -- and all the added enhancements that go along with it
  • MMS Messages send correctly
  • Successfully play audio files from a message
  • Send Vcard through SMS
  • Internet connections via Bluetooth now enabled
  • VZ Navigator now operates over Wi-Fi
  • Change songs in the Music widget by tapping the forward button
  • Camera functions successfully without inserting SD card

As you can see, aside from all of the added benefits of Gingerbread, this update also brings several bug-fixes to the Incredible.

There's no official word on when this update will start rolling out, but we'll make sure to keep you updated as new info arises.

(sigh) And what about the Thunderbolt, HTC? HMMM?

My Desire has the HTC Gingerbread ROM on it and it's much faster than Froyo, the only downside is the lack of Sense 3.0 but that's due to the limited internal storage.

can you get the update when rooted? and if not how do i unroot it?

    • Alan

You can update while rooted, I did on my Desire. You need to be aware though, that you will be unable to root afterwards as there is no way of rooting the HTC version of Gingerbread at the moment.

I was told you cannot get the OTA while rooted

Why do HTC representatives purposely lie to a customer about updates that are going to be rolling out in a few weeks or few months. I know they are probably told to most likely from their superiors but that is just wrong to do and bad business practice if you were to ask me. Would it not make better sense and stronger customer appreciation if HTC were to actually tell the truth and tell the customer there is an update coming out. I would at least suspect HTC would say something like the Gingerbread update will be out before the end of time or maybe a little sooner than that before 2018 ends instead of denying such an update exists at all when it in fact does. What if the word spread to the Incredible community they weren't getting Gingerbread sure a lot of folks would have cared but kept supporting HTC but other folks would care more and take HTC off their friends list and say hello Moto or Samsung.

Finally! Wonder what took so long? My DInc has been a great phone for over a year now, and no complaints with it, but I'm afraid HTC's OTA Gingerbread update may not arrive before I upgrade to 4G and the Moto Droid Bionic in a few weeks. Progress waits on no one...
