So here's a bit of Monday afternoon good news for anyone with the LG G-Slate: according to the LG Forums, Android 3.1 should start rolling out to the 8.9 inch tablet today or tomorrow. In a thread full of complaints about the bugginess of the G-Slate, LG Product Pro, a forum moderator, dropped in to spread some good news to the disgruntled users:

2011-08-08 16h17_01

We've yet to receive any reports from users that the update has actually hit their device, but this is still good news. We'll make sure to keep you posted as more info arises.

Yep, no problem. I'm glad to finally hear some good news. I'm manually forcing update checks lol! Can't wait!

  • Deez1234

Excellent news considering LG's horrible customer support!

  • http://www.christiantechsaz.com/ Aaron

You manually check for the update:

    1. Install Anycut
    2. New Shortcut
    3. Activity
    4. Hidden Menu (There are a gazillion entries for this, pick the 2ND one.
    5. Scroll all the way to the bottom and select OTA Update Test
    6. Google OTA Update Server Check-in
    7. Run the other tests to see if it's available for you yet.

    :D :) ;)

Isn't this like being excited over an update to Froyo when Gingerbread has been out for almost a year? For being a Google Experience device, I'm curious why LG 1) took so long to update their tablet to 3.1, and 2) what's custom in their ROM other than the 3D camera or any other 3D software that prevented them from putting out 3.2 instead?

If update frequency is what you're after, it doesn't seem like LG is the way to go.

    • Aaron (different Aaron)

Maybe LG doesn't want to release a buggy OS, so they took a little time to make sure it's fully ready.
As for you comment of Froyo vs Gingerbread and waiting a year, the G-Slate just came out in May. Thats 3 months ago. 3.1 was pushed to other devices 3 weeks ago. Quit your complaining about your NOT GUARANTEED update and accept it already!

      • http://www.btechpcrepair.com B-TECH

LG promised 18 months of updates. Is a promise not a guarantee?

      • hldc1

Not complaining, but if you would have actually read my comment, I said that I thought it was interesting that a device like the G-Slate--with minimal software customizations--can't update their software when others like Motorola and Asus have already put out 3.2 updates. Yeah, I know Motorola is the launch partner for Honeycomb, so their prompt update to 3.2 is a given. Asus, however, managed to update their tablet within weeks of the updates to 3.1 and 3.2 and their tablet has the added complication of requiring the software to work with a dock.

LG doesn't have those issues, and yet, that can't update their device in a timely fashion. And as Mr. B-Tech has noted, LG's on board with the 18 months of updates.

Hrm..., not sure what is going on in LG land...

Seems like no one really knows..., all the Docomo user in Japan are getting their update though. :(

Also, we have gotten together with a project page with guides and how-tos:

    and irc: irc.freenode.net #g-slate

We'll be rooting 3.1 as soon as we get the files.

  • kevin

people actually bought this thing lol.

    • http://www.christiantechsaz.com Aaron

Yeah, it's actually an awesome tab. :)

Here is the link to the GOTA:

We are trying to figure out how to flash it though, since LG does recovery, really, really, really badly. :(

  • http://code.google.com/p/lg-v909 Aaron

Um, serious thing here. The new bootloader is confirmed LOCKED. If you want root, better hold off for now. We are working on it. :(

  • http://code.google.com/p/lg-v909 Aaron

Ok, we have root now on 3.1. Now we are working on cracking the lousy bootloader....

  • http://code.google.com/p/lg-v909 Aaron

Ok so the bootloader isn't locked. We are good to go. Some users weren't using root for nvflash or didn't have their udev rules setup correctly. We are rocking with 3.1 and root now. :)

  • http://code.google.com/p/lg-v909 Aaron

Ok, manual update instructions are now up, with option to root. :)
