It seems Best Buy just can't keep its stuff in the stockroom. Contrary to the earlier July 10th tip, we've gotten multiple confirmations that Best Buy stores have already started selling the Toshiba Thrive tablet - you can walk into your local store and pick one up right now.

We've personally confirmed that several stores have the Thrive (16 and 32GB versions only, unfortunately) in stock, but you should call ahead to your local store - just in case. Have the following SKUs handy when you call:

  • 2768901 - 32GB version
  • 2769576 - 16GB version

That means you'll be forking over $480 (at least) if you want a Thrive today. We're not sure when you can expect the 8GB in stores, if at all, as multiple Best Buy representatives have told us that the 8GB Thrive had been deleted from store inventories and is only available online.

The Thrive, which features full-sized USB and HDMI ports, sports the following specs:

  • 10.1" display (1200x800)
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz dual-core processor
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM
  • Android Honeycomb
  • 5.0 MP rear camera with autofocus
  • 2.0 MP front-facing webcam
  • Stereo speakers
  • High-speed USB 2.0, mini-USB, and HDMI ports
  • SD card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC)
  • Bluetooth 3.0+HS and Wi-Fi b/g/n connectivity
  • Gyroscope, Accelerometer, e-Compass, GPS and Ambient Light
  • Screen rotation lock switch
  • User replaceable battery
  • Interchangeable rubber backplate, available in a variety of colors
  • 1.6 lb weight
  • 0.6" thickness
  • Swype

So who's grabbing one of these bad boys?

why would someone want a 8gb? because its cheaper?

    • Kevin

I might get an 8gb device because it is user expandable with the SD slot.

It really depends, to me, on the actual price difference between devices.

I have a 16GB Galaxy Tab 10.1 and because there are so few apps available for it AND I use my 16GB iPhone 4 for Games & Music, 16GB is more than enough space., even 8GB would have been enough.

Tried; Its true the BestBuy stores have them in stock, but they will not sell them to you until July 10th. They claim they would get sued if sold earlier than official release date (July 10th). Confirmed this with 2 different store reps at 2 different locations. Bummer :-(

  • Sy

Picked up one on military base. Guess uncle Sam isn't afraid of being sued.

CONFIRMED! I just went to Bestbuy in Silverdale, WA and picked up a 16gb version a week or better ahead of schedule. The Tacoma, WA store would not sell them yet, but Silverdale did get one out of the cage for me when I flashed the plastic.

Minute i got home I cancelled my preorder from Amazon. Final bestbuy total: $521. Amazon pre-order would have been $538 and about ten more days to wait for shipping to arrive.

If you are in LA and want one now, head to Westwood. I just went to the Best Buy near Wilshire/UCLA, where I saw an otherwise empty counter with price tags for the 16 and 32GB models. They each read, "ALSO AVAILABLE - NOT ON DISPLAY," with the above-named prices. I thought about buying one, but I want to wait for a few reviews. They also have the leather-looking case and a pile of silver backs on a shelf underneath. (As I had hoped, the back has some grip to it--it shouldn't slide off your lap as easily as the you-know-what).

PS: It was called the Portfolio Case. They also have the charger dock, and Invisible Shield screen protectors.
