We've known that Samsung planned on pushing its Touchwiz UX custom interface to the Galaxy Tab 10.1 for some time now, and it appears that that time is almost upon us. According to Sammy's official Tab 10.1 page, we can expect to see this update "soon," along with a few other goodies thrown into the mix.

Touchwiz UX looks to bring some incredibly useful features to Honeycomb, like a notification area power widget and an awesome mini-app tray. Phone Arena got a hold of a pre-production model Galaxy Tab 8.9 last month, complete with Touchwiz UX, and shot a video highlighting the new features. Have a look:

As you can see - it actually looks pretty useful. As long as the stock Honeycomb Gmail, email, and calendar applications aren't replaced by Sammy's versions, then I can actually see myself not only using Touchwiz UX, but also enjoying it.

This update will also bring a few other new features to the already awesome Tab 10.1, like a tablet enhanced version of Swype, mobile printing, a device tracking service called FindMyMobile, functional Samsung Hubs, and a few new bundled applications, including Amazon Cloud Player, Amazon Kindle, and - oddly enough - Words With Friends.

As always, we'll make sure to let you know when this update is available.

Lets see how much you are " enjoying it" when it doesn't get update because of this UX.

I want it ported to the Xoom!

Im new to Android (coming from iOS) and I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Ive heard nothing but bad things about touchwiz but I dont even know what it is as my 10.1 is my first Android device.

So please tell me., what is mini app try, what is it used for AND why wont I be able to get updates if I update my 10.1 to touchwiz?

To see Touchwiz in action, I suggest that you watch the video. It will give you a better idea of what it's all about (including the mini-app tray).

As far as updates are concerned, more often than not, manufacturer UI overlays are the main cause of delay in OS updates. Samsung has been notorious for not updating its devices in the past, but have since made an attempt to change its ways.

I wouldn't necessarily say that you "won't" receive any further updates because of Touchwiz, as that is something that only time will be able to tell.

Touchwiz is a manufacturer's overlay on top of Honeycomb. On phones, it's mainly to distinguish Samsung from other Android phones, but it looks like it might provide added functionality to the tablet.

Hey guys visit my hands on vid of this galaxy tab http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QHK7-FlAI0

Can users opt OUT of TouchWiz? I want this tablet but not if this silly UI overlay is forced on me.

    • Kevin Jackson

My feelings, exactly. I'm going between this and the Toshiba Thrive, but do not want TouchWiz; I have it on my Galaxy S 4G and it is the one thing that I wish that I could permanently remove.

why? whats' so horribly wrong with TW?
