DeskSMS

As a Canadian, I can't use Google Voice in order to send my SMS. However, there are numerous apps that act very similarly, including the new DeskSMS from the developer who brought you ClockworkMod.

DeskSMS transfers SMS to both your e-mail and other IM applications through the use of your Google Account. This allows you to answer SMS on-the-go and with the use of a full keyboard. As someone with big fingers, I can't tell you how annoying it is to try to do a large amount of typing with an on-screen keyboard. This definitely helps.

Welcome to a new feature here on the site, where we'll be giving five awesome games that've been released in the past month the spotlight we feel they deserve. Below are our picks from July - enjoy!

Asteroid Tower Defense

There seems to be no shortage of tower defense games on Android, but most seem to have common problems: either they don't take advantage of the graphics that Android is capable of, or the gameplay isn't snappy enough to avoid frustration.

Asteroid Tower Defense thankfully avoids both issues. The game's controls allow you to make precise, quick movements without adding ...

The Logitech Revue, originally highly overpriced at $299.99, was recently reported to be going down in price heavily to a sweet spot of $99.99 that it should have shipped with in the first place in my opinion.

As of today, the price drop is in effect, so you can order the Revue for $99.99 with free 2-day shipping directly from Logitech by following this link.

Update: It's now up for the same price on Amazon and at Best Buy.

On a separate note, I've heard some rumblings lately of rumors that the original Google TV hardware won't ...

There are plenty of network-attached storage ("NAS") solutions available, however if you are a fan of Western Digital, you may be the owner of their My Book Live line of devices (available much cheaper on Amazon). Although reviews indicate that it is a solid product, it lacks a convenient method of remotely accessing the data, especially considering its MioNet solution is "nearly useless." Owners of this NAS will be pleased to hear that WD has launched the WD 2go Android app that helps bridge the remote access gap by providing an alternative method of viewing the content on your ...

Just a few days ago Sony Ericsson confirmed an early off-contract August launch for the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc. And now, on the eve of August, the official Sony Ericsson Online store launched a page allowing customers to pre-order the Android 2.3 device for $599.99 with an expected shipping date of 2 August. It is also possible to obtain an 18-month extended warranty for an additional $99.99.

Alternatively, for a better deal head over to Newegg.com to pick up this phone at a much lower cost. The Midnight Blue version is $474.99, while the Misty Silver version is slightly higher ...

Capital One Services has finally joined the ranks of large financial institutions offering native Android mobile banking apps with the introduction of the official app.

Capital One account holders can now check their balances, pay bills, transfer funds between accounts, view recent transactions and rewards, and, of course, find the nearest branches and ATMs.

The app works on Android phones running Donut (1.6) and up, but cannot yet be installed on Honeycomb tablets (support for them is coming later). Grab it for free by using the links below:

The Amazon Appstore has received very mixed reviews since its launch March 22nd of this year, most recently taking the heat from the Apparatus developer, but one thing is for sure - the free app deals it offers daily have become very popular among the folks here in the U.S. I for one religiously check the Appstore every night, hoping to pick up the next best app. Speaking of which...

The Amazon Appstore has now given out more than 100 free apps - some incredibly useful and some outright awful. I'm curious to see today which app deserves the ...

The Android web Market only just received its last update that introduced app install histories 5 days ago, but the Android team is at it again today with a new, much smoother way to navigate app screenshots.

Rather than display blocks of 3 screenshots navigable via little hard-to-click dots on the bottom like it used to do, the new navigation offers a pleasant, smooth UI scrollable sideways. It's easier if I just show you (or you can click through to any app with more than 3 screenshots, such as IMDB here):

A small update, but pleasant nonetheless.

Last month we had the chance to play around with LauncherPro developer Fredrico Carnales' latest app, UberMusic. I, personally, had a great amount of fun with it, as it evokes a certain "Zune" feel while remaining largely functional.

The app's left its open beta phase and is now available on the Android market for a price of $3.49; for a music player that pulls in album art and artist data, I'd say that isn't too bad of a price.

It also looks like there's been some UI changes to the Artist and Album sorting, as well. Albums show ...

In their latest addition to their "games we've shamelessly ripped off from other companies" line of titles, developer Gameloft has released "GT Racing: Motor Academy Free+" to the marketplace. At its core, it is a bastardized version of Gran Turismo that has been stuffed with micropayments to specifically eliminate the charm of Gran Turismo.

I'm not going to even try and sugarcoat the fact that you're playing a completely ripped off concept: much like most of Gameloft's  other titles, there is nothing new or original here.

Here's a shocker: in order to conserve precious bandwidth, AT&T plans to start throttling data for the top 5% of users that were grandfathered in on unlimited data plans back in the day. An AT&T spokesperson danced around the subject quite delicately, making sure to note that most users won't be affected by the change:

One new measure is a step that may reduce the data throughput speed experienced by a very small minority of smartphone customers who are on unlimited plans – those whose extraordinary level of data usage puts them in the top 5 percent of our heaviest

Earlier this week we found out about a supposed Galaxy S II variant rocking a slide-out QWERTY that was said to be on its way to AT&T. Needless to say, most people were not happy about the addition of a keyboard -- and with good reason. Why ruin one of the thinnest smartphones on the planet by adding a physical keyboard?

Guess what? They didn't.

As it turns out, that wasn't a Galaxy S II variant at all, but a completely different handset that is headed to Ma Bell. BGR, the site credited with the initial leak, is ...

A few days ago we told you about Dolphin Browser's foray into the tablet world, Dolphin for Pad. We've had a bit of time to play with it since then, as have most of you, and we recently received a tip from a loyal reader named Nathan Patton that highlights a rather nifty feature of the new browser. When in fullscreen mode, a simple two-finger swipe activates an awesome 3D cube of all open web pages, very reminiscent of the Compiz Fusion 3D cube on Linux that was highly popular among the uber-geeks of yesteryear.

With a little help ...
