Last Updated: June 5th, 2012

Update: As promised, this update is rolling out now. Here is the official changelog, per Sprint's forums.

  • Corrects voicemail notification issue (from 4.22.651.2)
  • Corrects issue with hearing aid compatibility menu disappearing (from 4.22.651.2)
  • Netflix compatibility (from 4.22.651.2)

You heard it here first, folks - the EVO 4G is receiving an update in just 5 short days to address two of the major problems that users have experienced after the jump to Gingerbread. Specifically, non-working Netflix (boooo), and odd Visual Voicemail notification behavior. The turnaround time in getting this update out is pretty impressive, considering the Gingerbread OTA landed just a little over 2 weeks ago. You can see the brief summary graphic of the update (version 4.24.651.1), below:

Thanks, Captain Anonymous!

  • Bonafide

I just wish I could get Shoot Me to work again.

    • David Ruddock

You need root access for ShootMe in Gingerbread. The fact that it worked in Froyo necessarily means some kind of exploit or workaround was being used.

      • Chris

To be honest David we shouldnt have to root to do something so simple as taking a screenshot.

        • David Ruddock

So you'd be comfortable with the possibility of an app being able to harvest screenshots of your phone and send them back to a remote location? Your texts, call logs, sensitive financial information?

And don't give me the permissions excuse - 90% of people won't read them.

There is a *very* good reason why screen capture requires root permissions.

      • Chris

hmmm Can't reply to your newest comment.

You seem uneducated on the whole "Screenshots" deal. Look how Apple does its screenshots. Home Buttom + Sleep/wake. Thats hardly "harvesting taking screenshots"

I don't mind much on my location as the government already can track us. Texts also are a no since I have nothing to hide. Same with call logs. Besides its not any more diferent then another app doing it.

As for sensitive information. I do all that over my password protected home wifi network. Anyone stupid enough to to banking over an unsecure network is just asking for their information to be stolen.

If you use that logic then we should look at the cameras. An app could Secretary record you. An app could track your GPS location even though it does not say in the logs.

and yes the permissions are a huge thing. Even though Google is all "open" they do remove apps if they are found to be malware. Look at the recent news.

        • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Apple does it a bit differently - they designate one app that can take screenshots, while Google doesn't designate any, unless root is used. I think it should be solved by a dedicated permission, no matter what David says, or at least a default app that is allowed to take screenshots and ships with the OS.

That's the way a Network that calls itself "the Now Network" should always operate!! Good job on this one Sprint.

  • !?!?

I'm not sure why we had these bugs in the first place. Didn't someone at HTC/Sprint notice that the voicemail notification on their phone never went away?

  • june

Happy to hear bout another update to bad nothing I can use.... I'm on stock EVO with gingerbread update don't use netflick so no issue there. Phone works fine except for tha reboot issue with sense any word on that fix

  • Scooter

Damn. This means, in order for Netflix to work after this update, I'll have to wait for a fix from Flipz over at Fresh, and the guy just rolled out only four days ago. Ah well, the trials and tribulations of being a custom ROM user.

  • T

To solve the voicemail problem you go into applications, voicemail, clear data. Problem solved. It's not a bug and I had this happen once prior to Froyo.

    • Chris

Well a lot of people say otherwise

      • SJ

Agreed. I have done this every three days for the last week. This update is needed.

  • Brandon

Hope they're planning to fix whatever is making sense constantly reload after the update too! Why that isn't a top priority is beyond me.

    • http://www.AndroidPolice.com Artem Russakovskii

Happens all the time in Gingerbread even with CyanogenMod and ADW or LP. I can't find a solution that works.

  • kentpavelka

A number of us also have issues with our Contacts after Gingerbread update. Specifically, names within "Groups" created in contacts no longer appear alphabetically. Doesn't sound like a big deal but it is a pain to have to search via scroll for the right name. I see nothing online indicating this is on HTC's radar. Anybody?

  • Brad

I would like my Sense to stop crashing after using stock browser since the update.

    Also, gps turning itself on..

  • Chris

How about giving us some new sense. At least 2.1

  • Tom

Please let them fix the LED notifications. Id really like led charger light to go off when a message comes in like it used to.

  • Fumbler

Be nice if they fixed the compass too and restored the not quite wireless N support along with the other things mentioned.

Oh and hey, how one of those unlocked bootloaders this time around? I don't think they've found root yet after this update?

  • wilbur

Would be nice if they fixed voice comands. Factory reset of phone didn't fix. Still fails while moving in car.

  • Luis

I just hope that HTC and Sprint learn from this and just give us the latest update that works. I was hoping since it took so long to get this update that they would of had all the bugs fixed. HTC Sense and HTC Sense.com access would be nice too since it is a HTC Phone. Sprint please make sure that you give us all Gingerbread has to offer like on other Android Phones with no problems. We all paid good money for this phone and the service. Take care of the billions of Android Users that just want what we all deserve. Thanks

  • shawn

Will this add wireless n back on the EVO?

  • shawn

    Will this unlock the bootloader

  • shawn

    Will this unlock the bootloader?

  • Richard Yarrelll

Oh well I am glad to get netflix back as soon as possible. Unfortunately I can only hope it reach my Evo 3d soon after June 24th that will be a great treat. I will be blaring netflix on my Evo 4g till the VERY END...

  • shawn

  • june

I see EVO shift has sense 2.1 and nicer lay out .... We got had..... Boo Sprint

  • sherlock

    And there was much rejoicing!

  • steve

the Cpmpass needs to be fixed...spoke with Sprint, HTC, and they claim no fix in sight...crazy...

  • http://jamesgeeo.com James

I wonder if I will be able to root my phone after this update. I didn't root before it, and after it, the rooting programs can't see my phone.

Apparently, with the gingerbread update, HTC locked the bootloader. :./

I didn't realize all the benefits of rooting until they locked it out for me.

  • TheClyde

Anyone have luck with this so far? I have tried manually and haven't found the update yet.

  • shawn

    It's not out yet

  • gemini

  • qs

I'm from western new York and I haven't gotten the update yet. Still waiting. If my netflixstill.doesn't work ill be upset.

  • patrick

    Nothing in Vegas yet.
Don't they check updates to make sure they work anyway, had I known 2.3 was gonna kill Netflix, I would have kept Froyo.

  • Guy

I got mine this morning at 8am (Orlando FL). netflix works but it keeps telling me there is an update, which it can't find. I hit cancel and the video worked fine.

  • june

Got update in upstate ny..... They could have kept it...... A sense update would be nice

  • patrick

Got it in Vegas at 6am, did not fix Netflix. Evo.

    • Melissa

I had problem at first. Try this, open your browser and login to Netflix there. (without logging out of your browser version of Netflix) hit home and then restart Netflix app. That is what worked for me. It will then most likely have an annoying window that asks if you want to update to a newer version. If you say yes you will get an error message. Just hit cancel which will allow you use the app, and for me it is streaming just like it used to. Hope that helps you!

  • Drewskeetz

Did my update today and though Netflix is not yet available on the Android market you can use google and type netflix.apk -hit enter and you will see a link going to XDA forums with a DL link. use that as i just installed it and im streaming "Pulp Fiction" as i type this on my Evo using Netflix. Back up and working

    • gemini

Which one cause there are several to choose from. Can you assist me

      • gemini

I figure it out thanks , the netflix work in the XDA forums but I had to download on my 2nd browser (Skyfire)The movies streams with no problem

    • patrick

      Thanks a million, it worked.

  • Ashish Raj

OTA Updated (North NJ) and found a new widget "Traffic"... Was it always there? Seems like a shortcut to Map with a pre-loaded destination.
Anybody here has any further clue on this?

  • http://facebook.com/lamarw LW

I finally got the update this morning after a power cycle. Can download it but not install it successfully, due to being rooted.

Oh well, will wait for the XDA peeps to get on it, and eventually Cyanogenmod 7 based on the official Gingerbread release.

  • Hamm

Update showed up after a power cycle.
Netflix keeps asks for an Update that it can't find; I hit Cancel and I can play videos just fine.

    • Melissa

I have the same issue. I think that Netflix had tried to update the app before pulling it from the market. That's why it keeps asking for to update, but can't find it when you try. It's annoying, but better than no Netflix. =) Hopefully they will that soon. Anyone know when the app will be back up on the market? My hubby is getting the EVO this week from bestbuy (FREE!!!) and will want it.

  • Melissa

Anyone else lose their camera sounds from the update? No zoom or capture sounds...

  • patrick

Thanks Drew, I got it on my Evo again and it works fine.
I did the netflix.apk search, got the download, took a minute and I got it to work fine.
It keeps asking for an update, but I am afraid of doing it in case I lose it.

  • patrick

Get what else this update screwed up? My slingplayer on 3G/4G, it works on Wi-Fi, and yes, I checked the 3G speed all night long and it was fast.

  • Luis

Does anyone know if the HTC EVO 4G will ever get a new sense update.

  • patrick

Disregard my slingbox issue, it was a sofware update needed from slingbox.
They had issues with the last update and it happened at the same time I updated 2.3 to get Netflix back, which is back in the market btw.

  • Clyde

Still problems linking accounts to contacts.... :(

  • gemini

this has gotten out of hand ,now I can't play any videos, no streaming, and youtube doesn't play WTF!!!! Netflix doesn't work at all. I pay out a lot with sprint and this is what I get in return.

  • Veronica

PLEASE fix the ability to take screenshots without root access AND the call duration disappearance !

  • gemini

why my text mesg.... repeat twice from the person who is texn me. and do anyone out there assist me with my video playing from youtube and streaming this is annoying

  • Luis

Has anyone heard about getting the new sense anytime soon for HTC EVO.
